I'm going to start off walking and hopefully as summer goes on start jogging. Do these challenges for number of miles include walking or just running?

I think that if you're walking as part of an exercise program, we'd all agree that counts for the challenges. :)

emw, I'm not sure how to get a run elevation graph... where'd you get yours?

I ran a 10k race today. 48:22. The iPod said I was around 7.9k when I finished. Makes me wonder how far I'm really running on a daily basis.

well, that's pretty bad. But I bet you ran your 10k a lot faster than you usually train, and more to the point, faster than you ran when you calibrated your sensor, right? The further you are from the pace you calibrated at, the less accurate the sensor becomes. So while you might not be getting credit for every mile, I bet it's usually a LOT closer than 80%.

After not using my sensor for a few months I plan to start jogging again since I am done with classes. however my sensor appears to have died. any ideas?

first, try pressing the button on the bottom to make sure it wasn't just in sleep mode.

If really dead, then take it to an apple store and they will probably give you a new one.

good job :) sorry about the sensor. mine is the same though. never all that accurate - maybe not quite that bad, but actually, yeah, that bad when i run faster

glad that you're going to join us again.

Yeah, my sensor has always been pretty bad. Sunday was just confirmation. I knew once I stepped down on the 5k spray painted on the road and the iPod goes '4km complete' it was going to be way off. It was also handy, because I just paced myself for a normal 8k run, and then I had a little extra in the tank to sprint, and I use the term sprint loosely, for my last 1km.

Ok, I've got all my equipment and have started working out, already have four "runs" posted--they're actually walks.

My Nike user name is birchswinger

I don't really know how to join the community--does someone send me an invite?

Thanks!

EDIT:
Also, is calibrating it neccessary, or do you think it's "good enough"? There's a straight stretch of road I measured with my car that is .3 miles that the iPod registered as .33....I didn't want to calibrate it based on that "known" distance as I don't know how accurate my car is either!

I guess I can find a track and calibrate there if you all suggest that it's needed?

send a PM to ziwi and he will add you to whatever challenges you want. :)

eh, I find that it's not very accurate calibrated or not. (Some people have better results than I do though.) So IMO yours is doing pretty well, especially since cars don't have 100ths, and I wouldn't worry about finding a track unless it's really easy to do so.

Yeah, my sensor has always been pretty bad.

I'd definitely recalibrate. You're likely running quite a bit further (even if only 10-15%) than what your iPod mileage states. You're also much faster. A 48 minute 10 k is pretty good.

Hmmm.... I'm a bit worried about my sensor. For a while now it's been defaulting to 10K even if I (try to) set a custom distance, and to make thing even worse this morning - after a long (8.6K) and slow workout - Paula Radcliff came on and congratulated me on a new record for the Mile...

So, when looking at the nano, all the records are gone, and only two new ones (a very slow record for the 1K and another for the 1M).

Time for yet another reset, I think (after I've sync'ed it, that is), and maybe even a full restore... :(

Just ordered

one for my wife's B-day. This is a great thread. I will have her join once she gets everything. Thanks for the marware link. We don't like Nike shoes so that is a good tool to have non Nike can use it also. I wish I could wear an iPod when I run in Afghanistan, would be nice to know how far I actually run. Good luck to everone meeting the challenges.

Paula has congratulated me for completing another 500k on each of my last 5 runs. I'm finding it a bit odd to be honest.

May 21st update:

The distance challenge is proceeding as normal with the top 2 competitors (QCassidy and twood) flip flopping positions like presidential candidates. Currently QCassidy has the lead with 133.09 miles in so far with 10 days left, twood is currently 2nd with 127.23. Thrawn is in 3rd by himself but perhaps too far back to challenge the leaders at 107.56 followed by rickvanr in striking distance of 3rd with 96.43, then rounding out the top 5 is Foggy76 with 68.14 miles.

Currently, we have 22 of the invited 39 participants with mileage logged - not too bad (56%) so either start running or upload your data ;)

On to the racing realm, we have Dsyntak with the lead in the mile at 6:34 followed by QCassidy at 6:49 and believe it or not ziwi at 7:06.

The 5K has the same folks in the same order with the times of 20:21, 21:55 and 22:13 respectively.

The 10K follows the same suit again with the times of 44:08, 44:41 and 46:02 - it is interesting that the smae people and same order go through each or of the races.

As usual anyone who wants to join can PM me or link up in the thread with the nike+ name and the challenges they want to be in.

Keep up the good work in meeting the distance goals the 100 mile one seems to have motivated a few folks - great stuff. Keep on running!

She is impressed with me too.
Most runs since I passed 500KM she has told me of my great effort.......another 500KM:confused:

Also, whatever time I get for the mile, Lance or Paula will tell me I've just got a new personal best, even though it's not a new best. The time can be a minute slower than my PB.

I restored it after a while of hearing the 500KM message - now I will really have to wait for the next 500KM...nothing wrong with a restore from time to time...

I got that every run for a while, and then it just stopped. No resetting the ipod or anything... just disappeared as suddenly as it had come. There are clearly some bugs in the software.

Final Stretch in May

This is the last week in May and the distance challenge is producing record numbers. It is neck and neck for QCassidy and Twood standing at 177.65 and 176.25 respectively. It is a 2 horse race here folks, who will be taking home the virtual trophy this month? rickvanr is setting a new record for monthly total from what I see and stands in 3rd alone at 140.05, New runner foggy76 is in 4th place currently with 110.25 and Thrawn is standing in 5th at 107.56.

24 of the 40 registered have logged mileage this month - 4 days left - log some miles - 1 is a start. ;)

The 1 mile, 5K and 10K go through the end of June so I would expect more jockeying for position there, but more or less it seems to be the same top 3 or 4 runners in varying orders.

Keep adding to the 100, 250 and 500 mile by the end of the year challenges - every mile counts toward your goal - how far have you gone?

I will set up the June challenges shortly - I try to get everyone back in, but sometimes I miss one or two due to typo's - just let me know - it is not a slight - just an honest mistake.

Keep on running.

Debating running a 10k tonight to try an break 250k for the month. We'll see how I feel when I get out there. I'm also excited about my pace this month, I'm down around 5 sec/km from last month and I've been going farther.
