You see the problem with IBMs or clones or intel boxes is that there are so many types of them - its not only the OS (microsoft) thats a problem but also the hardware. So how is Apple going to control the hardware side ??? or is Apple going to become the new MS

Same way they do now. By building the computers themselves.

This isn't that hard to understand people. It will still be closed platform, just with an Intel CPU inside.

so what does this truely mean? that there is indeed an x86 version of Mac OS X? What is to become of Apple hardware division? are they basically going to sell Pentium 4 Boxes in a G5 enclosure? No one is going to buy them if they can buy a $300 PC from dell and install OSX on it...

there gotta be some kind of 'catch' or something, or limitation in the new Intel chipset....

its also GUARANTEED that this current Intel OS X version is going to be leaked onto the internet once its confirmed or hacked to run on any PC

10:53am PDT - Bruce Chizen, CEO of Adobe, comes on, jokes that his mom thinks he works for Apple. “The only question I have, Steve, is what took you so long?”

OS X? I don't buy apple for the hardware, I buy for the software. I assume OS X will only run on apple-produced pc's. Steve better address that.
Apple will probably end up a premium PC vendor in the end, but there is a good chance that Apple's contract with Intel may put them in line in front of Dell.

Of course Apple will probably exit the chipset business at some point and concentrate all their R&D on designing boards and enclosures only.

10:52 am Launch of Microsoft Office 2004 was best product launch for Mac OS X. New version of Messenger due for Macs in the next few months. Additionally, a new update for Exchange users. MacBU commits to delivering a "Universal Binary" for Microsoft Office. Jobs also invites Bruce Chizen of Adobe on stage to talk about Intel-based Mac transition. Adobe says it is committed bringing its applications to Intel-based Macs.

10:51am PDT - Unfortunately her speech seems to have been written by a junior flack at Waggener Edstrom or Edelman. Waiting for her to get to a noun… Here we go: Universal binary versions of Office coming, as we just saw.

No, they showed the PPC version running on an x86 mac. That's different from a unversal binary version.

It's gotta be apple-only otherwise why would they partner with intel if you could go get a cheap amd box to run it on.

10:55am PDT - Steve is talking about how Intel engineers turn out to be passionate about their products, just like Apple employees.

10:56am PDT - Paul Otellini, President & CEO of Intel, is on. “I suspect there’s a whole bunch of you who never thought you’d see that [Intel] logo on this stage. I was one of them.”

10:55 am Steve: "In the cultural sense, Intel is a lot like Apple..." Intel is passionate about their products. Intel CEO Paul Otellini invited on stage to talk about Apple's transition.

I hope not !! Im not paying a high prices for an intel box...Im sorry even if it is Apple !!!

This truly sucks.
For so long I enjoyed that my computers were built by the same company that wrote the OS for them. A truly unified product that had better support and understanding because of this uniqueness.
Today is a strange day for apple.

Color me confused. Won't APPLE STILL make MACS?? Except with a different chip inside? I don't get the reason why people are so upset? What am I missing?

Today is a strange day for apple.

And this will continue to be true...Apple will make the machines and the OS.

10:58am PDT - Otellini is telling a timeline story that goes back to founding of Intel in 1968, founding of Apple in 1976. Photo of Jobs and Robert Noyce together. As Markoff said to me this morning, people love to see photos of execs with long hair. Otellini says he asked Jobs, “Is that the last time you wore a tie?” Steve’s answer: “No, it’s the last time I wore a moustache.” 1996: “They set fire to our bunny person!”

Today - its either a new beginning or death......

10:59am PDT - Runs old TV ad: “Apple Computer would like to apologize for toasting the Pentium in public.” Otellini: “Now, we didn’t have a grudge about that…”
