Where's the space for the banner ads? unless you wanted to pay for MR expenses yourself. :D

Windows... was my first impression.

Yeah a bit like the Luna theme in XP, anyway nice try ;)

I like the colors of MR as they are, the only thing might be some buttons and fonts that all

What do you guys think of a design like this? I really tried hard to make it non-flashy, maclike yet non-aqua, and easy on 56kers all at the same time -

Check it out here

Comments?

I like, though i think it needs a few curves, to many sharp edges at the moment I think.

I updated the design with rounded top corners on newsposts and a placeholder for banner ads. I wou've added adspace for the side text ads too, but I was too lazy :p

See it here

I'm curious to hear Arn's opinion on the design.. I'm guessing he'll say it has too much color :(

Hmm... doesn't feel like XP to me *shrugs*. The current colors are ok I suppose, but they feel like a giant beige monitor with blue/red stickers (blegh)

I have to say, I do quite like that :)

I have to say, I don't quite like that.

MacRumors looks nice as is. If that were a theme so that you could have that for yourself then fine... but it just doesn't look right...

Please give some pointers so I can improve... I'm trying really hard to please all crowds here.

I personally like the way Invision Boards look. You can see it in action at Urban Planet.

The current MacRumors operates a lot like Invision does, but I tend to favor the smaller fonts that Invision Boards have. Takes up less space.

perhaps we could add just one other theme here at MR, like indigo's?

that way at least we have a choice of which we prefer.....because as much as i love this place, i would love a bit more color

Some darkening around the edges of the various buttons might look nicer. As if they had a shadow around them... but a very thin one. The color used for the background of the "Mac Polls" and "Posted by Whomever" doesn't fit into the theme well. Maybe something like the brushed metal theme but without the brush marks in it... I'd suggest pulling some green off of it. That may help.

I'm just trying to help you... if it turns out looking good then kudos! But right now I don't like it. Hence the feedback.

Thing is... that's a very cliché design you've got going. Yes, It's hard to be different and efficient with bandwidth while still having an original, beautiful and (most importantly) usable theme, but it can be done.

I would take some more interest in this proposed redesign, but first and foremost, MacRumors is a News site and the current index page design is not distracting from the content. The forums are there for discussion, not flash. And lastly, I know that those who spent a helluva lotta time, patience and energy working on the current layout and would hate to see all of that go to the trash so soon.

And also, the design that you are proposing would be an almost complete makeover. You must have NO idea how much work that would actually be.

[edit]
You also forgot two incredibly important things:
1 - Secondary navigation space
2 - Search bar at the top of the page (usability)

I've actually skinned a few sites and forums to match before, and although it was a day or so's work, it wasn't that hard.

The current theme seems to be popular with the older members of the board - It be nice to have something for the members who like color (ie the young ones, like me ;) :p )

I think all the boxes, left and right need curved corners, but apart from that it looks pretty dam good! Well Done!

I really like the design, stronger colours while still looking sleek, although i wouldn't like the forum colours to change as they are about the only ones I know that are easy on the eye (white / light colour backgrounds).

The only things i can think of to improve are 1. The search box, 2. The secondary menubar for other options.

PS I like having the side boxes as square corners as it differentiates those boxes better from the main news stories (currently the side boxes are blue while the main stories are red), I also dont think it is much of a major overhaul of the original as the layout is exactly the same.
