What is Apple's gain in making the iPads thinner - it is tougher engineering and more expensive? And, they "lost" the audio jack to this effort. Revisiting my opinion on this(Edit - not revising). What is wrong with a 0.7mm's worth of air space inside the casing? The camera could be flush, like in the iPhone - it is not a pro photography device, definitely to wieldy enough to use as one, unlike the iPhones..

Meanwhile, the entry level Mac mini has ALL the ports! Attach external storage and add memory as needed, it is a perfect base home computer and server. Not a single Apple exclusive port on this! This alone will recruit so many millions into the Mac commune.

I like the MacBook Air for losing some weight, not the ports. Or becoming thinner - no point.

I've personally found the iPhones after 5S to hold with ease in my hand without a case - too slippery. Now, they are thinner for no real reason - all products from iPhone to MacBook Pro!
Apple giveth and Apple taketh away.
The MacMini doesn't have the SD card slot.

The 12.9” iPad Pro was a no-brainer for me; I preordered immediately. I currently use the first gen, and the spec bump is enough to make it worth it. I’m personally happy about USB-C because I’m imagining the music production accessories it’ll unlock - compatible with both the iPad and my iMac on a single connector.

yep. just what everyone is calling for...thicker and heavier LOL

I will never understand why they make it thinner and have this camera protruding?

Make it thicker so it is one flat surface, fill it up with the battery and enjoy!

Oh, it doesn’t need to be when you have a case?

If you use it with the case, then it is thicker again! What nonsense... Instead of carrying stupid volume (in form of a case) around, I would prefer to carry smart volume (like battery or processor power) around...

Oh, you not want it to be scratched? Then place it in a safe and never use it!
[doublepost=1540937844][/doublepost]

And it will be a great design for a new elite 4 inch phone!

Yes, I am guilty of skimming over the missing SD port. Apologies.

Where should a bunch of dongles exist? On your desktop or in your "bag" that is designed to carry a sleek laptop? That is why I want my laptop to be an easy to carry, no worries about missing dongles, all-in-one laptop.

The SD dongle is bulky, and the majority of them on the market are of dubious quality; I'd rather have one of these on my table than on my laptop bag.

I'd go for a thicker ipad if they added a kickstand, they could use the non kickstand area for more battery and also make that camera flush. 7-8mm is just fine for thickness, making it thinner doesn't make it any easier to travel with or handle it, so at this point it's just bragging rights. Also more ports would be nice, really a 2nd usb-c port so I can charge this at the same time as I use the other output.

The iPad has now reached peak industrial design IMO. Pure edge to edge screen, no chins/lips, uniform edge. Great fast screen, wireless magnetic charging of the pen. Unobtrusive biometric scans, plus it can drive monitors, and charge devices. Where do you go from here other than spec bumps?

If they can put Face ID on an iPad, why not on a Mac? Seems backwards that the new MacBook Air still has the Touch ID sensor.

the only thing that bothers me about the iPad is the camera bump. was that really necessary? I mean, who even takes photos with an iPad?

Lots of people. Maybe not for artistic purposes, but for documenting things. I use it to add pictures of samples to my lab notes. My wife just used it to add pictures of items she was giving away on freecycle. Anytime you are making a document this is a quick way to add a photo.

I'm unaware what the amp requirements are for the Mini, but it would be convenient if there was a built-in connector to allow stacked Minis to share a single power cord.

Remove the new camera bump?

The spec sheet says "Max. 150 Watts continuous power". I would assume that means with a 6 core CPU, 64 GB RAM, and 2 TB SSD at least. So, P= I/E so, if P = 150W and E = 120V, the I (current) = approx. 1.25A. So, your average 15A wall outlet can support a "build farm" of about 12 Mac minis, all fully-loaded and at maximum load. In reality, you'd probably be able to sneak that number up to at least 15.

I think that a six-plug "octopus" cable would be sufficient for most casual hobbyists ;-)

Am I the only one who thinks this isn’t reaaaaaly edge to edge?
So, where would you HOLD a TRULY edge-to-edge iPad? Balance it on your outstretched fingers?
[doublepost=1541006491][/doublepost]
Sure wish the air had a quadcore. Now I may as well get a refurb TB MBP for a hair more.
The word on the street is that that the new CPU will actually be significantly faster than the one in the previous MBA, and with the addition of TWO TB3 Ports, the I/O expandability is head-and-shoulders above the previous model Air, too!

Then there's the Screen, the fact that you can have double the RAM, and a BUNCH more SSD (up to 1.5 TB).

I think the new MBA is getting a bad rap; but I also think that it could use a BTO quad-core; just to stop the whiners. But considering that Apple is essentially using a semi-custom CPU, I kind of understand why the options are limited...

Hard edges? like the iPad 1 ?? WTF? Are you effing kidding? That's just plain horrible!! Happy with my nice rounded edges that don't cut into the creases of my fingers on my earlier iPad Pro. How quickly they forget.

Some beautiful photos MR. Keep it up.
[doublepost=1540936087][/doublepost]
I've got a feeling that real edge-to-edge would mean that you'd always lose screen real estate due to covering it with your fingers when holding it.
And more importantly, phantom touches...
[doublepost=1541006885][/doublepost]
A person who describes this as "nearly edge-to-edge display" should buy glasses. The bezels are still quite significant
I wouldn't call about 1/4" "quite significant".

