If they decide to switch to Intel, I've to rush out and by a Powerbook G4...don't want none'a that Intel crap inside of a nice, shiny Powerbook.

I'm the same except with an iBook. PPC forever!!!

Do you guys think it could just be a stunt by Apple to create a buzz around the WWDC? Create a buzz and then shock everyone by announcing that the G5 has reached 3GHz and the top of the PowerMac line will be a Dual 3.3GHz system which will be available by the last quarter of 2005?

Wishful thinking?

Does the live site show updates the following day as well?

I now have a true reason to HATE not having internet at my flat (as if it wasn't bad enough before) and since it won't broadcast here until 7pm (dang timezones) I won't be able to see it until hours later on Tuesday.

So is there a thread dedicated to what is said (this one) or does Live keep them listed in order as they are stated?

TIA, wish I could stop missing these things....I have missed the last two as well!

Please God, no Intel.
They should have switched years ago. I am looking forward to a new PowerBook with a Pentium-M chip that can last 6 hours +.

If they do switch to Intel today, this will be one of the most important moments in computing history and will change the course of computing.

Power PC not mentioned...

The "Engineers" page for WWDC doesn't say a word about PowerPC, as in "we'll show you how to get the most out of [it]" or similar come-ons.

Still more of a tip-off that it is going to be x86 and not a PPC licensed somehow to Intel?

I agree, Apple will then be a truly software-only company, to my mind, in as far as desktop/laptop computing is concerned.

OSX will never feel the same on X86

what time does the keynote start in ontario, canada?

Arn et al. were kind enough to post a link for all to use in converting from 10 AM PDST to their respective local times.

Does anyone know if they are broadcasting the keynote anywhere? Like the Apple stores like they did last year?

It doesn't appear so. Apple hasn't announced that it would be broadcast or anything. But that's not an absolute, you never know what could happen.

So I was planning on keeping up to date on the switch here at home since I'm now out of school, but it looks like I'll have to wait till I get home to find out...or listen to AM radio when I'm on the road because it'll be big news if Apple switches...

Apple Store: New product?

The Apple Store layout changed a bit last night, with a larger top-center ad for iTrip. I wouldn't be surprised if that gets switched out for some new product.

Anyone else think maybe there's going to be some sort of announcement of a new product shipping immediately with an Intel processor? A Tablet? A video player? A new iPod? A new Intel-based product would be good marketing and help bridge the gap to next year.

I expect to hear a LOT of talk about how easy the transition will be from PPC to Intel. Steve-o: "This will be such a smooth and seamless transition that the only difference consumers will notice is faster processing." Yadda yadda yadda. (I'm not calling it an x86 yet; it could be a brand new, totally different chip.)

Airport Express

I more or less expected that we'd be getting Airport Express 2 at WWDC, but the delivery time on Airport Express has said "same business day" for the last three days and still says that today. Either it's a firmware change only, there will be no lag at all in distribution of the new one, or it won't be revised.

All of the Macs say "same business day" except the 1.8GHz PowerMac, which says "1 to 2 business days."

All three displays say "same business day."

The iPods all say "same business day," including the U2 special edition.

No refreshes? Are today's announcements ALL going to be for new products? Will anything be announced?

Awesome, a StarWars reference to Mac vs. PC arguement, how grand.

Well the iBook is due for an update. Why not switch one the best sellers Apple has ever had first? The PowerBook folks would go nuts, but other then that an iBook with 2MB cache, 533 system bus, and 1.7GHz proc would not be bad.

Would not be bad, however what processor does this use and does it support OSX? I think there is a major potential issue about what this 'merger' or 'partnership' with Intel means. Are we getting existing x86 processors are is it something new Intel is rolling out specifically for Apple (PPC or perhaps something brand new)? Has OSX already been ported to x86 systems!

Continuing the Star Wars theme : "But the prophesy, Steve, you were supposed to bring balance to the force! Not send us to the dark side!"

The New York Times story does not appear to have been updated since late yesterday afternoon, and it plainly identifies the shift to Intel as "beginning in 2006." Apple sometimes one-ups the rumors, but "beginning in 2006" sounds like it was spoon fed as the company line.

But does that REALLY mean 2006?

Tick tock tick tock.....

But does that REALLY mean 2006?

Would waiting until some time next year pretty much kill sells of current hardware?

This would certainly make me think more than once before handing over my credit card.

actually, it should feel exactly the same - that's the whole point - set the two side by side and there will be no way to tell any difference at all unless you look in the about box.

Some people are confused, and have been for years, on who apple competes with. They didn't compete iwth IBM, they don't compete with Intel, they don't compete with Dell. They compete with Microsoft. The PowerPC was supposed to give Apple a competitive advantage, but it didn't work out that way. I was in Best Buy the other day to see the Mac Mini they recently started selling. I asked the guy in there and he said "nice computer, but not much of a processer in there". And that was the only computer they sold that could run Mac OS X. I don't know if Apple is going to do it or not, but imagine if every computer they sold could suddenly run MacOS X and half of htem came with MacOS X and Windows both perinstalled, defaulting to booting into MacOS X with Windows available in a window sort of like existing Macintoshes do with classic. What do you think that would do to Apple's market share?

Just can't wait

I truly hope for something nobody has been expecting. No Intel switch... Say new PB's or a video iPod or at least a new Shuffle, whatever but not Intel. Pleeease!!!

I can only imagine how nervous Steve Jobs might be right now.

Another 'Gandalf the Jobs' quote for you: "I come back to you now, at the turn of the tide." :D

Marketshare sure, but what about all of their quality products? If Apple does pull out of the hardware game and becomes, for argueable purposes, a software company (direct comparison to M$) then what are we supposed to think about our current hardware? Does it become a waste with this 'new' age of Apple/Intel products? I don't see this happening, they won't leave everyone behind but just a statement...

What happens with our durable iBooks and o-so-sexy PBooks? Are they to turn into the 3" ugly as hell notebooks that flood BestBuy shelves and make me queezy to look at them?
I never fully understood how partnering with Intel would lower heat issues, since all the Centrino systems I have used are hotter than my 1.5Ghz G4 PB....but whatever, have faith (gave up on that) and who knows, maybe its just for a new tablet like product and all existing will stay where it is, jump straight to G7s and we will all be wonderfully happy.
