This will go down the drain, but i can't help myself;

Do you guys need HDD metadata? Perhaps have cluster arrays exceeding 5 Petabytes?
Because if not?

EXFAT.

And you know what? If or when, 'cause you really never do know what the future shall bring, you need to? You'll already be 100% Windows and "Linux" compatible; no work required.
I mean even now, some of you must be occasionally doing your SMART monitoring/checkups right? Meaning already, you do need Windows/Linux. Shamefully, but.. there you go 🙂

It's a good opportunity. I know "Apple says", but there's what they "tell you" and then there's real life usage.
(bringing us to one of many pet peeves i had with the Great Leader's[tm] vision[tm], it being that thou shalt not use external drives, nor art thou to expect support for them, ever, Amen; to this day adhered to; and did i say shamefully. Or perhaps shamelessly's more like it)

If i'm missing something, honestly let me know? Like, usage cases where EXFAT is just prohibitive for you?
* perhaps merely a character trait rather than a product of reason, but i never understood people willingly locking themselves to something; whatever it is, long as it entails chains, why ever would they go and do it.

macOS 26.4 has started to mount attached USB drives that had been unmounted.
On my two desktops, I usually have a large USB drive attached, formatted with AFPS and with CCC volumes corresponding to those on the desktop. I have. number of external Thunderbolt drives on both systems.
Carbon Copy Cloner (CCC) is set to run an incremental backup schedule every night, mounting the needed volumes and unmounting them afterwards. This prevents unnecessary Spotlight activity and desktop clutter.
26.4 ill remount these drives frequently and at random. Is anybody else seeing this?
I have field FB.
I've been seeing this with all my external volumes. I'll go and eject the ones I don't need, only to have them remount at some random time later (within hours, but sometimes right away). It doesn't matter whether or not the drive is connected directly or through my CalDigit TB dock. Some drives are USB-4, others USB-3 (I can't remember if I've used a TB drive after installing the beta.)
