Interesting, I know there’s been that keychain extension for Chrome for Windows for a while now, but it’d be cool to have this option on other MacOS browsers.
That’s right, and IIRC iCloud for windows also has support for keychain passwords in Edge too.

Somehow seems backwards that Sonoma’s new features are playing catch-up with a years-old iCloud extension for Windows

This is another temptation for upgrading my main MacBook Pro to the beta. I had been holding off, but I may upgrade it and use my MacBook Air for any production stuff that needs to be done.

But now who is going to use Safari? Can't believe Tim let this get through.

Everyone will move to Chrome and Apple will stop developing Safari. It is this sort of lock-in that kept people on Safari. When everyone leaves they will just kill it off and we will all be forced to use something else.

Imagine if they start letting 3rd party browsers properly on iOS or iPadOS. It's going to be an absolute mess.

This is why Apple can absolutely NEVER let iMessage outside of the Apple ecosystem. I'm getting all sweaty just thinking about it.

It’d be pretty damning if this was the only thing keeping people on Safari.

From the extension description:

"iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension for Windows users that allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your iPhone, iPad or Mac when visiting websites in Chrome on your Windows PC."

Until they stop securing the passwords with the iphone PIN code, not even something I'd consider.
Using a simple PIN code to secure one's iPhone is foolish. None of us would use a four digit PIN for our Macs. Same should be true for our iPhones.

nope sorry, passwords will still remain in my head. nice try tim apple
I agree that password don't belong in any cloud.
I would suggest to use a password manager that stores data encrypted on your devices. I am using Safe+ which syncs using WiFi.

Not sure where you got that text from but the actual description of the new extension says this:

"iCloud Passwords is a Chrome extension that allows you to use the same strong Safari passwords you create on your iPhone, iPad or Mac when signing in to websites in Chrome. iCloud Passwords also saves any new passwords you create in Chrome to your iCloud Keychain so that it is also available on your Apple devices."

I'm guessing you're looking at the old extension for Windows users which required the iCloud app to be installed on Windows.

also chiming in to note that i look forward to Firefox implementation soon... and the merging of passwords between all of these managers, too!

Will iCloud for Windows ever support passwords on Firefox though? That's the real thing I'm waiting for.

The macOS Sonoma update that is in testing allows Mac owners who opt to use Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or another browser to use Apple's Password Manager for filling passwords.

Developers and public beta testers running macOS Sonoma can use their iCloud Keychain passwords with non-Safari browsers at this time, autofilling passwords and one-time codes. Third-party browsers can also save new passwords.

Apple has made an iCloud Passwords Chrome extension available for macOS Sonoma users, and it can be downloaded and installed to access Apple passwords on the Chrome browser or any Chromium-based browser. Apple has also provided an extension for Microsoft Edge users.

Google and other browser developers are also working on implementing support for Passkeys, the password alternative that Apple introduced last year.

Strange… I recollect being able to use macOS keychain with Camino (a Firefox-based browser with a Cocoa interface) way back… when did Apple stop supporting the keychain with 3rd party apps?

Here, I’ve found it: https://caminobrowser.org/documenta...rds in the,by other applications, like Safari.

Now if only iCloud Keychain wouldn't prompt me to enter my password TWICE every time I want to see it. This has been a longstanding bug for at least a couple years now.
