There will be PowerBooks! Either that or there will be no Core Duo processors available for Mac products at MWSF.

Yes but setting my expectations low guarantees that I don't go on a wild killing spree in our office after Steve's keynote if there isn't a PowerBook update. :D

hmmm, if you take a look at inventory at www.smalldog.com you will notice they only have one (yes, 1) low end 15 inch powerbook in stock, one 17 inch, and a total of 5 ibooks. it's been that way for a while. i don't know about you folks but if i were tracking inventory for one of apple's biggest online resellers i'd try to have more new product on hand unless i was expecting a serious update soon.

Anyone know the wait period on Apple's site for 15" PowerBooks? *goes and looks*

Ships within 24 hours. . . :( Then again the iBooks are the same. . . 24 hours.

Whoever posted that pic of Michael Dell showing his new laptops off at CES and asking "is this the new iBook?" I hope you were joking..

Jobs would NEVER..I mean NEVER allow ANYBODY to show one of Apple's new laptops off at the CES BEFORE MWSF..

End of story..
It does look like Dell is trying to emulate Apple tho..

As for the iHome...That rumor/phony pic has been around sincd when ? the Cube?

By the wait, the entry missed some info about Leopard, IMO it's very possible that we will get the first sneak peek during the speech.

Discussion of Leopard makes a good entre to Apple's near-term plans. Steve Jobs likes to recap and look ahead, put the products in context with where the market has been and how the updates are the latest and greatest.

Maybe something along the lines of:

hardware: Mactel, it will actually cook your breakfast, etc. Leopard will rock your world; it's made for Mactel. The first one will be on sale in February, we're ahead of schedule, more fun this summer, etc.

iLife: Apple is pushing further into using the Internet as a tool for communicating ideas, images, video, etc., so here's iWeb. Same for Garage Band/podcasts. A brand new .mac that doesn't suck.

iPod: The nano, iPod video. Today the new shuffle. And the boombox or whatever.

iTunes: It's been a great year. We've completely knocked every competitor out of this category, and it's still getting better. TV shows. We're announcing today more content, blah blah blah.

one more thing: Probably something or things media related. Feature films, the Seinfeld catalog, Oprah would all be big but maybe not one-more-thing-worthy. The Beatles would be enormous, particularly with lots of multi-media stuff, documentaries, etc.

PErsonally, I think you probably won't see powerbooks at mac world. They will come a little bit later with core duo higher powered yonahs. At mac world you will see new ibooks with low voltage core duo yonahs (about 1.5 ghz).

You haven't messed with a mini apparently. I was in a print shop trying to print some over size full color pdfs. The brand new Dell ran dog slow, not to mention the prints kept coming out off center - and this was by the guy who ran the print shop.

I would say give the mini a try.

It wasn't setup right then. *shrugs*

iBooks and Mac Mini's: processor speeds and PRICE DROPS!

New iBooks and Mac Mini's make sense. As for when Intel Powerbooks are announced, I think that depends on which speed chip Apple uses for the iBook. If Apple uses the single core 1.5 Yonah, then I think Powerbooks will soon follow with the 1.66/1.83/2.0 dual core Yonahs. But I, for one, sure hope Apple uses the dual cores in the iBook/Mini so that they will wait 4-5 months when Intel has the faster Merom mobile processor ready. Hopefully THIS SENTENCE hints to dual cores in the iBook: It is rumored that both single and dual core versions of the processor [Yonah] will be made available, although the single core version may not be available until later in the quarter.

I have read the speculation that Apple may drop the low end iBook price by $200 when the Intels ship. What will that do to pricing of the old iBooks? If I can get a brand new base iBook (currently shipping) for $599, I may go that route instead of jump in to the land of Intel uncertaintly/incompatibility/possible slower performance with Rosetta. The 32MB VRAM is kind of a bummer, though.

Personally i am in the same situation as you sound to be in. If the new ibooks cost around 800-900$ (hopefully) i will wait a few weeks to see if any big issues arise. If I notice any issues I will pick up an older g4 at hopefully a reasonable price. Still i would rather go the way of a 64 bit chip as opposed to a 32 but chip.

The larger iMac/iHome machines could be very interesting to say the least, however, I doubt it due to the price points mentioned (not that they are only determining factor) I have been looking at TVs lately, and purchasing anything with a 42" screen alone is going to cost around 2000-2500, nevermind with a $1500 iMac built into it.

I just want a new Powerbook, running XP when I need to!

