Does it always seem to underestimate without calibration, or does it sometimes overestimate, also?

I got mine last week and I'm five runs and 33.5 miles in. So when July comes, it's on like Donkey Kong. ;) But I won't be winning any fastest mile awards (my pace is just under 9 min/mile and my fastest mile during a training run in the past five days has been in the low 8s...)

it can overestimate also. my girlfriend has one, and she has never calibrated it. we sometimes run together, and it will say she ran farther, and a lot faster than me, even though we ran together.

hopefully ziwi will see that you want to sign up, and will add you :)

I has sent PM! I has sent PM!!! ;) And I iz runnin. :)

Good for you:D

Re calibration........mine has drifted.
losing approx 25 metres per km (10 metres per 400).

Can temperature cause a change?
maybe it's just slowly drifted over 7 months?

losing 1km in 40km
I can cope with that.

I'm happy to be running.

Mmm, I guess it's possible that temperature has an effect by adjusting the elasticity of the accelerometer slightly, but it should be a tiny effect. Mmm... dunno. I'm with you. Just happy to be running. ;) And Sarah was all disturbed that her data when on a treadmill was wildly inaccurate (we bought our Nike+ kits within a few days of each other), but she was mollified by the fact that everyone else's data is way off on a treadmill too. :D

I plan on hitting 100 miles on my Nike+ by the middle of next week. :)

And I'm in the challenges now, thanks to Ziwi. Is it supposed to say I have no run data? I guess my runs before the challenges don't count! :p

welcome to the challenges! :)

i don't don't know about everyone else, but the heat is killing me. it seems i always pick the hottest time of the day to run. i just got through running an 18:26 5k, and it like to kill me. i seriously think i'm suffering from heat exhaustion right now. it's hot as blue blazes outside

Plus the humidity, especially in Georgia.

On Sunday I did a 10 miler, and the temperature was only 84°, but the humidity was 80% as well. It makes it hard to breathe and to cool off when it's that humid.

This morning I just did 4 miles. The temp was 74°, but the humidity was 93%. Yikes. Of course, it's drying out and down to about 50% right now. I should have waited.

Congrats on the fantastic 5K time, by the way!

yeah the humidity is terrible here. and it's hard to run after working out in it all day.

thanks

Egh, speaking of heat and humidity... has anyone else been having problems with gnats on the post-rain day? I've had a couple of runs that were just nasty... I had to wipe them off my face every few minutes, and when I got home, my shoulders and neckline were covered in them. So gross. :(

Anyway, though, woohoo, almost 71 miles on my Nike+ kit so far, still hoping to reach 100 this week, although it's kind of nasty outside right now, and I'm not sure about outdoor running today. Also, I gave blood, so I have to think about whether I need to lay off for the day or not.

Plus, final-score.com e-mailed me another 20% off >$50 coupon, so I'ma thinking about getting my next running shoes in advance. :D I think this pair has another 200 miles in it or so.

Does anyone else here use Saucony Grid Omnis or Progrid Omnis? I'm wondering if anyone who likes these shoes has had experience with the Brooks equivalents, like the Adrenaline GTS?

P.S. I just jury-rigged my sensor into my shoelaces, and it works wonderfully. The pouches are nice, but I wouldn't overly feel like they're necessary. An example of what you can do is get some duct tape, cut two pieces that are longer than the sensor, and sandwich the sensor between them. Then just punch holes on the two long sides and put it into the laces. Cost: $0.20 or so. ;) Just make sure the sensor is somewhere stable, like between the tongue and laces, and apparently it also needs to be oriented with the long axis along the long axis of the shoe. A number of people have reported using a dremel to grind out a hole under their insole, like the Nike shoes have, but I have not yet been so courageous.

I'd originally done something similar to that, only with shrink-wrap instead of duct tape. I eventually just got the pouch since it was under $10 or something like that, I think (my wife bought them for us).

The pouch is nice since you can take it off the shoes when you want/need to. Plus it looks better ;)

yeah i agree....i have a pouch also. it's just easier and better in my opinion

Broke the 250k mark for the month, something I couldn't do in 31 days last month, and something I was able to do in 29 this month. Very proud of myself :)

However, still in a very distant third..

Congratulations, Rick! :D

I'm at 94.94 miles (on my Nike+... I don't know my full month mileage, but I would estimate it at the low 200 miles, as I started using the Nike+ exactly mid-month). With any luck at all, there will not be an unannounced hurricane visit tomorrow and I will hit 100 miles on the Nike+. Of which I will be proud. ;)

Well done!
Congratulations.
Feels good to achieve a goal.

Congrats, but even though you are a distant 3rd, your average mile time is much better than those ahead of you - so essentially you are getting a workout in more efficiently than those with average times worse than yours. That is why the distance challenge seems pointless to me as it is all based on the amount of time you spend doing it versus actual training for something and continuing to improve your average pace per mile. I am in this for training and getting in shape - I was using this as motivation, but it just seems like the rules should be changed or something to reward training versus how much time a month I can spend walking or running or in many cases for folks - both.

Maybe the average of all participants is calculated and the one above that average with the best pace per mile should win...who knows - but this stuff is just too repetitive and demotivating when even though the folks above you in the standings can run faster in the 5K, 10K and mile their average pace in the overall distance challenge does not reflect that. If walking is your workout then fine that is what you would do, but I would not expect to see you win the mile 5K or 10K - that means you are a runner and if you are a runner and winning a 5K or 10K timed challenge then the average pace of your training should reflect that. That is just my .02 - I am not that hung up on winning a virtual trophy that bad where I would sacrifice my regimine - the reward for me is seeing my average pace go down month after month - I am proud of that so I display it - I run to get in shape and get better at it not to win Nike+ trophys. This is from me - how does the guy who struggles to put in the 40 miles a month in this challenge feel? I don't know that they feel motivated by it, but it is what it is I guess.

Ziwi, I am in complete agreement with you. Distance is a goal, but lowering my average time is a goal as well, and one I place above overall distance. I find the goal setting on Nike+ to be very helpful in that regard.

I think a distance/ average pace challenge sounds like an awesome idea, if only there was a way to set it up.

Oone of these days I'm going to make it to the track, and re-calibrate my iPod. If it's accurate, I hope to shave 30 second off my pace.
