Aside from New VS Old, does anyone actually have a valid reason as to why they prefer USB C? There are a lot of empty comments here that don’t go into detail as to why they chose one or the other.

If Apple can kill off an industry standard 3.5 mm headphone jack on the iPhone, what makes anyone think they will move to adopt an industry standard USB-C? (Especially if it isn’t that “standard”).

What they probably want to do is kill off the lightning port altogether and just waiting for a good time to do it.

Promote Bluetooth, Airdrop, wireless charging and wireless CarPlay and they can remove the lightning connector (making iPhones cheaper to manufacture) and avoid putting a charger and cable in the box (lowering sales costs). That’s why we still have crappy 5W chargers and they are working on AirPower.

The future iPhone will have NO ports.

I'd like to replace my iPhone and laptop with my iPad Pro and watch. I want NO iPhone (it's as outdated and useless as the lightning port).

I want an iPad that is MacOS when in landscape mode connected to a keyboard, and is iOS when portrait or not connected to a keyboard.

I want iOS apps run like widgets (from OS X 10.4) on the MacOS base.

I want to use my watch and airpods for phone calls. I want airpods that hot swap between the iPad and the watch.

I want my pencil, watch, and airpods, chargeable from my iPad so I have ONE USB-C cable to worry about. The small devices could charge in the space made between the iPad and keyboard when the iPad is open and sitting at an angle.

I want to worry about fewer cables, fewer devices, and still have the service I need.

One iPad and one watch would do it.

But, we're more worried about doing it the way we've always done it, instead of shaking things up and doing it the new way. What do I know?

100% wont happen in 2019. Not sure why people think a year out from iPads boom phones. It’s a process, 2020 kiddies.

This morning, we asked our readers on Twitter if they'd prefer to see USB-C ports or Lightning ports in the 2019 iPhone lineup, and the results so far are clear -- MacRumors readers are ready to transition to USB-C.

With more than 15,000 responses across both platforms at the time this article was written, 74% of Twitter users have chosen USB-C over Lightning, as have 71% of Facebook users.

macrumorsusbclightning-800x344.jpg

There have been some rumors suggesting Apple is at least considering transitioning to USB-C in the 2019 iPhone lineup, with USB-C prototypes supposedly floating around, but the most recent information from Japanese site Mac Otakara suggests Apple will continue to use Lightning for the 2019 iPhone lineup.

Given the mixed rumors, it's looking like we may not be seeing a shift to USB-C in 2019, but it's still possible, and the rumors are encouraging because it means we may see a transition away from Lightning in the near future. iPhones in 2020 or 2021 could feature USB-C, even if the 2019 iPhones don't.

Many current iPhone users may be reluctant to shift from Lightning ports because they've spent years collecting Lightning-based accessories, but there are some benefits to be aware of. With USB-C, iPhones would charge faster than with the current 5W iPhone adapter and Lightning cable setup, and cables would be interchangeable with cables for the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iPad lineup.

With USB-C support for the iPhone, a single cable could be used to charge all of the above listed devices, and existing power adapters for these devices would fast charge the iPhone, providing at least 50% power in 30 minutes and 80% power within an hour.

Here’s a crazy idea: why not make it an option like storage? Just choose if you want your phone to have a lightning or usb c port and adapter in the box.

I have no idea what people do to cables. I have had dozens of devices always as a mobile user often with several "stops" a day and taken them all over the world and I have NEVER had even one cable fail. 30 pin, Lightning, Magsafe, Micro USB, whatever....

All I can say is that you are AWESOME! I envy you. I’m on the road/air/hotel/overseas 300+ days a year and I destroy cables. My kids are even worse on them than me. The cables end up getting bent at weird angles in hotels, cars and planes. I just bought two new lighting cables this evening for my kids. My wife seems to go through them less than the rest of us.

The best connector was MagSafe. And why did no one upgrade the MagSafe to also transfer data? That would’ve been fantastic.

my MBP is USB C my IPP is USB C, using a normal USB to lighting is a PIA right now for me. so I want them all USB-C
Ownership of any USB-C Apple products is probably around 5% of the 1.4 billion active iOS devices. So 95% of users aren’t in your situation. Sure, it would be nice for those with newer MacBooks/iPad Pro but that’s a very, very small user base.

Other than the obvious benefit of not needing different charging cables (for the small number of users to which that applies), I’m not sure why so many people think moving to USB-C is desirable. I don’t expect Apple to switch to USB-C for iPhone or non-Pro iPads ever, let alone this year or next.

I've had one Lightning cable break at the connector, but it was a non-certified cable. That's why Apple has the MFi program... to ensure that certain standards are met. So I think your argument is weak. If you _choose_ to purchase non-MFi products, you get what you pay for.

Nice try. I suspect that you're not replacing these cables because of the connector, and that's what this article is about. You're right, though. Apple really needs to redesign their cables.

For sure, you’re right. I’ve never had an issue with any connector. From 30 pin, lighting, USB-C or any of the other MacBook connectors I’ve used since 2007. But my point is still valid since none of the connectors work without cables.

I prefer the lightening connector, I think Apple did a great job with the lightning connector.

