Because SOME people report kernel panics, does not mean that 'All versions of Parallels cause kernel panics, sooner or later'. That is just FUD.
Yeah. Google spreads FUD. Hundreds of MR users spread FUD. Conclusion: The users and Google are the problem, because Parallels is flawless. Sure.

There is probably some machine(s) that cause it under the right circumstances.
Strange that VMware Fusion and VirtualBox do not cause kernel panics on the same machines.

Speed Download has probably a "better" GUI, but not the better functionality. Most features of SD are half-baked and undocumented. Secure file sharing? LOL. Use a VPN or encrypted disk images (Mac OS X disk images or TrueCrypt disk images). Does not cost anything, documentation is available.

Can you support the claim that features are "half-baked and undocumented"?

Secure file sharing between Speed Download users is a niche feature, but much easier for most users than configuring a VPN or creating temporary encrypted disk images.

Many commercial apps, in general, share features with free solutions. You pay for convenience, GUI, support, additional features, etc.

You could record your screen with QuickTime rather than ScreenFlow, but you're not going to end up with the same results... You could use VirtualBox rather than Parallels, but you're missing out on a lot of features... You could write individual Automator scripts rather than using A Better Finder Rename, but it's going to take you way longer... You could use a terminal command line to play a movie on your desktop rather than My Living Desktop, but you don't get the scenes, screensaver, or other features and have to manually specify the movie to play... you could go outside and use your imagination to invent a game to play rather than playing Civ V...

In all the above examples, though, you're trading features and convenience. If none of those matter to you, or the feature set of the free alternatives is satisfactory for your needs, then certainly pass on buying apps... otherwise, this is a great way to save money on some apps (even if you don't use them all) and support the developers who make them.

I bought this for Parallels and Civ V. I had a look at the rest and the only one that seems to be worthwhile for me was KeyQue.

The other good news is that I can buy it in $ with PayPal and avoid all the excessive non-US price uplifts ( e.g. for Parallels ). Worth noting if you don't live in the US.

Many MR users report exactly this problem: Kernel panics with Parallels 7. All versions of Parallels cause kernel panics, sooner or later. For other criticism visit:
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/21252/parallels-desktop

Sure, other VM solutions have other problems, but they do not cause kernel panics on the host machine. And regarding "Parallels support", that was a good joke. They are known for the worst customer support in the industry.

VM solutions for Mac abound, but where do I find a CHEAP or FREE (non-pirated, of course) copy of Windows XP or above?

I definitely do not want to pay 100 dollars for such trash - and stores only sell Win 7 licenses for a lot more than that (full ones, not upgrade paths)...

I never said that Parallels is flawless. I said that 'All versions of Parallels cause kernel panics, sooner or later' is a false statement because there are not 100% of users experiencing kernel panics. Just because SOMEONE is, or even a large percentage of people are experiencing kernel panics does not mean that most people are.

By the way, I've seen others use Parallels with no problems and no complaints to steer me away from Parallels. I have yet to install my copy. I'll do that tonight. It might cause a kernel panic on my machine too. I don't know. If it does on my machine, I won't assume that everyone's machine does the same. If it works on my machine, I won't assume that it works for everyone either.

Strange that VMware Fusion and VirtualBox do not cause kernel panics on the same machines.

I currently have VMWare Fusion, works great on my Lion and Snow Leopard macs, but it does not work on my developer Mountain Lion box. Which is one of my reasons for trying Parallels.

I'm interested. Can we pay in sterling? And how much is it in sterling?

Get a PayPal account linked to a £ credit card - that will be your best option.

----------

Is this offer available to customers outside of the United States? Or, more specifically, the UK? The price is given in US Dollars and it's an American site therefore I'm a little sketchy... good offer though hence my interest.

Please quote me if you respond as I probably won't come back to the thread. Cheers.

Yes, get a PayPal account linked to a £ credit card.

One question: do I need an Apple account to buy this? I don't yet have an iMac (hopefully soon...), but I can't let this opportunity pass me by.

No, just a credit card.

----------

I use Virtual Box now. Does Parallels have an option to import from a VirtualBox space?

And is Parallels better than Virtual Box?
Thanks

Yes. Much snazzier in operation. Much better integration. Also possibly faster wrt Networking.

Does anyone know if Civ 5 is actually playable on a 2010 gen Macbook Air (4GB ram) and/or an iMac 2009 gen with 3.06ghz C2D (12GB ram)? I'd heard mixed things about how much of a hog that game is and I wonder if I need more muscle in my machines.

Last time I tried on my 2011 MBA to run Civ 4 or 5, it fell over due to some incompatibility with the Intel HD3000. Maybe things have improved in the last 3 months. I bought this to run on a hi spec Mini.

Well, in the video it made a point to say something to the effect of "these are not crippled versions or downgraded apps. These are the full versions which will receive updates and support just like if you had bought them normally". That right there makes me want to jump on board.

So, this isn't through the mac app store. This is through some website i'd download all the apps at once? Trying to understand. I'm a new mac user and all this is new to me. I'm never sure if i should worry about viruses or shady websites or whatever.

In the OS X ecosystem, frequently bundles of software are offered all together, like the Humble Bundles or Indie Royales do for games.

mupromo is one of the older ones that I know about (granted, I'm not an old timer) and is considered reputable. I have purchased bundles from them before and never had any issues.

