There we go! Just in the nick of time, my first blood donation!

I won't find out my blood type for a few weeks, but I will update when I know!

EDIT: The most painful bit? Pulling off that sticker after I took this photo!

Thanks and congratulations, AtomicEdge. Your donation makes a nice finish to the MacRumors Blood Drive.

Even though this blood drive is ending, the need for blood and platelet donations continues. We encourage everyone who is eligible to make donating a habit, and those who aren't eligible to support and encourage donations by others. You never know who it will help, but there's a good chance that at some point someone you know will benefit from the generosity of others.

Please save and share bookmarks to our
Thanks everyone!

Well done everyone and thanks to all those who gave up an hour of their time to help a great cause.

not so fast Q.

myself and a the rest of the crew from my fire station donated blood yesterday. we actually do this twice a year.

one of our own is in need of a match for bone marrow. we are hoping for karma here.
You're on the west coast like me, so it's still May. :)

I sure hope the marrow drive turns up a match for your coworker with CML. And tell the San Diego Union-Tribune that there's a mistake in the article. It sends people to this invalid URL and it should be this valid URL instead.

God help me, I think I'm developing a forearm fetish.

Well done all.

I know a few people who are actually being kept alive by blood/platelet donations.

Thank you to everyone who donated during the month of May!

As previously mentioned, donating really does help. Hopefully the MacRumors' Blood Drive successfully raises awareness of this issue and maybe even encouraged a few people to donate for the first time.

Shaun.

A HUGE Thank You...

I just want to thank everyone who gives blood. My Mom needed about 6 pints in the last 15 weeks of her life. I learned how important blood is in those last 15 weeks of my Mom's life. I miss her so much. So to EVERYONE who gives the time and blood. a BIG THANK YOU!

Want to give yourself...literally?

Hey, you! Yes, you gorgeous being. Are you:
Over 16?

Good, you passed. More serious questions here regarding all other aspects of your health.

But, do you want to save lives? Yes, actually save (or at least) prolong someone else’s life?

I’m talking about donating blood (but there’s also other options), and I think it’s time we did something about it. Here’s some hard, statistical facts:
Only 1 in 30 Australians donate.
The blood you donate is < 10% of the total volume of blood in your body
The whole session lasts an hour, with the actual blood donating taking 10 minutes. Most of it is interview bits and resting afterwards.
27,000 donations are needed every week in Australia.
For one donation, you’re not saving one, but THREE lives. How amazing is that??
Currently, blood groups O and A are needed. I’m O+, so I’ll definitely be donating.

But not everyone will go and do something about it once reading this. These are common excuses I’ve heard of and have used:
I’m dead scared of needles and pain
Yes, it can be nerve-racking the first time you donate. I did it with my school, so most of us were virgin blood donors (sounds cult-ish). I believe that if you really want to do good, you will find ways to do so. Push that boundary, face your fears. Living in fear is wasting your amazing life. Take the first step, and be brave!
I don’t have the time, I’ve got other plans
Fair enough. But if you click here, you’ll find that it only takes a moment to fill in your details and find your closest donating centre. Less than 5 minutes, promise.
I want to but no one wants to do it with me
Are you sure about that? Ask your family if they’re keen! Have anyone in your sports team, or club? Ask someone on your FB? Network, network, network! Grab your sibling, or just get someone to sit in with you and watch what happens. They might change their mind. I would probably go with you if you lived in or around Melbourne, though it might be a tad awkward since we both know and not-quite-know one another. Tumblr does that.
It’s not safe
Are you kidding me? The Australian Red Cross has one of the safest blood supplies in the whole world. New, sterile needles are used each time. They test you for more than just your blood type- “HIV/AIDs, hep B, hep C, Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus (HTLV) and syphilis”. Pretty sure it’s safe.
I need to book an appointment
Mostly true! You can book up to three day’s in advance. Some centres allow for you to just come in and do it, but you’d have to check it out.

The last time I donated was in year 11. I wanted to in year 12, but whenever the blood bank came to school, it happened to be around SAC or exam time. I’m making a public commitment to donate every 3 months, because I can spare an hour of my day. Could you do the same? Will you step up to the challenge?

It very very hard to take, but you must stay strong !