You don't WANT "edge-to-edge" for something that is HANDHELD some of the time!
[doublepost=1541007143][/doublepost]
I'm wondering how much of an upgrade the 6-core Mac Mini with 64gb RAM would be against my late 2013 quad iMac with 32gb.
Huge amount in the I/O department!

Huge amount in the Graphics department (I think)!

Really significant amount in the CPU department.

This really IS a BIG update!!!

Yeah, I know *I* want a 4 pound iPad... NOT!

"Fill it up with battery". Right.

Wondering if the v1 pencil can be used on new iPad...not a deal breaker as I like the new pencil features. Just a thought...without a lightning port to pair it....

Typical for Tim Cook era lack of consequence:
- iPhone XR, XS and XS Max with oval design and no USB C port
- iPad Pro: return to famous edge design from iPhone 4/4S/5S and USB C port

One big mess!!! New iPhones should have USB C port also especially that EU force one power adapter cable standard.
Different products have different development cycles. This can cause inconsistencies, especially when doing something significant, like sunsetting an established interface like Lightning.

I wanna know where the "nearby location" is.

:p
It's the Williamsburgh Bank Building around the corner. Though I guess it's called 1 Hanson Place now. The building in Brooklyn with the big clock tower. Beautiful interior. Been in a bunch of movies and tv shows.

Competes nicely with the Surface Pro in price point and features.
But it blows the Surface Pro away in performance...

What's going on in these 2 pictures of the Mac Minis that are stacked here? From the back you can see they only have power and ethernet connected. Are you able to use Multiple Mac Minis Connected through ethernet? If so, how does one utilize that setup?

Some Applications, like XCode, Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro X, and maybe others, can do "Distributed (Grid) Computing" to shorten Build/Render times, etc. All that requires is an Ethernet connection. In fact, if you have more than one Mac on a Network, you SHOULD be able to do this yourself.

Drat. Looks pretty nice, and I was really looking forward to getting one of these for Christmas. But two dongles for one iPad, plus another for my phone? Forget it. iPad Pro works well enough, and won't be useless on a trip because I didn't bring a collection of little cables with me.
So, just how many peripherals can you hook up to your current iPad?

You don't have to get "a collection of little cables". Just get a single multiport USB-C Dock and be happy. $30-$99-ish, depending on the ports and capabilities.

Here's one for the princely sum of $34 with 3 USB 3.0 Ports, SD/MicroSD Reader, 4k HDMI Port and an USB-C Charging port.

https://www.amazon.com/Through-Ports,Aplomb-Splitter-Adapter-compatible/dp/B07DFF888T/

Here's one for $39 that has one less USB port (2), but adds a Gigabit Ethernet Port and a 3.5mm Audio Jack (I/O I believe).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GSVBJVW/ref=psdc_281413_t1_B07GN4YCQ8/

etc. etc. et CETERA!!!

Is there a problem?

A LOT more flexibility than a Lightning Port or A Camera Connection Kit (which you ALSO have to carry around with your Lightning iPad!).

Now, does iOS have DRIVERS for all those Ports? I'd say the USB, Card, Audio and HDMI are a given. As far as the Ethernet Port???

I'll answer this myself as I missed this in my quick skim/low coffee read through earlier (and I hate it when something is explained in the main article somebody didn't bother to read)

MacRumors:

Given all of the changes introduced in the Apple Pencil 2, it only works with the new 11 and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models and it is not compatible with older iPad Pros or the sixth-generation iPad.

Likewise, the current Apple Pencil will not work with the new iPad Pro models and is limited to older iPad Pro models and the sixth-generation iPad.

That answers it!

In one of the articles, it states that Face ID on the iPad works when it is sitting on a desk.

Is Face ID constantly scanning the area even when the screen is off, or is it only triggered when you wake the device, such as by pressing the power button?

The MacMini doesn't have the SD card slot.
I KNEW someone would post this!!!

FFS, it has MORE PORTS THAN ANY OTHER MAC!!!

Give it a REST, willya?!?

My mid-2012 MBP has an SD slot, and I have used it exactly ONCE; to see if it worked.

I would bet that that is the case for almost everyone. Not everyone. But, in Product Design, you have to stop SOMEWHERE.

Here. TEN WHOLE DOLLARS! And you don't even have to grope around blindly looking for the SD slot on the BACK of the mini, like before!

Here's a USB-C one for $15 that will Read/Write 3 Cards SIMULTANEOUSLY, and supports more formats than just SD! Do THAT with a built-in Slot!

And it even comes in GREY... ;-)

That would just make things worse! I don't have much need to hook up a bunch of stuff to the iPad, that's what I use my desktop for. Editing on the little screen just isn't too practical.

I'm already sick of having having to remember the headphone to Lightning dongle for my iPhone X, and not being able to charge while using my good headphones. Now I'd need a USB-C to headphone jack dongle, plus a lightning to USB-C adapter, or remember another cable. Three dongles or extra cables whenever I travel... Just not worth the hassle.

Maybe if Photoshop for iPad turns out to be useful I'll reconsider someday, but at this point I'm sick of Apple's smartier-than-thou approach to its customers. There's no law saying you can only have one port, they could have had USB-C and kept the Lightning and headphone jack.