I also don't want to have to go through yet another multi-year period with hotel rooms that don't have compatible iPhone docking stations.

I prefer the lightning connector, but in many ways don't really care. What I do want is the ability to have a charging cable and headphones/earbuds plugged in at the same time, without 3rd party dongles that are either crazy expensive or marginally functional. Yes I used wired earbuds everyday and want to continue using them.

Hotels have been installing Qi chargers directly into bedside tables or alarm clocks. It’s finally a truly universal charger standard. Virtually every phone from the past couple of years has Qi. There’ll be Qi chargers everywhere way before the transition from USB-A to USB-C is complete.

Dare I point out the obvious problem. You asked Twitter and Facebook users.

Lightning works. Ubiquity of cords. Stable and fast connection. Don't see a need to change.

I think the lightning plug is technically better. It is smaller yet plenty sturdy. But USB C is the future. Let’s just get there already. The next step after USB C will be pure wireless.

I really don’t use lighting to charge my iPhone. It’s wireless all the way. However, wireless charging is very inefficient and slow compared to fast charging on USB C (fast charging on some Androids seems super fast). When it comes to data transfers USB C beats any wireless solution hands down.

Either some mistake or a bit of false news here.

Lightning is NOT what limits iphone charging speed, as the author must know. The limit is the power of the charger. An iPhone using the same 5W charger would charge at the same speed whether connected by USB C or Lightning. An iPhone would charge faster, using either Lightning or USB C, using a more powerful charger. The fix is the power of the charger not the change of connecter standard.

I guess that USB C would not be a bad thing overall, but charging time is NOT one of the justifications.

My preference would be to get rid of all of the plug-in connections on the phone. How long is it going to take to move fully forwards on this? How long before SIM cards are a thing of the past? Or are you still hoping for a retrograde step to put back an audio jack?

Why would anyone want a proprietary lightning port when there's an industry standard port that does the job just as well?
Because the above mentioned industry standard is a worse option. USB c has a bigger connector and port and both the connector and the port are more fragile and harder to clean.
[doublepost=1549956082][/doublepost]
Can you cite a source indicating that USB-C ports have major issues with the center pin breaking off? Because I've never heard of that.
Would you need a spruce if I told you that crystal cups break more often than plastic cups when dropped?

i suspect this is the amount of apple employess or payroll forum users, now we at least know it. its just an educated guess, so no need to take action against me - first ammendment!

Or that it's just yet another standard that most people don't care about. I don't have anything USB-C nor care for it. Lightning works perfectly fine and have enough cables and accessories that support it. USB-C doesn't offer any benefit over it nor the need to migrate.

is there really a hotel with an iphone docking station, when usb-c becomes standard on 80percent of world - wide phones?
i hardly doubt ...

People who read tech forums like this one understand the benefits of USB and are willing to buy new cables and all that to make the switch, but you have to remember that the majority of normal humans absolutely do not understand or care about the differences between lightning vs USB-C, and would see this only as a greedy cash grab by Apple. In many customers minds, we JUST finished switching from the original dock connector to lightning. Even though I would like to see it myself, it would be a very unpopular move for Apple right now.

come on, haha ... really
and the prices apple takes are popular?
the rip off ports is popular?

haha, oh my ...

What’s interesting is Apple gets a lot of flak for cables that die before the device, but people are replacing their competitors cables in the same 2 year span but many times the techies have been forced to upgrade android devices by then to be able to upgrade the OS.
What you wrote doesn't make much sense but buying a new phone just to get a new OS number is just choice( a choice not made by most users anyway so reality contradicts you).
But if the charging cable breaks you are actually forced to buy a new one because even if somebody is mostly relying on "inductive charging", all the situations that come in handy with using a cable can't be overlooked(like charging your phone form an external battery).
Apple's own charging cables are way more fragile even in comparison with charging cables that come with cheap Chinese phones. That's quite shameful.

just ONE simple question, how do you connect your airpods to either your iphone or your ipad, haha - meanwhile you need a paar of headphones for every device to carry around. haha

this is all so mad ... and still people are defending everything apple does, its absurd!!!

However, I’m sure I read somewhere that Apple has stuck with lightning as the connector is smaller and, especially on the phones, the space is tight. On an iPad it’s less of an issue obviously.

Really? The 2018 iPad Pro is 5.9mm thick and it has a USB-C. Apple's thinnest iphone is 6.9mm.
Things don't add up man, this excuse makes doesn't work.

I'm looking at the new Macbooks, iPad Pro's and what you wrote sounds quite awkward.

before we sold my wife's iPhone 7 (which broke twice), we were at lightning cable number 4, i think. they just keep breaking, in our case they always started to rust on the golden contacts.

in the other hand, today I'm still using the usb-c cable that came with my Nexus 5x and the usb-c travel adapter i bought from the Google store 3 years ago.

lightning is probably the worst part of the worst part of the apple eco system

It’s a cute little vain attempt at getting Apple to notice, but does MacRumors honestly believe they hold any industry weight whatsoever? Perhaps some self-reflection on your place in the world as a gossip rag is necessary.
