I was surprised when I did a fresh install of Tahoe on my MacBook Air, none of my Cloud files that I dragged to the desktop on my other devices showed up.

I had to go into Settings -> ICLOUD and manually turn on a half dozen prompts to enable iCloud syncing of files

That kind of stuff is usually turned on by default when you update/install an OS, but I suppose this is a beta bug or I am mistaken about it needing to be automatically enabled.

This is as it should be. I've gotten really weary (and wary) of Apple turning on iCloud services after major upgrades.

Not having to scramble around hurriedly turning off services I don't want enabled - especially on an early beta - was a welcome change.

However, ,File Vault is on by default. Would be nice if all your settings were stored in iCloud to make reinstalls easier.

The first of my installed apps adapted the new design in a pre-release, except the glass effect. I don't really like those huge sliders.

A few items, good and bad:

  • Cannot reboot remotely and then reconnect via screen sharing, login credentials must be entered with keyboard while using connected monitor (may look to resolve with automatic login, but would rather not). Worked on Sequoia. May be connected to FileVault status, which I can't remember if I ever enabled or not
  • The older version of iStat Menus has a memory leak that didn't exist in Sequoia; it's pretty bad (note, I wholeheartedly disagree with the sentiment in the wiki that memory leaks always exist in all OSs). Haven't tried the new version yet as I don't like the changes they've made
  • Photos has more support for HDR. It's not everywhere and I can't tell if I can edit in or to HDR yet like Lightroom, nor am I sure which formats are getting support
  • Also in Photos, there's also a lot more photoanalysis and mediaanalysis including audio components (music and speech), not quite sure what's going on here but guessing what people say and music in videos is being extracted
  • Photos capabilities for external libraries seems to be on par with what one would expect with internal libraries, which is good - this was very rough for Sequoia overall. Hopefully Apple had backed off the artificial limitation of only getting all capabilities on internally stored collections. My library is well over 1TB. Yes, the message "This library isn't searchable in Spotlight due to its location" message but I can search via spotlight just fine.
  • Can't find a way to show bluetooth device (keyboard, trackpad) battery level on the menu bar, or anywhere actually. I do see 0% for both devices when in each respective control panel, but that's clearly inaccurate.
  • While almost all of my settings (iCloud and local machine) were respected, I found Focus being shared amongst devices, which I had turned off on all of my devices
  • Lots of UI issues, but expected at this point in the game

Is anyone having trouble with their browsers after the update. I have had to do two hard starts to get things in order but still a slower performance than before. I have run malware and virus scan and nothing shows up. I could not connect to the music or news or other web based programs. I have sent in the troubleshooting to Apple.

Safari, Edge, Firefox - Every site I frequent loads well, except Facebook (Safari), so no big loss.

It’s hard to corroborate your experience without any details. Are you on wifi? What kind of Mac do you have? What speed is your ISP? What websites caused you problems? etc.

That said, Edge seems fine, no real change from Sequoia.

Safari, however, is a performance car crash. Laggy, jerky scrolling (sometimes; it’s intermittent, even on the same site), not always responsive to clicks/taps, etc. I’ve had a couple of instances where demanding sites (looking at you, Reddit) just don’t load on the first time; hitting the reload button makes it work.

And that’s before we get to whatever is going on in the UI department.

I too can’t find a way to put the battery level on the menu bar, but I do see battery levels for devices in the menu bar menu, for both Apple (e.g. AirPods, Magic Trackpad) and non-Apple (e.g. Sennheiser headphones and Keychron keyboard) Bluetooth devices.

weird, every - about - 24h, my Icons on the MacBook Pro M1 fall back from transparent to tinted blue. Nothing severe, but odd. And LoginServer crashes with "re-spring" at heavy load (programming the SSH connected Raspberry Pi) ...

Last night, the massive memory bloat happened to me again, but this time I caught it before it brought my Mac down. First, Brave bloated to over 10 GB in size quickly and continued to grow. Quit. By watching Activity Monitor, the bloat seemed to move to Superhuman, quit. Then Safari.. almost as if it was jumping app to app fast

After dealing with those three, it seemed to stop. Then I logged off and back on, and everything returned to normal

Strange, I haven't seen other people post about what seems to be a massive memory leak problem

Has anyone gotten the B2 update to show up if it doesn't via Software Update?

If I make a new B2 installer, will that simply update my existing install? I have it on an external SSD, and would like to keep my B1 install and update if possible.

I had a huge shutdown error on B1 last week, that put me in a restart loop, took about 15 mins and needing a full shutdown to resolve. It also seems quite sluggish on my M1 Studio. Perhaps this is because it's an external SSD?

Thanks!

Hi guys,
Indeed, Safari's performance is terrible. I've cleared the cache, and even so, many websites still take a long time to load. I did a comparison with Firefox, and in that case, the websites open instantly.

At times, the device heats up for no apparent reason. Other than that—aside from a few bugs, unexpected crashes, and screen lags—it's usable. I hope these issues get ironed out in the next beta.

I'm experiencing Mail and Notes columns gradually becoming wider. Reset it and over time it keeps creeping so it's wider. Sometimes the column listing emails or notes titles/subjects is wider than the content of the note/message.

safari is flying here, better than ever. but i've has some glitches in photos, notes; nothing terrible. my macbook heats up too, but that's not unusual in early betas. looking forward to that moment when every single mac user is completely happy, and every single thing just works 🤔🤣

Prayer circle for all of us waiting another week for the Safari black tab issue to be fixed 🕯️
I don't think it's a bug. In dark mode it's very hard to tell what tab is your current tab, that black line helps you know that those are the inactive tabs. I think that black line is there on purpose. Because it's on all the tabs that aren't the tab in view. And again it's hard to tell, there has been multiple times I have closed the wrong tab in Beta 1, but now I just look for the tabs that doesn't have the black line to know that's the tab Im viewing now...

It better be a bug because it's absolutely horrendous UI!

It’s been acknowledged by Apple that it’s a bug

In my case, unfortunately, that’s not how it is. Sometimes it doesn’t even load basic websites like 192.168.1.1 from my router running OpenWRT, and I have to refresh the page to get it to show anything. Compared to Firefox, it’s noticeably slower, and I’ve seen others online saying the same thing. I guess it’s just a temporary bug… or at least I hope so 😅

sure, and there are also others here not seeing a slowdown. 🤔

are you running any extensions? if you're on a macbook, can you try at another location? and is private relay on or off...