That's what im wondering too........ lots of Win PC companies have annouced hardware with these new dual core Intel chips, why couldn't Apple? But since it seems a little too pricey for iBooks why not Powerbooks?

the price differemce between single and duo core is not huge so i would not be surprised to see a dual core yonah in a low end ibook.

Apple is dropping 64-bit chips

The G4 isn't 64-bit, and the Yonah isn't 64-bit.

Apple's OSx86 plans are 32-bit only (as far as developers have been told). 64-bit was good marketing hype in 2003, but....

So, what do you mean - that you're still waiting for a PowerBook G5 ?? ;)

you are correct. i must have mispoke. I am waiting for the yonahs which will supposedly be faster than the g4 ibooks. we shall se what happens.

then you have the All-in-One problem

Then you have the problem that to replace or upgrade either the screen or the media center, you have to pay for both.

An Apple-branded big plasma panel with a separate MC in a home DVD player format makes more sense, like:

(click here to go to HP product page)

(Basically a MiniMacintel system, but stretched to accomodate a couple of 3.5" disks, DVD, more ports, video tuner/capture - and air flow space to allow fanless convection cooling.)

Well, I am really looking forward to MWSF.

Haven't been feeling too good lately, but the forums here are keeping me smiling.

I too would be really surprised to see a Intel based PowerBook, but am pretty certain the iBook will be launched, widescreen, etc. I just hope that they increase the overall spec a little, like SD standard across the range, and up the graphics to at least 64Mb.

Funny, made me chuckle reading about people with their credit cards ready, as I too paid a chunk off mine to be ready and order.

I am a pro user, but use a PowerBook at present, mainly for internet, email, and enjoying the Mac Life. So would happily change this to an iNtel iBook as an intro machine to the new chip. At least this way, when PowerBooks make the transition, I would have built up some software and utilities that run native on my new iBook.

I also think we will see iLife'06 and although the Shuffle does not interest me personally, I think we will see a minor update by way of capacity and maybe remote control features.

Can't wait :)

I would be very supprised if this happened. Core Duo is the best of the best for portables right now. So which lineup deserves it?

Windows laptops that are shipping with Core Duo have been reporting on average 1/2 hour longer battery life, and 30% more computing power then previous Pentium M versions. You can't beat that.

Apple has Logic for midi and sequencing.

What I want to see is Apple's answer to ProTools for analog tracking
and editing with seamless Logic integration, but with a MUCH more
user friendly interface.

I would love to see iLife '06 with ProBand.

Somebody needs to put Digidesign out to pasture.

64-bit is not marketing hype, it will be the norm in the next 5 years. Merom is slated to be 64-bit, software will just have to play catch-up.

Developers have been told this because the first generation of intel for mac will still be 32-bit. Just wait until next year, Intel's road map is heading towards 64-bit processing.

In the near future intel is supposed to come out with 2 new things that could be in the powerbooks. A more powerful version of yonah (almost 2ghz) and a new chip codename merom which is also supposed to be even more powerful and a cooler chip than the yonah.

It's been a little TOO quite this year in the Rumor Mills.... It actually has me a bit concerned.

Are we heading for one of those boring MacWorlds when all they did was give one of the lines a minor speed boost and they were showing one of the OS' in preproduction?

This year it could be something as insignificant as "Oooh look at how Leopard will look and act just like Tiger in 2007." or "Hey everyone, here is our Roadmap for the Intel releases starting in October with the Mac mini and iBooks..." as well as the stand by, "iLife 06 now lets you create your own websites with iWeb more easily while integrating our other great products such as iPhoto, iMovie and iTunes into your web page design. It's just that easy".

Come to think of it that is exactly how Steve is going to introduce iWeb. I'm really hoping for iBooks and minis.

Has anyone else noticed that the Apple Store has not given its traditional pushed out dates on ANYTHING this week. That is the core reason for my worries unless Apple has wisened up over the years and realized that the faithful look to those "signs" for the next coming.

That "near future" is 6 and 12 months away respectivly. 6 months is also the time that Core Solo a.k.a. the new iBooks will be arriving. :p

The higher powered yonah chips are supposed to come out according to intel in a month or two. YOu won't see powerbooks until then. The ibooks will get the low voltage less powerful version of yonah's duo which was just released.

I think he means delays in shipping - indicating replacements for current orders shipped after keynote - It has been true at times in the past - only thing with delayed shipping currently is 1GB shuffle - if that is the only thing updated I will crap.

[Edit] Actually it is 1-2 business days now, was more before - I feel better :) Unless they don't update ANYTHING - Steve will walk out on stage and just do a little dance for an hour or so
