macOS Tahoe 26 on Unsupported Macs Discussion

Now things are getting really crazy. Apps like Terminal, TextEdit, Activity Monitor, iMessage,
System Settings, FaceTime, etc., aren't working anymore (see image).
The error message says I haven't installed macOS Tahoe 26.2, even though
I just did a clean install with beta 1 of 26.2 Build 25C5031i.

What's causing this? Does anyone know anything about it?
Not sure I understand. Just to be clear, you have a Mac that is not natively supported by macOS Tahoe (requires OCLP Tahoe post-install patches which are not yet available) and you are wondering why apps don't work in Tahoe?

I'm not sure why apps that once worked in the previous Betas (without OCLP post-install patches) are no longer working in the build 25C5031i (still without OCLP post-install patches). It is an unpatched Beta. Try updating to macOS 26.2 (25C5037j) to see if that helps. If it doesn't, I'm not sure there are many conclusions to be drawn until OCLP 3.0.0 is released.

It's also inexplicable to me why all these apps suddenly don't work in this Beta 1 of 26.2.

I'm currently installing Beta 2 (which was just released), let's see what happens then.

T26.2B2. OTW/OTA. OCLP continues to play its important roll.

I am noticing that things seem to be running better after the last couple of updates.

Edit: Easy update.

All these Apple applications are on /System/Applications. Apple has perhaps added a new security layer in 26.2 for this location. That could be a new challenge for OCLP team, and release of OCLP 3.0.0 could be postponed.

@sinbad21 Wow. That is quite a lofty speculation. Where did you find the information to make that conjecture? I haven't been testing Tahoe on my old 2010 laptop, because I was waiting for OCLP patches. I just tested the apps reported by Oxygen-X1 and am not observing any of those problems.

@deeveedee What I understand of initial message of @Oxygen-X1 is that only Apple applications are dysfunctional with macOS 26.2, while the other ones can be launched. On the other hand these applications are not located in /Applications folder, but in /System/Applications. So I speculate that the specific path of these applications has something to do with the problem. This is only an assumption.

Firefox works well, all Apple Apps are flakey, and last night twice when I tried the new APPS that replaced launchpad, both times the mouse stopped working and the system reverted to the login page. That never happened before. It is possible that after it sits for a while that could change.

The new APPS has not worked well for me on my unpatched laptop since the launchpad was replaced in Tahoe. I'm still not drawing any conclusions until OCLP post-install patches are available, since I have no problem with APPS on my hacks that do not need OCLP.

Understood. In engineering parlance, we call that a WAG.

Easy upgrade from 26.2 Beta 1 -> Beta 2. Still patiently waiting for OCLP post-install patches, but I did test a few Apple Apps just to see if they opened. FaceTime opens (and camera works), Terminal opens and is fully functional, Activity Monitor opens and works... Better than I would expect without post-install patches.

Hi everyone. I installed Sequoia on a late 2015 27-inch iMac using oclp 2.4.1. The latest official version for my iMac is Monterey. I read online that, once oclp 3.0 is released it won't allow my iMac to install Tahoe because it's too old. Is it true? Sorry if you've already answered a question like this.

That's not true. In fact, once OCLP 3.0.0 gets released it will allow your iMac to install Tahoe and apply post-install root patches to make the system run properly. But it's not released now, and the nightly doesn't support root patches for macOS Tahoe either, so just stick to Sequoia.

I have the same 17.1 Imac, and for months I have been experimenting, as have many others, on a seperate, deletable, test volume, one can get a good idea about what T26 will be like and somethings, especially Firefox, work very well, most native apps are slow and glitchy, it is a slow learning experience that is not for every day use and requires waiting and patience. as far as I can tell the experimenting has not affected my everyday use Seq volume. When 3.0.0 is finally released I will happily begin on that volume.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I'll definitely be sticking with macOS Sequoia until OCLP 3.0 is released. My fear was that even once OCLP 3 is released, it wouldn't support my 2015 iMac, which is perfectly fine for my needs and does its job more than well.
2015 iMac’s use Intel Broadwell, Progress has been shown publicly on Broadwell by the developers.

It will support it just fine when the time comes.
