macOS Tahoe + WindowServer / memory pressure over long uptimes — anyone else seeing this?

Well now that head UI guy is out of the picture and they put a real veteran at the top of UI design, maybe they'll focus on optimizing Liquid @ss and the overall system.

Honestly, guys? I'd only do something about it if the following applies: the fan starts up more frequently, and the CPU usage inexplicably spikes. Anything else is completely irrelevant to me. If I think, or have the impression, that the system is running slowly, I'll just restart it. If the problem persists despite a slow system, even with current or relatively recent hardware, I'd contact Apple Support or submit their feedback.
 
Anyone who can't manage with 128 GB of RAM because they're only using 46% of it either has way too much money or is completely clueless.

You can do math and percentages, right?

The only bug I noticed in Tahoe is that macOS did removed my printer from Settings. Weird. Well, it doesn't really matter. The printer can be added again with a few tips or clicks.

How should I put this? Instead of arguing endlessly here, I suggest a constructive approach: Please direct your criticism to Apple! Be it through Apple Support or via the feedback form. Because I believe nothing else will help, and ultimately, you want your issue to be resolved, right?
 
The greatest memory pressure I saw on my M4 machine. Up to 5 GB RAM compressed while being all green used by two logged in users.

7 pages of technical and some arguments, finally caught up and pretty happy there’s some others that share the same issue.

Machine: M4 max 64gb 2tb (primarily used for after effects, prem pro etc)

I have the exact same issue as OP described in the first post.

I wrestled a bit with etre but it only really said my issue was electron apps. But that can’t be the issue here. Window server does take up 3-10gb of ram. But at 64gb it’s a barely a dent. It also takes up 100-130pc cpu. Again barely a dent.

What I’m seeing is very low fps and laggy display. I can barely move a window without it appearing like it’s something from the 90s.

A restart a day does keep this issue away. But I’ve noticed plugging in and out hdmis it doesn’t like at all. Generally that aggregates the issue and I’m more likely to run “glitch free” for less time if I’m using an external monitor.

But alas. A restart fixes it.

I’ve been keeping tabs on the beta 24.4 beta 3 rn. But there’s nothing in the notes about display, lag, window server etc. not sure if there would be. But hey.

Over to the rant. Bloody annoyed with this machine rn. Problem is 2tb of data to offload whilst I format and bring the machine back to sequoia, plus installation of apps it’s easily a 3-4 hour endeavour.

But I’m not sure if 24.4 will fix this. What’s the consensus here?

Oh lol.

I downgraded yesterday. 5-6 hours door to door. Not the end of the world, but was able to do that while cleaning up the flat.

The machine is buttery smooth now - there’s a few things I miss like the 2FA codes in chrome and a few other UI changes.

But when I say it’s buttery smooth my god. And the disappointing / most upsetting thing is, on paper up until yesterday I had one of the fastest machines Apple produced and it was still lagging. It’s a joke that those on m3 pro or even m2 pro were just suffering so badly. But you drop it down to seq and it rips through.

Honestly, I don't see the point in downgrading. I currently have version 26.3.1 installed and everything is running perfectly. One screenshot shows that up to ~6 GB of RAM was compressed, but there was no paging whatsoever. Why should I worry about it?

I was never fussed about the swap or ram usage. But my windows were extremely slow and laggy. To the point where it felt like pro motion wasn’t working and I was stuck with some old school 2003 30fps monitor. I force quit finder and it snaps back to pro motion.

But…. I had to do that every 20-30 mins or so. Until I restarted and it worked fine again for about a day.

The other day I was exporting a video with adobe media encoder and it stated estimated time was 3hours. Didn’t feel right. Restarted and it dropped to 10 mins.

It could be adobe it could be my monitor and the hdmi cable I’m using. Could be a myriad of things. But I know this started with Tahoe 24.3. Im not sure how to downgrade to .2. So seq was the answer.

It got to the point where I opened my Mac and just felt a sense of dread “is this gunna work today”.

If it’s working fine for you and just minor UI artefacts then keep doing what you’re doing. But mine was actively not performing.

On my server (a basic 16GB Mac mini), I haven't noticed excessive memory usage (using Plex, Security Spy, and an FTP server 24/7) after two weeks of uptime.

On the other hand, in 26.3.1, I still notice some issues with preview (they all seem to be related to text fields, others find them in Notes, and in other applications). Maybe related

Now for a completely different question. Are people complaining here simply because the RAM is actually being used properly, or because there's a real problem? Because it doesn't sound like the latter to me.
