Screensavers? In 2023? Surely people have their monitor switching off via power management to save energy?
Yes, in 2023 I still enjoy visualizers and screensavers when I'm around my laptop which moves around the house with me. If Im not using my computer I just close the lid.

Even if you're updating I recommend it. So many excellent features that Apple's implementation doesn't have. I love being able to shuffle just the aerials I select rather than them all. Lots of refinement needed for apple's version, and until then, I'm sticking with Aerials.
Haven't taken the plunge into Sonoma yet. This is good to know.

Every light in my home is LED now. I have my phone set to charge at non-peak hours. I even set my dishwasher on its timer to run very early morning when electrical demand is low. Let me have this one thing. It's pretty to look at and I think we're talking on the order of a few watts here.

I really don't get all the dislike being shown. Don't like them? Don't use them! They're not mandatory.

For years I have carried an Android device and a large part of that has been the widgets I can setup. I set them as per my needs and they speed up my workflows imesurably. It just takes a bit of thought and willingness to try something new.

I am pleased to see iOS starting to include them, though it still has some way to go. It was a shame when they were removed from Windows, I used them there too. Like you, I am very happy to see them here now. Feels a lot like people simply being scared, almost upset, of change.
I think that's the general problem with a lot of comments here(and at every other forum I read) — "this feature is stupid because I don't need it — instead they should've focused on (choose from list of desired features that were not implemented).

I agree — they do need work and I'm sure they will be improving them, but I'm just happy they are here — like you said — no one is forced to use them. :)

Yeah, this is way better than the Spaces version. They grayed out versions in the background... it's nice. Interested to see what other widgets will come.
I also have a bunch on my main display, which made me realize that I need to clean up my desktop))) There are third party ones too — as long as you have them on your phone. Some will need work, for instance my BMW widget doesn't seem to be doing anything other than telling me to open the app on my phone — which it is)))

Anyone know what game that is from the keynote? It appears at around the 3 min mark in the embedded video. Thanks!

I have no real need for it, but I spent some time training the Personal Voice thing last night so I could play around with it today. I'm genuinely impressed at how accurately it's able to reproduce my voice. I mean, it's not going to get hired to narrate audiobooks, but it definitely sounds like me. A lifeless me, but me nevertheless.

I used to be someone, long ago, who would update day 1 with any updates or new OS released by Apple, but I don’t dare do it anymore. Sadly, as of recent times, there’s ALWAYS some problem that arises and
They just can’t ever seem to get it right. I’ll be passing on this one for now. Apple has dropped the ball on their golden status of reliable updates and new releases of operating systems.
Weird. I have 4-5 Macs in the house that I always update on Day 1 (or day 2 if I get a bit lazy). Never had an issue.

Not sure if it's related, but I typically set up my Macs as "new" and use iCloud, I don't do Time Machine restores.

I will likely update at some point, but not for any of these features.
1. I don't use screensavers
2. I don't like desktop widgets (don't use on iPad or iPhone)
3. Don't do screen sharing
4. Tried doing third party web apps in dock and did not like the clutter effect on dock, so ditched it
5. Safari profiles might be useful, although I currently accomplish the equivilant of this through the use of different browsers.
Same on almost every point. I do use widgets on my iPhone but that's it.

Regarding the Safari profiles, I haven't seen anything to confirm this will be possible. But does anyone know if there's a way to link a Safari profile to a Focus profile? e.g.: If my MacBook and iPhone both switch to Work focus at a certain time of day, it would be nice if Safari would also auto switch to a work profile.

Anyone know how to change the blinking cursor back to black from blue? The blue blinking line is annoying

I wish there was a way to shuffle through the screensavers. They're mesmerising on a long call when the laptop switches to screensaver automatically 😁

So many beautiful cities in the world, and they choose to feature the horrendous urban planning and human rights disaster that is Dubai? You can do better to inspire us, Apple.

I think it's interesting that many of the places chosen for screensavers/wallpapers are markets Apple is expanding into. In addition to Dubai, there's several China landscapes/scenes, and Hong Kong Harbor...

There's also a weird obsession with Iceland, with no fewer than SEVEN of the screensavers being from that area. I genuinely suspect that a senior exec behind macOS went there on vacation and was much impressed.

Craig Federighi: “We spent months, and our best engineers worked day/night to bring this incredible update to macOS Sonoma; screensavers and widgets. No OS other than MS Vista has done anything this exciting.”.

macOS Soboring could be the weakest upgrade of all time.

The only useful feature here is the Web Apps. Since our "app" experience has flattened into online apps over the years, Cmd-Tab and the Dock have gotten less useful, and Tab-Hell has taken over. Web Apps could fix that, if they did it right.

There's no way to get rid of the new icon that show when your screen is being recorded or video is being recorded. The icon is identical to the screen sharing one. They're redundant. All three functions could go under one icon, and that icon could go under Control Center. It's annoying how they add more un-removable menu bar icons as the computer's design with the notch has made less room for them—plus the whole point of Control Center was be able to stuff icons away, but these won't budge.

And for some reason since the update Google Chrome is now going across the notch (window and help are to the right of it) whereas before it all fit to the left. I don't know what changed.

The aerial screen saver it loaded with was nice but it made the menu bar completely white which is jarring for dark mode. I'll have to play around with the others.
Yep. The menu bar being white is a big no for me. That was the first thing I noticed and couldn’t unnotice.

My jaundiced response:

Aerial Screensavers: These look amazing but are weirdly biased towards the US, China/Hong Kong, and Iceland/Greenland (? did somebody go on vacation there or something?). Evidently, mainland Europe doesn't exist in Apple's geography.

Interactive Desktop Widgets: Honestly, if this was 2000 this would be awesome (Dashboard, anybody?). But I just don't drop down to the bare desktop nowadays. I always have windows open, typically full screen, on both my home and work Macs. My Mac wakes from sleep with the windows open. If reboot, it reopens the same windows from the last session. There's no point at which the Mac shows me the desktop unless I choose to view it.

Videoconferencing: Again, awesome, but most people use Zoom (home) or Teams (work). The idea of using FaceTime for any business work would be laughed out of my office's boardroom. It's kinda sad that Apple's building such a great tool that most people won't use (until maybe the headset gains traction, I guess...). It feels very similar to things like Freeform and the office apps like Pages. Great apps, great features, continual innovation. But hardly anybody uses them because it immediately makes them incompatible with the rest of the world.
Apple needs to change name for FaceTime. It doesn’t sound professional.

Widgets were better when they had their own Space (as part of Dashboard). I don't understand why I'd want a bunch of attention-grabbing widgets on my desktop. Am I misunderstanding how this works?
Agree 100%. I put four on my desktop. Within two hours they were all four were in the dustbin. They are quite intrusive and visually annoying. Maybe I will change my mind, but I doubt it.

Sonoma OS... As a practical change, I can see one positive sign - OS memory operation became more efficient. From a usability standpoint, what exactly are we looking at? Is the rehashed Widgets feature is indeed Apple's stab at keeping itself at the Technological Progress table? Is making interaction between Apple ecosystem objects always will be so difficult? For instance, no [easy] way to manage your iPad Books between devices. And how about application management on your iPhone? All this folder app grouping? One still has to do it through the clamzy fat-finger small phone screen trick?
Here is a guess. Those multiple Apple teams, they do whatever they are doing during the development cycle, separated by walls, egos, agendas, and their own pressures. And on a D-day, some VP claps his hands, and everybody brings whatever they come up with to some huge table and in a hurry, they try to fit everything together. There are some sparks of brilliant ideas, but coherency and completeness are evaporating.
