The "life is random" photo's are interesting. I don't speak Italian and google's translation was pretty bad, but I'm wondering why a 1GB iPod would be advertised as "240 songs", instead of 250, when the 4GB iPod mini is "1000 songs". All I can think of is maybe as you get smaller in size the space taken by the firmware is a relatively larger percentage of the available space?

Life Is Random - 1Gb iPod

For those of you (like me) whose Italian is a little rusty, I'd suggest this Google-translated version. Basically, the article says that aside from the photos, it was also discovered that the banner says "240 songs" (which suggests 1Gb capacity for a new flash-based iPod) and that the unit on the banner is silver (other colours too?) with a vertical form-factor. Exciting stuff!

wow, good find.

"Life is random" - what on earth could that mean? This could be one of those products no one saw coming...

The solid green and black display indicated that it's definitely an iPod ad. So what could it mean? My wild guess is a radio equipped iPod... After all, when you listen to the radio, you're listening to a random selection of music.

I think "Life is random" suggests the new 1Gb iPod selects 240 songs at random from your iTunes library every time you connect it to your computer. Makes sense as most people have a lot more than 240 songs on their computer. I would guess there is a manual playlist-like drag-and-drop option as well.
I agree with crakly - excellent find gdj!
I also believe that the slogan represents a new flash memory-based iPod model.

Flash "Ipod Mini" and Q88 - 2 rumors that go together!

Flash "Ipod Mini" and Q88 - 2 rumors that go together!

Here we have an "Ipod" for the masses : 149$ makes a nice entry point for alot of people. 250 songs is definitely a 2 days worth, and how many people are really away from home more than that? I know something like that would work great for me. I have had a 2nd gen Ipod, and honestly only used 1/2 its capacity at best, and listened to 10% of the loaded songs 90% of the time....

Now add a 500$ Apple Q88 : You have a 650$ package to sell a customer, as cheap as or cheaper than many PC's from competitors, with an IPOD!

Look at the tie ins, package sales, promotions that are possible! The millions of people coming in to buy an Ipod could be switched much easier with a package like that than the current lineup!

I think those 2 rumors are the big meat of the show, and when shown together will make a package thats hard to beat in the pc world on just about every level (raw performance aside)

I thought the speech was on Monday.(

I thought that Steve's Keynote speech was going to be on Monday. God, now I have to wait a whole extra day.(

Dual-Core powerbooks!!!!

It's obvious.

unfortunately, it isn't. Freescale expects the 8641 and 8641D to ship sometime in fall/winter 2005. I doubt Apple will leave the 'Books until then. We will see yet another round of lukewarm Powerbooks end of jan/beginning of feb.

All hail the 1.4, 1.5, 1.6Ghz Powerbook G4 :/

MacWorld have this item in their news now. http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/index.cfm?home&NewsID=10565

The journaists mentioned in the article have seen the device and describe it this way:

"It is without any screen, small, with a shape more vertical than the other iPods. The colour is white, and it seems like a small remote control that fits confortably in a single hand "

Without a screen?....life is random ads?....... perhaps this implys you have no way of controlling which songs are played?.... I really hope not, i'd be very dissapointed if that were true and certainly wouldn't consider getting one.

Does anyone get the meaning of this passage in the Italian text?
The banner you see it in the photographic sequence that we have been able to carry out from the road, to the open, public ground, unfortunately to the inner made photos have due, we also say therefore, to renounce not of our spontaneous will, to photo by now already taken.
It seems that they had taken more photos but were somehow not able to carry them out of the place... Isn't there perhaps a native Italian speaker in these forums who can cook up a solid translation?

Furthermore, the Black parts of the poster kind of look like big black arrows to me.

New iPod remotes?

I don't know ... an iPod with no screen?

Track information is a big deal, a huge deal. Loosing that is like taking a step back. However, if this is purely for sports use, then I can understand as it will 90% on the time not be in the users' hands. Therefore a shuffle feature may be seen as the primary playback setting. Apple made a big deal of adding the shuffle item to the top menu in its newest iPods (4G). "Life is random."

But I still see no screen not making sense. I am going to assume, and might be wrong - Apple will release a new earbud/remote set to replace the one they currently offer. It will have a small screen, and controls like the current remote. I believe Apple no longer includes remotes free of charge with any iPod model (they use to upto and including 3G iPods). I am going to guess this new remote will work with all iPods (4G at least)? Having this as an extra accessory gives Apple something else to charge for, and keeps the cost of both the current iPods, and especially this new iPod (flash) low.

Any ideas?

I don't think so. The folks at Apple are surely smart enough to understand that the iPod experience is very much about control, i.e. finding what you want to listen to right now in a fast and convenient way. The random shuffle option is a nice extra but not more than that, so I absolutely can't imagine them trying to sell a new line of iPods based on that single merit alone.

I rather think (and hope) that "Life Is Random" – as another poster already said – alludes to the Spotlight search functions in Tiger.

Is GoBe going to be Mac only?

If the gobe team are the source of iWorks this is a reversal of how M$ stole the AppleWorks development team twice. So will the Windows version of GoProduction be canned? It is already in version 3 so I assume it is reasonably mature.

Not that I particularly care as long as we long suffering AppleWorks users get some relief from the bugs and half finished features in AW. Any upgrade paths for AW users?

More important is if Apple is going to change tactics and produce ongoing improvements to its breakthough proiducts or just make a big splash before shifting its 3 minute attention span elsewhere.

I dunno, sounds pretty possible to me!

A 1gb stick of songs, that just randomly plays.... Could be a pita, but thinking of using it in a workout type setting, it would not be terribly bad, I mean, I just hit play and workout a good 2 hours between cardio and weights every night, without really fooling with it.

So I guess in that situation it would be liveable.

Especially if its highly pocketable.

Bill

PS, bring on the Q88! I need something to load songs on my new Ipod Micro Screenless!

Life is Random

If the new iPod Flash didn't have a screen, I don't think that I would mine. No screen just meens a much longer battery life. Also, I think that the gym-goers and runners really wouldn't spend the time to find a specific song. Either way, I will likely sell my iPod Mini when this becomes available.

Is there any way to a site that text messages updates to the cell phone that happened during MacWorld tomm? I'll be in school and will be wondering whats going on :)

I can't see the PB's being upgraded much, because from a marketing sense only G5 will do - hence Power, and the size of the iMac indicates how hard it would be to fit a PB with a G5, even the 17" model.*

I can see no disadvantages in the headless Mac, as it would conquer the only territory they don't already have - cheap PC's such as Tiny/Time/Dell. My mum would buy one. I also think they would be less than $500/£300, as that is the right entry point - Conceivably this may not incude a keyboard/mouse, since most PC users would have one... most certain of the rumours IMHO.

I think the flash iPod is a bit weird, because at least in England everyone seems to shun the small flash ones except people who don't know better, and these guys won't buy an ipod Flash because they can get a PC World special for cheaper. - Would be suprised but not massively if this came out.

As for phones - This would be a market where there is a great product already, (Nokia, closely followed by SE), and Apple would struggle to differentiate their product enough, making it a high risk strategy - I reckon they would licence some bits out to Motorola or some such instead...

Just my ideas.

* I may be swayed because I got a PB in november and would be gutted if they upgraded them already, And from a customer satisfaction view, they were last upgraded in April (?) and so less than a year between upgrades would piss off the people who waited for the bugs to be worked out, such as me.
