Ok, so after a 'nice' warm up walk of just over 6K - half of which on solid ice :eek: - I stopped, stretched a bit and set up a 2K (~1.24 miles) run with the intention of actually running the whole distance... at least you cannot blame me for not trying...

I didn't quite make it, after only about 600m I had to walk for about 100m and then I alternated between running and walking the rest of the workout... still clocked in a best time of 4:35 on 1K (according to the nano), and 8:06 on the mile (which the nano and Nike+ agrees on)... probably the fastest I've ever moved (longer than 100m) ever by my own power, with out riding a bike or skiing...

I think the effort would have made our favourite absent runner iGary proud, not because I in any way aspire as a marathoner, but because after only about 100 meter I - quite literally - threw up in my mouth a little™... without even slowing down... :)

Quite funny run profile, though (as you can see: when the nano announced I had 400m left, and I knew I'd actually ran the mile I almost passed out, but managed to pull myself together and finish in style):

Good start Mitty.
I went through the same thing when I started a few months ago. I remember that running for 3 minutes straight seemed like an eternity. Yesterday I did 30 minutes straight for the first time. It's all about baby steps, and being consistent.

The final results are in and the image is updated on the first post of this thread.

Congrats to everyone who participated and to twood who managed over 180 miles in January! :D

Thanks for reminding me!! I need to upload my last couple of runs this afternoon when i get home :p

Just held on to it then by about 2km!

I'm well pleased with a finish inside the top 10.... just got to go for the same in Feb!

EDIT: That's interesting...... according to the front page I'm 11th but when I look on the Nike+ site I am 10th.... could that be the upload I did this morning for last nights run at 8pm UK time?

Ziwi's keen.... first one to post a mile 9'16"

Might have a bash at this after I do my 5km tonight.

So after an easy paced 5km last night I thought I'd have a go at a 1 miler, set off at a mad pace got to about 0.6 mile felt like I was going to be sick..... but my legs were fine so I pushed on slightly slower...... got the last 300m call from the Nano and stepped it up. Finished ok and got Paula telling me I had a new fastest 1 mile..... previous was 8'09" but I'd never tried a single mile like this..... finished with 6'54"..... and currently (with plenty of people still to register a run) I'm top. I think this could be an interesting comp.

I had a thought last night that we could do with a challenge that's a bit of a leveler in term of hardcore runners and those starting out/just trying to get fit and I wondered if calories would do that? It's based on weight isn't it so would that work? Sometime I run with a guy that's about 30lb heavier than me and his claories burnt on the same run is quite a bit higher.... what do we think.... might be interesting? Most Calories in Feb?

6.54 took me a while to get to but i think your right - this could be a good competition this month :)

congrats on your 1st place BTW :cool:

says the one who runs the mile in competition - so what times do you run the mile in when you try? ;)

I'll be unsickying this thread and starting a new one for February - here, take all discussion there

well, in high school you run the 1600 m, which isn't really a full mile.
in college indoor, you run a full mile, 1609 m
in college outdoor, you run 1500 m

for me, the shorter the better. here are my bests so far:

1600 = 4:36
1609 = 4:39 indoors = about 4:38 for 1600
1500 = 4:15 = about 4:32 for 1600
800 = 1:59.15 = about 4:08 for 1500

so my best event is the 800 m

HOLLY SHI* :eek: You could run half way , stop off at a Mc D's shove some transfat's down your neck run the rest and still beat my ol time for 1 mile

lol, but remember, all those times are in a race. and not with an ipod. it makes a big difference

wow very impressive - can't wait to see what you clock in for the 1 mile.

me , well i'm off to the Pub for some preperation for fridays 5k - no doubt i'll get so merry i'll try and run it later on tonight with a kebab in one hand and my beer glass in the other ;)

thanks. i don't think my time will be all that great though, since it will just be my first mile of a longer run......but we'll see i guess

lol, have fun running like that :p just don't forget to run again on friday ;)

do a run with the nano but without any headphones for a mile and i'm guessing it'll be something better than running with the headphones, even if it's not quite as quick as without the ipod entirely. i run with my nano in my pocket and while i run about 1/3 as quickly as you, it really doesn't cause me a problem.

yeah, sometimes i run with just the ipod in my hand with no headphones. but i don't think my coach likes me running with it though.

you put it in your pocket? like in your shorts/pants? doesn't it move up and down?

I don't use headphones, just have it in my Nike+ shorts in the Nano sized pocket, and then the receiver on my shoe.. nothing to hold, no wires. :) When its working that is...

but it seems like it would flop around.....does it? and it would be hard to know how far you've went and stuff

any tips on running with my dog? he loves to run, he's a border collie (herding dog)... if he stops to try smell something he usually comes to my call. I have to run with him on a lead, or he will just GO, he's only 6 months old.

I've tried running him on a short lead, which generally works but if he switches sides, which he does, I almost trip on him... should I run with an adjustable long lead (like the retracting cord ones?)

tips appreciated!

i probably can't give good advice here. i've tried to run with my dog, but he's so hyper all the time.....he's a strong dog, and tried to fight every other dog that comes around.

it depends on how strong the dog is. i can't use the retracting ones for my dog cuz he's too strong.

yer, Max is like that, he's strong for a pup, and will generally try run towards any dog, or CAR, or human or anything that moves. being a herding dog, he just wants to round up whatever it is that comes his way. Its their nature. If I run with him and he starts having a go... I'll just slow down and walk, and give him a bit of a tug on the lead, he soon picks up pace again, he loves to run, and always runs in front of me.

I guess it's all about training, walking or running a dog requires a lot of training. Also dont want him to get into the habit of running all the time, otherwise when I want to walk him he'll be expecting a run.

I ran a 2:20 on the 800 last year. Do you do the 3200? I hope to break 11:00 on the 3200 this year. My fastest 5k (Cross Country this year) is 18:06.
I am a Senior, so that isn't that great, I know, but I used to be really bad(consistently 21-22 for a 5k), then last year I ran track (first time since grade school when my mile pr was 7:30) and this year I was actually decent at CC, we went to state.
2:33 800
5:29 1500
5:31 1600
11:54.3 3200
