10:46am PDT - Demo: MS Word PowerPC binary on Intel. Excel spreadsheet. Theyre no notably slower than usual. Photoshop still takes forever to load, but all the plugins work.
10:45am PDT - Steve back onstage: Not every application will be Universal on Day 1. A new technology, Rosetta, will run existing PowerPC apps on Intel. Dynamic binary translation, transparent to users. Fast (enough), the slide jokes, that most users wont know.
Im just gonna buy the cheapest PC i can buy then...but i bet Apple will have some idea to tie the OS to only their system
You people think PPC was what made Apple different?

If this makes the current Powermacs drop in price i'll still buy one, just kuz by the time they port over to intel i'll be in the market again. 😛 😀

Okay, I admit that I'm surprised they're moving to the x86 architecture. I think it will be okay - they' weathered the PowerPC change as well as the OS X transition.
The key will be how they continue to differentiate themselves - will they simply be a software/OS vendor, or will they somehow firmware limit the OS so it only runs on Apple hardware?
Stock not taking much of a hit yet, but it's down about .1%.

You see the problem with IBMs or clones or intel boxes is that there are so many types of them - its not only the OS (microsoft) thats a problem but also the hardware. So how is Apple going to control the hardware side ??? or is Apple going to become the new MS
