10:45am PDT - Steve back onstage: “Not every application will be Universal on Day 1.” A new technology, Rosetta, will run existing PowerPC apps on Intel. Dynamic binary translation, transparent to users. “Fast (enough),” the slide jokes, that most users won’t know.

10:43am PDT - Theo shows a 3D diagram being built and modified on the fly. “It could be experimental architecture, something you’d see in Vegas, or it could be candidate nanotech architecture.”

You people think PPC was what made Apple different?

OS X is the reason people buy Apple. Not because of their inferior PPC processors.

"But Gary Barnett, research director at analysts Ovum questioned the wisdom of the deal if it goes ahead as rumoured.

"Our advice to Apple is this - If Intel has offered you such a good deal, then by all means adopt a dual architecture strategy," he said. "But to defect from one processor architecture just as it seems about to take off to one that may have already peaked doesn't make any sense to us at all."

Okay, I admit that I'm surprised they're moving to the x86 architecture. I think it will be okay - they' weathered the PowerPC change as well as the OS X transition.

The key will be how they continue to differentiate themselves - will they simply be a software/OS vendor, or will they somehow firmware limit the OS so it only runs on Apple hardware?

Stock not taking much of a hit yet, but it's down about .1%.

honestly what reason is there to buy a Mac now??? other than aesthetics

OS X? I don't buy apple for the hardware, I buy for the software. I assume OS X will only run on apple-produced pc's. Steve better address that.

You see the problem with IBMs or clones or intel boxes is that there are so many types of them - its not only the OS (microsoft) thats a problem but also the hardware. So how is Apple going to control the hardware side ??? or is Apple going to become the new MS
