The upcoming macOS 13.5 update resolves a syncing issue with the third-generation and fourth-generation iPod shuffle, according to Apple's developer release notes. The update is currently in beta testing and will likely be released later this month.

From the release notes:
Resolved Issues

Fixed an issue where iPod shuffle (3rd and 4th generation) cannot be synced due to an unknown error (-244).

Apple discontinued the iPod shuffle in 2017, so this is a niche bug fix, but it evokes nostalgia for the miniature music player. The original iPod shuffle launched in 2005 and was the first model without a screen, allowing for a more portable design and a lower $99 starting price with 512MB of storage. A 1GB model was available for $149.

"iPod shuffle is smaller and lighter than a pack of gum and costs less than $100," said Apple's former CEO Steve Jobs. "With most flash-memory music players users must use tiny displays and complicated controls to find their music; with iPod shuffle you just relax and it serves up new combinations of your music every time you listen."

Beyond new color options in 2012 and 2015, Apple last updated the iPod shuffle in 2010 with a square design and 2GB of storage.

macOS 13.5 will likely be one of the final updates to macOS Ventura, as Apple prepares to release macOS Sonoma later this year.

Wonder if this was a private employee proposal.

Seems strange to return to fix an old problem. (Or action to prevent brand damage or a suit for not fixing broken things.)

That or some Apple chieftain still loves him some shuffle action.

The thing I love about macOS the most is the fact built right into the OS is support for all iPods including the original FireWire ones, despite the fact the tech has been long obsolete. The iPod's legacy lives on all these years later

I just wish we could've gotten a new iPod Classic. DAPs have grown in popularity, so a new iPod Classic that had support for AirPods and music streaming services would've been killer. But hey if Apple wants to concede the DAP market to Android, that's their choice.

macOS still natively supports iPods all the way back to the original 2001 iPod with firewire. Methinks maybe there's some iPod enthusiasts on the software team still :)

The iPod was important after all. Right off the heels of Apple almost dying in the 90s with the G3 iMac saving them from bankruptcy, it was the iPod that made Apple an absolute juggernaut. If it wasn't for the iPod we wouldn't have the iPhone.

Why would anyone still own one of these? They were horrible to start with no screen

The Shuffles were good. They were cheap, small, and could hold an entire playlist. Useful for just plugging into a car stereo or a outside speaker, especially the USB stick iPod Shuffles

It was the gumstick Shuffle that was horrible since it didn't have any buttons whatsoever.
