10:35am PDT - “Here’s the geekout for developers”. Widgets, scripts, Java: they’ll just work. Cocoa - Xcode: small tweak, recompile. Carbon - Xcode - a few weeks of tweaking, recompile. Carbon- Metroworks: Move to XCode.

10:37am PDT - There’s a checkbox for builds: “Intel, PowerPC” that makes a cross-platform single binary.

10:38am PDT - Theo Gray, cofounder of Wolfram Research, comes onstage to talk about porting Mathematica in the past 5 days.

10:34 am Development machines will be in the hands of developers soon. Video playing explaining how to compile for Intel. Widgets, Scripts, Java, all already work...Cocoa programs need but a small tweak. Carbon programs will take a couple of weeks.

10:36 am We're releasing XCode 2.1. It can compile a Universal Binary (FAT binary). Available to everybody at registration desk following the keynote.

10:38 am Mathematica 5 for Mac OS X was ported to Intel last week

19:39 - efoto opens a bottle of wine, no glass. He begins to drink excessively from the small opening with just enough control to not spill on the last bit of TRUE Apple he has, his PowerBook.

We now officially need a crying emoticon for the forums....excessive emoticon use should be lifted for at least one to two weeks to allow proper mourning.

10:39am PDT - “I get the most ridiculous phone calls from Apple sometimes. This was like 9 c’clock at night and he says, ‘I can’t tell you what it is, but …” they flew out a developer with source code to do a demo for today.

i hope u sent that cheque !!!!!! might be a collectors item in 2 years
Yeah :)

Glad she'll be able to have a bit of G4 lovin' without... ugh. Not even a PPC, they're using Penttium 4s. This is horrible.

I can't believe it. Without PowerPC what makes apple different, I mean their OS, but it's now basic PC hardware. What happened to "think different!?"

10:38 am Mathematica 5 for Mac OS X was ported to Intel last week...in just two hours. Working version in 20 hours.

Completely agree :(

10:40am PDT - Theo is hilarious. “I said, ‘I’ll send out our crack team of Mac developers that we keep on standby.’” Turns to guy standing next to computer. “That’s you, Rob.”

10:41am PDT - Theo says it took 2 days to get it ported: “We had a lot of resources. There’s Rob, there’s Apple … your mileage may vary. But his biggest problem was figuring out what to do with the rest of the weekend.”

10:42am PDT - Mathematica demo. This stuff always makes me wish I’d studied harder at MIT.

What has always made Apple differnet is the OS, so nothing has changed at all.

Nothing.

Look's like the hints in Tiger for the next PM CPU were true, Apple asked IBM for their first 40k units and IBM probably was unable to deliver.

Apple forced to release a speed bump PM instead.

Gets pissed at IBM, and picks up the red phone. :(

10:43am PDT - Theo shows a 3D diagram being built and modified on the fly. “It could be experimental architecture, something you’d see in Vegas, or it could be candidate nanotech architecture.”

They can't live off the iPod Halo effect forever. The hardware sales have slowed and the promised 3ghz G5 that never showed was quite an embarrasment. This is Apple taking a step in the big arena.

I think we may see apple turn into another MS in the next 5 years. Just a software manufacturer putting an OS out.
What's stopping this stuff working on home-built PCs? Who would buy a Mac?
I don't understand!?
Does he mean that you will have to buy a Mac still, or eventually all intel-based systems will run OS X?
