OK - I am new to the world of OSX. I will be buying my first Mac next week (as long as they launch new Macs) and I need to run Internet Explorer for a single webapp.

I was going to get either VMWare Fusion or Parallels anyway. Is it likely that I will just need to buy a updated copy to use with Mountain Lion?

I bought it myself for Parallels, Screenflow and Jaksta.

The others are just fluff. But still well worth the $49.

KeyCue will be good, as it's 'free' to help me learn shortcuts (wouldn't pay for it, but free - it's nice). I'll probably spend a few evenings with Civilization V, and install Living Desktop to see if that's good, or uses too much processor power.

And for those thinking about Parallels... Yes - you need a copy of Windows to run it.

Does that Busycal idd come free with this package?

Still 2000 sells to go before it hits 10K, but I just wanted to make sure. Busycal is an excellent OSX calendar and free is a very decent price :D

I'll probably pick that up later today. Finally, a good bundle. Also, I have NONE of those pieces of software.

Parallels vs Virtual Box

I use Virtual Box now. Does Parallels have an option to import from a VirtualBox space?

And is Parallels better than Virtual Box?
Thanks

"A Better Finder Rename" rocks!

As a professional photographer I used to use my own Applescript to rename my photos, but it was slow. I shifted over to ABFR back in 2003, and it is one of the best utilities I've ever experienced on the Mac, for production.

Just used it last week to append extensions to 2000 incorrectly named audio files sent to me.

I might, just for parallels and civ. a few others I might use once in a while, but those two are the selling points for me.

Well, crap, I bought Parallels on sale for $60 a while ago. Now I could get that and Civ 5 for less.

The rest seems to be the usual assortment of software that seems grotesquely overpriced for what it does when compared to free alternatives.

If its hasn't been 30 days from when you bought Parallels, you can contact them and get a refund for it

There is no Skyrim for Mac, wrapped in WINE or otherwise. You'd have to get the Windows version and do your own wrapping.

The Porting Team provides one, but it's unofficial. Anyway, I tried it, and it works well.

Hey everyone -- Misha from MacUpdate here. I wanted to answer some questions; feel free to ask any others you have. We're here to help (and provide awesome deals!).

Will they all work with Mountain Lion?

Yes, we expect all the apps to work with 10.8. For more answers, check out the Bundle FAQ.

I'm interested. Can we pay in sterling? And how much is it in sterling?

Worldwide orders are welcome! The price is in USD but you can order it from anywhere in the world. You'll be responsible for any foreign currency conversion fees PayPal or your credit card charges; there is no "localized" pricing for foreign countries/currency.

Will they all work in Leopard?

Only a few apps are compatible with 10.5; please refer to the Bundle FAQ for specifics.

Some apps have older versions that are compatible that you're entitled to use (Espionage 2, A Better Finder Rename 8).

I bought one of these bundles years ago and found out the hard way that I received special versions that were not upgradeable, so the value claims were misleading. I didn't get product X for less, I got a crippled version of product X for less. Big difference. To be fair, I don't know if they still do this, but that soured me on those so-called "deals."

You must not have bought a MacUpdate bundle. Our bundles always include the same complete versions as if you paid full price, and our contracts with our partners stipulate that.

Not on MAS? No thanks.

It's impossible to offer these deals on MAS since Apple controls the keys to that kingdom. Also, not all titles are on MAS (Parallels, notably).

You're welcome to pay $99.99 for ScreenFlow 3 on MAS + $39.99 for Civ V + full price for any other titles on MAS.

If I download this bundle on my MacBook can I also use it on my iMac and pay $49.99 just once?

Yes. Your purchase is not locked to the computer your buy it with it. You can also buy now and download the apps in 2 months (or 2 years). We don't impose a time limit on providing the bundle download and you can always re-download it in the future.

One question: do I need an Apple account to buy this? I don't yet have an iMac (hopefully soon...), but I can't let this opportunity pass me by.

No Apple account needed. Just a MacUpdate account (free).

Each app in the package is downloaded individually.

We also provide a single bundle DMG for your convenience. It's about 500MB.

