And the ISP would freeze arns account when the mac os x tips that get emailed out are reported as spam, which would end up happening.bobx2001 said:or how about free weekly mac os x tips emailed to all MR members. that would make me want to sign up if i was not a member.

So those free tips would end up taking everything down.
arn basically cannot do any mass e-mailing, even if he specifically got everybody's permission -- some of it will still get trapped by the automated spamcops, resulting in fighting with the ISP every time a mass mailing goes out.
Maybe, maybe not. The thing would be to see if people actually are seriously looking for something, in which case they will sign up, or if really they are just passing through, and can't actually be bothered to take the time to sign up.bobx2001 said:i still think such a thing would lead to loads of idle accounts.

MRoogle is just something I put together today. It some ways it's better, in some ways it's not. It's better because it's powered by Google, which is infinitely better than vBulletins search abilities, but, it is not up to date. MRoogle will only be able to search what it knows is there from the googlebots last crawl of MR. This is fairly up to date, but not 100%.bobx2001 said:MRgoogle looks nice. but it is not as good advance as the VB search.
maybe you should replace the search on the top right with MRgoogle.
My great-great-great grandfather had the same problem.arn said:There was an apache problem earlier today.
edesignuk said:Exactly. Still full access to browse the forums, just disable the search. I've seen quite a few other sites do it. Arguably searches put the heaviest load on forum software & their servers. Stop all the passers by from searching *could* help significantly, whilst at the same time allowing them full access to browse everything.
Think about it, for them to post a question they'd have to register, and if they're registered then they can....Earendil said:Umm... it sounds good on paper... but are you REALLY suggesting we discourage the newbies from searching the forums, and instead just posting a question?![]()
Did you just skip over everything that has been said!?Lacero said:Sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. What are you trying to accomplish? Reduce eyeballs to MR or increase membership by forcing registration? I mean if the main goal is to get people to visit MR, then the way it is set up now is perfect. If your goal was just to increase membership, you'll neglect a large portion of the silent, but active users of MR.

If the servers are down then nobodies eyeballs get to see MR.Lacero said:Sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. What are you trying to accomplish? bobx2001 said:honesly i dont visit this site much, but in the past 3 weeks i have seen the forums of this site go down twice.
i think the admins should consider buying some more server power it is clear that what they have at the moment is not good enough.
MacNut said:Ok it's 1:30 am on the east coast and the site is moving at a snails pace. I thought Sunday nights were supposed to be quite.

A person needs to register to view images posted on MR.
