There have been some rumors suggesting Apple is at least considering transitioning to USB-C in the 2019 iPhone lineup, with USB-C prototypes supposedly floating around, but the most recent information from Japanese site Mac Otakara suggests Apple will continue to use Lightning for the 2019 iPhone lineup.
Given the mixed rumors, it's looking like we may not be seeing a shift to USB-C in 2019, but it's still possible, and the rumors are encouraging because it means we may see a transition away from Lightning in the near future. iPhones in 2020 or 2021 could feature USB-C, even if the 2019 iPhones don't.
Many current iPhone users may be reluctant to shift from Lightning ports because they've spent years collecting Lightning-based accessories, but there are some benefits to be aware of. With USB-C, iPhones would charge faster than with the current 5W iPhone adapter and Lightning cable setup, and cables would be interchangeable with cables for the MacBook, MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iPad lineup.
With USB-C support for the iPhone, a single cable could be used to charge all of the above listed devices, and existing power adapters for these devices would fast charge the iPhone, providing at least 50% power in 30 minutes and 80% power within an hour.

Why not go with an entirely new proprietary port that combines USB-C and Lightning into USBightning-C? You'll still have to replace your Lightning cables, and it won't be compatible with USB-C, but it'll look like both connectors.

This is the future!
I have no idea what people do to cables. I have had dozens of devices always as a mobile user often with several "stops" a day and taken them all over the world and I have NEVER had even one cable fail. 30 pin, Lightning, Magsafe, Micro USB, whatever....
Ownership of any USB-C Apple products is probably around 5% of the 1.4 billion active iOS devices. So 95% of users aren’t in your situation. Sure, it would be nice for those with newer MacBooks/iPad Pro but that’s a very, very small user base.my MBP is USB C my IPP is USB C, using a normal USB to lighting is a PIA right now for me. so I want them all USB-C
I've had one Lightning cable break at the connector, but it was a non-certified cable. That's why Apple has the MFi program... to ensure that certain standards are met. So I think your argument is weak. If you _choose_ to purchase non-MFi products, you get what you pay for.

Nice try. I suspect that you're not replacing these cables because of the connector, and that's what this article is about. You're right, though. Apple really needs to redesign their cables.
I prefer the lightening connector, I think Apple did a great job with the lightning connector.
I also don't want to have to go through yet another multi-year period with hotel rooms that don't have compatible iPhone docking stations.

I think the lightning plug is technically better. It is smaller yet plenty sturdy. But USB C is the future. Let’s just get there already. The next step after USB C will be pure wireless.
Either some mistake or a bit of false news here.

Because the above mentioned industry standard is a worse option. USB c has a bigger connector and port and both the connector and the port are more fragile and harder to clean. Why would anyone want a proprietary lightning port when there's an industry standard port that does the job just as well?
Would you need a spruce if I told you that crystal cups break more often than plastic cups when dropped? Can you cite a source indicating that USB-C ports have major issues with the center pin breaking off? Because I've never heard of that.
Why would anyone want a proprietary lightning port when there's an industry standard port that does the job just as well?
i suspect this is the amount of apple employess or payroll forum users, now we at least know it. its just an educated guess, so no need to take action against me - first ammendment!

People who read tech forums like this one understand the benefits of USB and are willing to buy new cables and all that to make the switch, but you have to remember that the majority of normal humans absolutely do not understand or care about the differences between lightning vs USB-C, and would see this only as a greedy cash grab by Apple. In many customers minds, we JUST finished switching from the original dock connector to lightning. Even though I would like to see it myself, it would be a very unpopular move for Apple right now.
What you wrote doesn't make much sense but buying a new phone just to get a new OS number is just choice( a choice not made by most users anyway so reality contradicts you). What’s interesting is Apple gets a lot of flak for cables that die before the device, but people are replacing their competitors cables in the same 2 year span but many times the techies have been forced to upgrade android devices by then to be able to upgrade the OS.
However, I’m sure I read somewhere that Apple has stuck with lightning as the connector is smaller and, especially on the phones, the space is tight. On an iPad it’s less of an issue obviously.
I'm looking at the new Macbooks, iPad Pro's and what you wrote sounds quite awkward.Or that it's just yet another standard that most people don't care about. I don't have anything USB-C nor care for it. Lightning works perfectly fine and have enough cables and accessories that support it. USB-C doesn't offer any benefit over it nor the need to migrate.
Yet, Apple fanboys will spin that one about how a proprietary port is much better. Why would anyone want a proprietary lightning port when there's an industry standard port that does the job just as well?
I don't think anyone has 20 working lightning cablesThey already have 20 Lightning cables.
