It's not only the "new" users who can be accused of jumping in with the insults and stirring the pot . there are plenty of long-time, long-winded members, who are more than capable of doing that, in fact, they're better at it, because they've been doing it for longer.

Indeed; some long time users can be rather trying, this is true.

Actually, on a related matter, another issue I have noticed is that of some who have become quite expert in the fine art of tendering borderline insult and who specialise in petty trolling, some of whom have an exceedingly finely calibrated nose for where the line is in deliberately giving offence.

In truth, it can present quite a bit of a challenge to call them out on it.

Anyone posting in PRSI simply needs to grow a thicker skin. The amount of personal bashing there can be overwhelming if you don't.

It is not a "safe space," at all.

I don't think PRSI are what folks are referring to it's mainly the front page and the blog's.

The argument being made is not the need for a "safe space" - itself a term that has acquired further meanings in recent times - but what might be termed a space where a basic degree of courtesy when posting is expected and extended, and where insult - and crude name calling - on the basis of race, ethnicity, gender, - does not replace discussion and debate.

Sorry to jack your post, but I would never have guessed English is not your first language. Heck I was born and raised speaking English and you write better than I do.

Thanks for your compliment @Weaselboy, really appreciated. Perhaps the three years I've lived with my whole family in South Africa and being a teenager (10 - 13y), may be the root cause of it all! :)

Cheers!

I haven't been around much for the past couple of years (or longer), but has this place really gotten as bad as it was 5 or so years ago, which had a lot to do with me getting less interested in bothering to login? Or is this just in PRSI, which I never visit anyway?

I agree with the OP, but I would go further to say that the editors are encouraging it. Macrumors itself has taken to participating in the tech media narrative about Apple, which incites most of the commentary here.
This is an accurate and important observation. News thread titles and content tend to take a negative spin which then encourages negative posters to pile on. I can certainly understand this from a business point of view: controversy = clicks = $$$. Additionally, even moderators stoke the fire with anti-Apple comments and the moderation in general seems to spend more time on procedural issues such as multi-posting or removing even a sharply relevant picture or cartoon as low content, rather than effective troll management. In my 9 years here, I definitely agree with the OP - the forum climate has substantially degenerated. I am very disappointed with the direction of the forums and the site.
