Too much effort for a small market. The global GSM and 3G market vastly exceeds the numbers they could serve by making a CDMA phone.

It doesn't matter that so many poor countries use GSM, if they aren't buying the phone. Apple is missing out on huge sales in the USA in comparison.

Take last quarter (July-Sept). Five million iPhones actually sold (not just shipped as inventory) worldwide, with about half of those in the USA. IIRC, about 2.4 million phones sold by ATT. Correct me if I misremember.

Now consider if it was on Verizon as well. Very easily another 2.5 million phones sold last quarter, wouldn't you agree? Verizon could become ONE THIRD of worldwide sales. That would not be considered a small market. Especially since Verizon has the largest 3G network in the USA by area.

Not enough to justify the costs. China and Russia are where the next big market push will be.

Apple still have an exclusivity contract with AT&T in the US so that rules out any form of CDMA iPhone for the time being.

It's just too small a market to worry about.

Yes enough to justify the costs. It will be easier for Apple to make a CDMA version of the phone and put it on at least Verizon's or Sprint's network than to go into contract negotiations with cell phone providers in 3rd world countries. And Apple would make more money faster since Sprint would do anything to get any phone especially an iPhone, and VZW still has the largest network, and it's network blows AT&T's out of the water in terms of speed.

We know about the exclusivity, it's more of a hypothetical thing.

Verizon doesn't have 3G. They borrowed that term since GSM coined it for all of their networks. Idiots around the US don't know much about cell phones and that's why them and Sprint have decided to claim the same thing the GSM carriers say. I HATE hearing Verizon and Sprint say they have 3G. Not to mention I HATE both Verizon and Sprint anyway.

But if they had sold the phone to all of the carriers they would have sold many more than they currently have. But all carriers try to have an exclusive phone to drive sales. So it's moot.

The new iMac really isn't different from the G5 iMac in terms of design. All that really changed was the chassis materials and the internals. Therefore, the design from 2004 is still going strong.

Actually having them side by side from a g5 imac to the first intel version imac to the latest there are a lot of differences. Placement of usbs, thickness, and screen are the really noticeable features.

Odd I always thought 3G just meant third generation cellular technology. So UTMS tech (which includes HSDPA) and CDMA2000 (which includes EVDO) are all 3G. Technically you don't have to be apart of GSM to have 3G tech at all. Note how GSM doesn't exist in Japan, yet HSDPA (well and FOMA) does.

Take a breath and realize that you are both loud and wrong on all fronts. I don't know what they teach you in your country, but 3G isn't GSM standardized word. It's 3rd Generation of wireless tech as others have said.

You may hate Sprint and Verizon, but they had 3G speeds two years ago, and both are still faster than AT&t's network. Some (probably over zealous) reviews have called Sprint's EVDO 3.5G in certain heavily populated areas.

WiMax is the 4th Generation and Sprint's been rolling it out in the Delmarva area for months now. WiFi like speeds on your cell phone does sound nice to me, no matter what it's called.

Either way, there isn't really a world war of whose network should be called what or which one is better in which country.

This is what I want to see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DqBcBea0IHE

I put this video together for a Product Management class.

Very good project. I hope you got an "A"

This video is why Matt Groening makes fun of Apple people though.

Im really hoping for a new imac. I am soooo close to buying one, but want to hold off and see what happens.

Say a new imac is unveiled at Macworld, how long usually, until they are available in stores or rather online?

Same here since I'm really bummed out having to use a 500MHz P3 and 3GB HDD at the moment while waiting :(

Revised Mini

I think it is inevitable that we will see something on the Mini front. I can't see any clues in the usual places as to whether it will be a replacement or a revision. For me a Mini like device would be a better living room machine than :apple:TV.

Front Row + DVR software + DVD / Blu Ray drive = Sale!

Some sort of iPhone like tablet that could be used as a remote trackpad and keyboard with the mini would be nice as well if you're not too busy Steve!

iphone

Has anyone been given a good answer on why we have to jailbreak our iphones to get the camera to capture video?

And why haven't we seen voice turn-by-turn direction GPS navigation yet? What's the latest on the rumor Tom-Tom was working on an iphone app?

And what about the long anticipated copy and paste feature? There's been several times where I've had to actually write something down on paper from one screen and bring up another and type it in...

I hope MacWorld offers some breakthroughs here.

Question for someone with macworld experience:
If a 32gb Iphone is announced at macworld, when would the release date probably be? When apple announces a new product does the release date usually follow shortly after? Or could it be as long as Summer? How has apple acted in the past when announcing a new/udpated product? Thanks!
