All current Intel CPUs released for Mac OS do not have E-Cores. Alder Lake CPUs are a nice upgrade over Comet Lake / Rocket Lake, however getting full compatibility working with E-Cores is proving to be a bit of a challenge. How cores are assigned to which task is an issue. You could disable E-Cores on a motherboard but you're losing out on some performance.

I mean, that's nice, but macOS on Alder Lake is not a supported thing and never will be.

Anyone looking to upgrade or build a Hackintosh SHOULD take into consideration Alder Lake CPUs.

Anyone looking to build a new x86 Hackintosh today should reconsider that choice. Build a Windows PC and/or get a Mac.

Low wattage high performance is still relevant. It’s better for all of us and the environment. Apple is focused on that.
Good grief, leave the damn environment out of this. I just referenced an article from Anandtech - https://www.anandtech.com/show/17123/tsmc-unveils-n4x-node-high-voltages-for-high-clocks - which will allow for higher performance that will still never consume the power that even Intel’s desktop CPUs consume. Apple is still going to use less power, but it’s going to need to be a bit more than any current CPUs they currently have released to give Pros what they want and need. Don’t move the football just yet.

Not sure what you mean.

This will be a Mac Pro with Ice Lake-W.
if it really is ice lake and possibly the last intel mac, it would kinda suck because it is already a generation behind with ddr4 memory and pcie4. these things don't really matter now, but it'll hurt it's super long term life. i know some people today still use the old cheese grater mac pro from 2011. had those mac pros been pcie3, it would hold up better today

I know lots a “pros” getting great results out of the new MBP offerings.

This is so stupid. Prolongs fragmentation in the ecosystem.
It’s not stupid to the Pro user that simply cannot move to Apple Silicon the way the average consumer can. Longer update cycles and developers dragging their asses (Avid, Universal Audio, et al.) mean that another Intel revision would be a welcome gift to those who invested in a five-figure Mac.

Neither is Rocket Lake and works perfectly fine. Alder Lake is already working too, so your point is moot.

No. Until an Apple Silicon based Mac comes out that bests the highest end Intel Mac or Intel CPU in general (when comparing apples to apples), then you could reconsider. What M1 based Mac performs as fast as a 11900K processor? Or 12900k? Is there an M1 based mac that can beat a 6900 XT? Or 6800 XT? Or even 6800?

Intel’s Enterprise is always behind consumers because Enterprise is more
conservative, has more legacy, longer upgrade cycles and predictable depreciation schedules.

We can agree on this. Certain devs are indeed dragging their asses. Avid and UA are two of the worst. Then there’s also iZotope and NI. These companies tend to blame Pace and the lack of native iLok support though. You know, that blame game devs use. Finger pointing.

for the people talking about hackintosh, i have to assume that the 10900k + 6900 XT is your best bet for best compatibility for the years to come.

I get the feeling that if Apple intended to release any additional new Intel-based Macs, they’d have done so before the end of this year. Perhaps they intended on doing one more Intel-based Mac Pro refresh in January 2021 when the report from which this article stems was published but opted to cancel it.

Releasing an Intel-based Mac Pro refresh too close to the Apple silicon-based redesign, especially if the former remains available for purchase after the latter is announced, might read as a lack of confidence in the latter.
Yeah, I agree. I’m willing to be proven wrong, but releasing anything more than a spec-bumped Intel Mac at this late date feels like an admission of inferiority…and extremely in-Apple
I think any new Intel chips are more an indication of developers who are laggards and late to the Apple Silicon party. With M1/M2, Apple is on the their own release cycle so there is no reason they couldn't release one new Mac Pro model featuring Intel and another model featuring Apple Silicon at the same time. Either way, Apple gets the sale and they also get to compare both models to each other in order too embarrass Intel and further pressure their own customers to switch to Apple Silicon.
As I said, I’m willing to be proven wrong. Your point about software is certainly valid.

This news, while it makes sense, is kind of a bummer. I see a bright future with Apple chips and want to move to that as quick as we can. Will they also upgrade the high end Mac Mini with new Intel? My hypothetical Mac Mini Pro with M1Max or M2 and 32GB of RAM might have to stay a dream for now.

Isotope and Native Instruments would call it “maximizing revenues from the legacy platform to help capitalize on opportunities for growth with Apple’s exciting new hardware.” I think most of us call it double-dipping on a captive audience who depend on your software for their livelihood whilst wanting to tell you to f*ck off because the version updates alone are designed to extract maximum revenue per user while giving the absolute least value for their dollar, but I digress.

I wish it wasn't limited to the high-end Mac Pro. I wouldn't mind an updated iMac.
at this point, i don't think it's worth apple's time and money to bring support to alder lake. it's not THAT much better than comet lake. as for your GPU, you can still use external GPUs i think

I fully agree again. We’d be good friends. ?
