or how about free weekly mac os x tips emailed to all MR members. that would make me want to sign up if i was not a member.
And the ISP would freeze arns account when the mac os x tips that get emailed out are reported as spam, which would end up happening.

So those free tips would end up taking everything down.

arn basically cannot do any mass e-mailing, even if he specifically got everybody's permission -- some of it will still get trapped by the automated spamcops, resulting in fighting with the ISP every time a mass mailing goes out.

good point, maybe MR should trail the idea of blocking out the search fuction to non-members for a bit a see what difference it makes.

i still think such a thing would lead to loads of idle accounts.

Maybe, maybe not. The thing would be to see if people actually are seriously looking for something, in which case they will sign up, or if really they are just passing through, and can't actually be bothered to take the time to sign up.

Also, idle accounts don't take up server resources anything like thousands of pointless searches do ;)

Course, they can still use MRoogle :D

MRgoogle looks nice. but it is not as good advance as the VB search.

maybe you should replace the search on the top right with MRgoogle.

MRoogle is just something I put together today. It some ways it's better, in some ways it's not. It's better because it's powered by Google, which is infinitely better than vBulletins search abilities, but, it is not up to date. MRoogle will only be able to search what it knows is there from the googlebots last crawl of MR. This is fairly up to date, but not 100%.

MRoogle won't be able to find this thread yet for example, the built-in vBulletin search will.

Rebuilding Apache NOW. May cause downtime.

Bring back the Contributors program and I'll pony up like I said a few times before.

Just do NOT commercialize MR like SpyMac did... just look at www.spymac.com for where this could lead! I wouldn't give any money if you guys start to commercialize features. I'll just go and find another Mac discussion forum, which while sad, is what you deserve if you go commercial.

apache update done. things are smooth at the moment...

we'll see on Tuesday when new hardware comes out what happens to the servers... ;)

Exactly. Still full access to browse the forums, just disable the search. I've seen quite a few other sites do it. Arguably searches put the heaviest load on forum software & their servers. Stop all the passers by from searching *could* help significantly, whilst at the same time allowing them full access to browse everything.

Umm... it sounds good on paper... but are you REALLY suggesting we discourage the newbies from searching the forums, and instead just posting a question?

Come on, think of something better

Think about it, for them to post a question they'd have to register, and if they're registered then they can....;)

Sorry, that makes absolutely no sense. What are you trying to accomplish? Reduce eyeballs to MR or increase membership by forcing registration? I mean if the main goal is to get people to visit MR, then the way it is set up now is perfect. If your goal was just to increase membership, you'll neglect a large portion of the silent, but active users of MR.

Did you just skip over everything that has been said!? My "goal" was to reduce server load, a lot of which I would imagine to be brought on by lurkers searching.

It's just an idea anyway, an idea that will probably never happen. Calm down.

Well mark me stupid. I didn't know you had to be a member to post ;)

*cough*

This just being recreational, when the servers are running a bit slow or go down for awhile, it is not the end of the world for me.

I just figured it was the upgrade or something. :shrugs: No biggie.

If the servers are down then nobodies eyeballs get to see MR.

edit they are down again.

Google is also a catch-22 -- it's nice for your site to show up in Google searches, but those Googlebots take their toll on bandwidth.

I have an idea...

A person needs to register to view images posted on MR.

edesign, MRoogle is cool! lol

honesly i dont visit this site much, but in the past 3 weeks i have seen the forums of this site go down twice.

i think the admins should consider buying some more server power it is clear that what they have at the moment is not good enough.

you buying them???

Ok it's 1:30 am on the east coast and the site is moving at a snails pace. I thought Sunday nights were supposed to be quite.

eh,

It comes and it goes.. I know it isn't my connection because I am sitting on an OC12 :)

Slow or fast, the site is great, and this is only the 2nd time I have seen the site slow down.

Maby.........

Yes good job edesign ;) ............there needs to be some sort of a restriction for non-members, since they use a lot of bandwith....and the contribution is not a bad idea to get up again even if only a handful of people contribute ;)