Civ V must be downloaded via Steam (Steam is a tiny download; Civ V is about 2GB, though).

Parallels causes kernel panics and other problems.

As others have pointed out, this isn't the case. If you are having issues with Parallels, contact Parallels support.

$50 upgrade to Parallels Desktop 8 incoming soon (and probably mandatory to use with Mountain Lion).

Parallels 7 is compatible with the 10.8 developer previews; we expect it to remain compatible with the final version. Lion was a dramatic departure from previous OS X releases, hence some earlier versions of Parallels not working properly with it (Parallels 6 does, though).

Basically a give-away in this bundle...has Parallels finally realized that VMWare owns the virtual machine market? Is this their versions of throwing in the towel and saying 'no mas, no mas'?

Parallels actually commands a massive marketshare lead over VMware Fusion (we're talking only about the Mac space, obviously). We ran another $49.99 bundle earlier this year with Fusion and were surprised how many people wanted Parallels instead... so we made that happen :)

Are you sure Parallels is not as good as VMWare?

They're frankly both good solutions. Parallels performs a little better (speed-wise) and is better for games.

Ugh, too bad I'm wanting Fusion as Civ 5 would of been a very very welcome bonus. And the screen casting software thrown in is also good.

I've been using Parallels for the past 3 or 4 years, including version 7 and I've never had any related kernel panics.

Agreed. Been pretty solid running various Windows and Linux OSs. Only thing to watch is that they seem to like to release new versions before they're ready so don't be too eager to upgrade before the fixes have been applied and the dust settles.

For games you can't beat Parallels.

Parallels is great for most things but CrossOver http://www.codeweavers.com/ is slicker for games that it supports.

I've got the majority of these apps, but if you haven't its certainly a great deal - Speed Downloader, Parallels 7 and Screen Flow certainly stand out.

The bundle at http://www.productivemacs.com/ is a great bundle.

Agreed. The productivemacs bundle has some very nice stuff; I use MacJournal every day and would be lost without it. It all depends what applications you already own though.

Does anyone know if Civ V just comes with a normal STEAM key that I can email to a friend to activate on STEAM?

Yes, it is just a standard Steam key -- redeemable by any Steam account.

I should add this gets you access to both the Mac & Windows versions.

Civ 5 on Macbook Air?

Does anyone know if Civ 5 is actually playable on a 2010 gen Macbook Air (4GB ram) and/or an iMac 2009 gen with 3.06ghz C2D (12GB ram)? I'd heard mixed things about how much of a hog that game is and I wonder if I need more muscle in my machines.

Personally I think it will struggle with those setups. It is a big of a resource hog.

Many MR users report exactly this problem: Kernel panics with Parallels 7. All versions of Parallels cause kernel panics, sooner or later. For other criticism visit:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21252/parallels-desktop

Sure, other VM solutions have other problems, but they do not cause kernel panics on the host machine. And regarding "Parallels support", that was a good joke. They are known for the worst customer support in the industry.

Because SOME people report kernel panics, does not mean that 'All versions of Parallels cause kernel panics, sooner or later'. That is just FUD.

There is probably some machine(s) that cause it under the right circumstances. I've heard full-screen mode causes issues, so don't use that part if it doesn't work for you until it's fixed.

If you happen to be the person that it doesn't quite work for, you're annoyed. If you're not, it works great.

Not sure you understand what Speed Download does. But it's definitely worth the money, so don't knock it.
Speed Download has probably a "better" GUI, but not the better functionality. Most features of SD are half-baked and undocumented. Secure file sharing? LOL. Use a VPN or encrypted disk images (Mac OS X disk images or TrueCrypt disk images). Does not cost anything, documentation is available.

MacBook Air -- yes (320M video card is supported).
iMac -- depends on the video card: 9400M=no, GT120=yes, GT130=yes (GT130 isn't listed as a supported card, but it's faster than the GT120 so there's no reason it wouldn't work)

Of the above configurations, the GT130 should yield the best results. You may need to turn down graphics options for optimal gameplay, though.