*IF* you are concerned about downloading from MUPromo/MacUpdate, you can use the serial key they email you and use it with copies of the software downloaded directly from the developer sites.

If I could resell Parallels (as I already have) and Civilisation V (dont want it), that would be great

There is an extensive community of Steam trading forums you can find where you may be able to trade your key for something else.

As it would be a trade of the key, rather than a trade within Steam proper, you might have some issues with trust, etc, but you may be able to find someone.

DevonThink Pro

I'm really interested in DevonThink... Does anyone use it? have any advice?

I use it some, but I'm sure not to its full potential. I use it in conjunction with a Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500M scanner to manage my paperwork.

I tried out a few different software tools before buying DevonThink Pro, figuring that it did a lot of stuff I'd probably want to use. I've found that in the end I'm too busy to use most of it. Mostly I just use it as a glorified front end to Spotlight, typing in text I'm looking for in receipts and documents.

So, it's kind of expensive for what I've ended up using it for. That's sort of the fault of the tool, as it hasn't "drawn me in" as much as it might. However, it's more just the fact that I'm busy and have invested myself into it with the minimum amount of effort to get the minimum amount of usefulness that I require.

Going back to Osx Mountain Lion when it goes final (yeah..I install it on my PC, I love the hacking and tweaking :) ) but I admit that it's a great deal to say the least. Tempted to buy it, even when I'm not sure when I can install ML on my PC :)

I won't be buying this bundle of pain again

So far... Attachment Tamer refuses to install saying the package is corrupted, Living Desktops locked me out of my computer and I had to power-down while apps were running, and I don't want Steam on my machine so Civilization V is out. I'm afraid to try any of the others now.

Still a new ScreenFlow and Parallels is worth the price.

Great package! However I only need Screenflow, if anyone is willing to sell me their license, hit me up with PM.

Does this Civ 5 come with any of the Expansion Packs? Or is it just the basic Civ 5? Also I've tossed the idea of putting Windows on my Mac so that I can better learn Windows. Is Parallels pretty easy to use? Also does ScreenFlow 3 just record video or audio too? Thanks.

How does one PM here?

I downloaded a MacUpdate bundle earlier this year (Winter 2011). It included an app I cannot live without. TotalFinder. Tabbed finder browsing? Are you kidding me? Apple has to add this feature to the OS.

It also came with a font-pack and a cool clipboard manager. So I am pretty happy. I already run Bootcamp, so Parallels is kinda redundant.

I am glad they put out these bundles with programs that are not always available on the Appstore. I am all for supporting the smaller developers out there that have quality products!

Not better functionality compared to what? I admitted that SD has a bloated feature-set, but my endorsement was based on the features I listed which I use (related to you know, downloading files). And as a Mac user, yes I do consider a good UI and user experience important!

Also does ScreenFlow 3 just record video or audio too? Thanks.

Yep records audio too (It asks to first install a small 209KB audio driver). One of my favorite pieces of software ever. I've used it to record Skype calls, which could then be exported at different settings. I've also used it to record a flash animation once to upload to YouTube at 1080p

Been using Parallels 7 on an MBA for a while and never had any issues. No panic. Works perfectly!

Thanks!

I am still interested in Jaksta. If someone want to part with that portion of the bundle let me know and the cost.

PM or email (iphone AT eweiner DOT com)

Sorry to hear about the troubles you've encountered. Please try re-downloading the installer, we haven't had any other mentions of this issue.

Regarding My Living Desktop, I'm confused how it "locked [you] out of your desktop". Do you mean the screensaver portion did? Is there a password prompt? This very unusual, as well, but I'm sure the developer can assist you.

Last time I tried on my 2011 MBA to run Civ 4 or 5, it fell over due to some incompatibility with the Intel HD3000. Maybe things have improved in the last 3 months. I bought this to run on a hi spec Mini.

I believe there was an issue with Civ V and Intel HD3000 graphics specifically for a short while, but this was resolved through an update. I have personally run the game on my 2011 MacBook Air with the HD3000.

*IF* you are concerned about downloading from MUPromo/MacUpdate, you can use the serial key they email you and use it with copies of the software downloaded directly from the developer sites.

Rest assured the bundle DMG we put together contains the identical code you would download from the developer. MacUpdate has been supporting developers and end-users since 1996; keeping our users happy and and being good steward of the Mac community are very important to us.

----------

Does this Civ 5 come with any of the Expansion Packs?

It's the standard Civilization V game, identical to if you purchased this one direct from the developer.

But you do have the option of buying the upcoming Gods & Kings expansion pack for just $20 through us (instead of $29.99). This is an exclusive MacUpdate bundle customer discount not available elsewhere! The Gods & Kings expansion pack is the most massive expansion to date, and will be available on June 19th.

You must not have bought a MacUpdate bundle. Our bundles always include the same complete versions as if you paid full price, and our contracts with our partners stipulate that.

Thanks for the clarification, and I apologize for the misinformation. You must be correct, it was many years ago and I only have vague memories of it. If these are full upgradeable versions, what a bargain!

Extend Sale Please!

I think it would be wise for MacRumors to extend this deal since many folks(including myself) have purchased new Macs in the recent days since the Keynote and we won't be receiving them until AT LEAST next week. I'm sure they'll see a surge in bundle sales next week.
