Frankly...I couldn't care less about 90% of this. All I want is my Core Duo PowerBook with PCI-E graphics and 2GB of RAM. Oh and throw in a 100GB hard drive.

Yes Yes

The big thing that everyone seems to be forgetting is this AppleInsider report from mid-December:

http://www.appleinsider.com/article.php?id=1412

One such product described to AppleInsider is an iPod boombox "unlike anything seen in boombox world" and strikingly different from "anything Apple has released in the past."

This was posted on MR ( https://www.macrumors.com/pages/2005/12/20051212210230.shtml ), but no one's really heard anything about it since the AI report. And AppleInsider isn't some crock site; they're usually quite accurate. We should anticipate the possibility of something crazy thing like this.

I hope they dont release a boombox. What is this, 1980 and the time of having a boombox on our shoulders listening to "Dont push me 'cos I'm close to the e-edge" heheh.

I think we'll see a portable for sure.

Ah, good memories.

Apple is rumored to come out with set-top MP3 player for the livingroom, I believe.

Here's to the Crazy Ones

I want ten. Could you imagine the prices that nine of them would get on eBay right now?

You know you are a Macniatic when...

You schedule your spring courses so you get Tuesdays free to watch Steve Keynotes... :p

Has anyone heard anything about OS X? Will they be previewing 10.5 this time around?

I think the keynote might be too busy for an OS X update. Bring on the Intel Portables. (I have been waiting too long for a powerbook g5)

I'd say there is a 10% chance at this point. The Keynote is going to be so freaking loaded as is....crap it might have to span 2 days there is so much to go over. Honestly Steve O needs to ditch the huge iPod speal about how iPod sales are great, how Tiger is the worlds greatest OS and just move onto the good stuff. Frankly Leopard is at least a year out. WWDC will prob usher in the first glimpse of 10.5 and God is it going to be BIG.

Okay, beating a dead horse...

With Macworld San Francisco (MWSF) quickly approaching,... MacRumors provides this Rumor Roundup as a summary of major rumors circulating around the Mac Web...

Intel Macs

... There has since been a flurry of disjointed rumors about various Intel Mac models appearing in January... Amongst them, however, ThinkSecret appeared most confident with a report from "reliable sources" that Apple is planning on introducing both Intel iBooks and Mac minis at MWSF 2006.

... the Mac mini is expected to evolve into a digital media hub with support for DVR, an iPod Dock as well as an updated Front Row media application. We've also received hints that Apple is planning on adopting Intel's Viiv platform...
Wasn't the original charm of the mini that it was so small and cheap (for a Mac)? If people want Apple to "evolve" it into a DVR media hub, I assume they're talking about HD, a TV tuner, and "Front Row 2.0" to manage it all. Well, for HD we're talking h264, which needs mega disk space, fast read-write speeds, a powerful CPU/GPU combo, et al... I imagine that leaves out the T1300 single-core and the T2300 dual-core, possibly even the T2400 dual-core...

Then add a mid-line PCI-Exp. x16 GPU with at least 128MB of fast DDR2, if not a top-line model with 256MB of DDR3 VRAM... And you'll want to start with at least 1.5GB of fast DDR2 RAM... Then you need to ditch that 4200rpm 2.5" hard drive; (best) replacing it with a SATA 7200rpm in the 160-250GB range (if not 500GB at 10,000rpm)... And if you want to try streaming your hi-def content around your home better count on at least 802.11n - Napa has an option for UWB and/or WiMax... Oh, and even with Yonah's power-management advances, you'll still want to make sure you cool down that case with some fans (Apple hates noise in a product designed not to)...

Let's see now, I think we've just eliminated one of Microsoft's headaches from this past year: the "how did they do that?" design and pricepoint that was the Mac mini... Because now you've got something that's twice the size (3x?) and at least twice the price... And what have you accomplished?

Apple won't add all that to the mini, not as a replacement for it. They may very well use the compact & elegant design of the mini as a starting point for an Apple DVR media hub, but I seriously doubt it would say "mini" anywhere in the name or description. Also, according to DigiTimes (I know, who can trust them) Intel's Viiv will have an average price of between $1,500-1,800 for a system - which puts it more into the iMac range (the "iSight" iMac was a test bed of sorts).

So I can see an iMac using Viiv with Centrino T2600 (dual-core 2.16GHz + 945 GM chipset + 3945ABG PRO/Wireless). Who knows, Apple could even put the iMac's guts into a 23" ACD-HD or 30" ACD-HD, or make a "headless" model.

Regardless, I think there will be a bunch of people left scratching their heads next week, wondering "how'd Apple manage to squeeze all that into that at that price"... Conversely - and I think more realistically - there will be a bunch of people left licking their wounds and bemoaning the fact that "Apple couldn't manage to squeeze all that into that at that price"...

I've been wondering about that, too. When did they preview the last few updates? I can't remember if there is a certain expo when they generally do it.

You and me both. My checkcard is just itching for Apple to plunder it. You can almost here it speak when you hold it up to your ear
*tiny voice* Take me baby. Take me.

I am such a Mac slut right now.

WWDC...the thing is "the transition" is doubtless top priority at Apple. My guess is that they have something special planned with the .5 release of OS X. Something that may not see the light of day until Summer 2007. Just a guess though.

that article was really suprising. i had no idea that much work goes into those things. makes me feel guilty about knowing it all before he says it..

i have honestly tried to quit mr before, but it's magical knowledge keeps drawing me back in..

Okies. We all know apple has fed a few false things to some rumour sites, an example I believe is the rumour of an intel iMac in MWSF. Not likely. Fractionally more likely than a PM, but unlikely nevertheless. There seem to be too many iBook rumours around for it to be true. Anyways.. The Chances round-up:
Intel Powermac: 0.5-1/10 (Anything is still possible.)
Intel iMac: 2/10 (It got a generous update.)
Intel iBook: 6/10 (Update wouldn't hurt, though I believe it will be alongside powerbook, if anything.)
Intel Mac Mini: 7/10 (These have been updated a million times, but it does make sense to launch one.)
Intel Powerbook: 8/10 (It's dry and stale, needing an update. Seems like it is seeing it hasn't been rumoured all over the place. It has a few rumours and also the factor of apple being quiet about it.)
Something being done to/with iPod Shuffle: 9/10
iWork '06: 9/10
iLife '06: 9.99/10
They are all pure estimates, but they make sense to me :)

i hope this is all true!!! still debating between an intel Mac Mini and use my current Powerbook for portability or get a iBook, well if they come out at the same time i can compare both!!!
those of you complaining about having to go to school i am going away for a week starting tommorow with no internet access, i get back on the 14th! ill get back being 4 days behind in the Mactel world!!!! AAAAARRRRGGGGHHHHH

powerbooks

i imagine them to be thinner in the way the new ipods are thinner. kind of like the titaniums, available in black, ibooks in white. both look almost identical save for the specs and the screen size. ultra thin. kind of hard corners. oled backlit keyboards, like the razr. DVR, and higher res. screen. im drooling

My Prediction

I was laughed at when I said a couple of years ago that Apple would split off iPod (they proceeded to split into divisions). This time they may go all the way - it's gonna happen, it's a matter of time.

I would love an update to Keynote!!!!!
