I'm not that familiar with the service_worker. Part of Xenforo. Looks like used for backgrounds tasks, so could be a culprit, except it's stock Xenforo.

- So logged out still happens. So it's not the editor.
- Could you try turning Javascript off in Safari? And seeing if it recurs? The site is mostly functional without Javascript. At this point just eliminating things seems the only real way to go. Thanks for taking the time to do all this.

Settings -> Safari -> Advanced -> Uncheck Javascript

Clearing website data also could help if there is some cached data that is causing a conflict. But I know that's a pain to do.

If I reboot, don't sign in to MR:

Actually, I get the same logged in now too-- no activity.

Same happened last night after a reboot. Maybe site data is getting cleared when I reboot or something.

I'll have to wait for it to trigger again and will try w/o JS and clearing site data.

Site received a minor Xenforo update today. I don't know if it will affect anything, but frankly I have no idea what's causing it anyway, so it might :)

I haven't had much time to experiment, but I have checked the loading periodically and haven't seen this problem trigger in a serious way since the last update. It's running about 6.8% CPU, presumably because of the ongoing animation, but it's not ramping up to 85+% and getting worryingly hot.

It's still running pretty high high with Wipr off. The forum pages don't seem bad without it, but the front page is 30-50% CPU after 20s or so (much lower with it).

A few things have happened since the last overheat episode: there was the update to MR, there was an update to Wipr rules, and I rebooted the phone. The last time I rebooted on Monday, it got better for a while, but by Tuesday it was running hot again. This time it doesn't seem to have gotten bad again yet, so maybe it was fixed somewhere.

I'll keep looking periodically and let you know if it goes bad again, but the patch may have solved it.

Hard to imagine the unrelated patch would do it and @eicca was still complaining in another thread - but... eicca you can try rebooting or clearing browser data and see if that helps (see above).

Nope, still cooking both my 12 Mini and old MacBook Pro.

I don’t notice any issues on the Mac Pro but then again I can’t bog that computer down no matter how hard I try. I’ll have to see if activity monitor reveals anything on it.

Can you try turning Javascript off completely and seeing if it can happen?

If anyone is still having problems,

Here is something that will help me isolate it.

1. Scroll to bottom of page, and pick a theme "MacRumors Light" or "MacRumors Dark" depending on your preferences. "MacRumors Autodetect" won't work.
2. Visit: https://forums.macrumors.com/mr-utils/debug.php
3. It will tell you "Debug On"
4. Browse forums.

Let me know if it recurs.

What this does is removes all javascript that isn't stock Xenforo from the threads (which breaks the Autodetect theme)

- Some things might behave odd since I just ripped out javascript. But you should be able to browse fine.
- To go back to normal, re-visit the debug url in #2, and it will toggle it off
- important to remember you have to choose a light or dark style. The auto detect won’t work without the scripts removed.

If it doesn’t happen, I can slowly add things back to isolate it.

Hi!
Followed the steps here.
Still have the issue. iOS 15.1, Safari data cleaned yesterday.
The metal frame near the volume buttons is too hot to touch while browsing MR forums.

With iPhone > Settings > Safari > Advanced > Javascript > OFF:
