PowerBooks

I don't know about you guys, but I've heard from 2 rumor sites that a 1.7 or 1.8 GHz G4 PowerBook will be released on or near MWSF.

Can anyone else corroborate this rumor?

Everything else seems like a snooze fest. I'm really only interested in PowerBook, PowerMac, and OS X updates, though... 🙂

EDIT: Check that-- it's confirmed. NEW POWERBOOKS: http://www.thinksecret.com/news/0501expo5.html

Okay, i know what's coming, all the suing by Apple, all the rumors of a headless imac, etc etc can mean only one thing. Apple is playing misdirection and is set to unveil....

...The G5 powerbook.

That's right. 😛

knock, knock....
uh-oh. It's Apple Legal!!

Well, I know we're going into rampant speculation... but your logic makes some sense. In the past MW shows and Developer Conferences, Apple has managed to slip in updates and new products that didn't even have a HINT of coming out prior to the announcement. So, I wouldn't be surprised to see something noone is expecting. I also agree that the leaks could have been well placed honeypots.

Exciting!

I hope that it isn't a let down like some have been. I specifically remember one keynote where Steve got up and basically announced nothing new when we were all expecting the iMac G4 which was announced about 6 months later at the next keynote. If I am remembering correctly there were even rumors of audience members hearing him say something like we should have had it ready. Please be true rumors.

Yeah, there have been a couple of keynotes after which the whole Mac web seemed to be in a state of collective depression. The worst was when a string of keynotes with unbelievable "one more things" was brought to a crashing halt by one expo where his "thing" was a thank you to Apple employees. They obviously deserved it, but it was still hard to take!

Here's the rundown of a past disappointing expo to help you all lower your expectations! It's the one where Steve hurled his video camera offstage...and the "one more thing" was iDVD 2

Why there is no live coverage

The reason the Keynote isn't streamed live is probably that they expect some serious interruptions, like protests by Apple resellers or booing because of their law suits...

i really hope there is an update for the powerbooks, i really need to get one soon. the fact that there have been no rumors about them is leading me to beleive its either something big that they've put alot of effort into keeping it a secret, or nothing at all. 🙁

Don't wait, buy one. I had that same mentality over a year ago. I finally broke down and had my pc at work replaced with a 17" powerbook. I thought for sure, by the end of 2004 a G5 powerbook would be out and I would have an "old" G4. Even more concerning were rumors of a tablet - which sounded very interesting to me.

Over a year later and it looks like no G4s for a while yet. I could be wrong and they will be introduced tomorrow but as you noted, no rumors as such. Just buy one now and you will be happy. I still love my 17" powerbook and, until the 10.3.7 update, was snappy as hell. Now I just need to downgrade to 10.3.5 and wait for Tiger.

What i'm confused about, is why is Steve's speech on the 2nd day of the conference? I guess they don't put the new products on the Apple stand until after the keynote yeah?
The exhibition part of the conference doesn't open until tomorrow, after the keynote. Today is just seminars and general schmoozing. 🙂

Yes, I can still remember my trip to MWNY 2003. Was there on Monday for conferences. On the way to lunch we walked over the exhibition floor. Noticed some openings the the window covering, my wife and I tried very hard to peak. Nothing to see, didn't even know where Apple was located.

What type of products will automatically avaible?

Will iLife 05, itunes 4.7.1/4.8/5 and the rest be ready right away?

When is a likely date for tiger?

WHat about the rumored apple mouse with scroll?

TS: New PBs G4 1.5/1.67 GHz tomorrow

Nothing spectacular. The HDD will be 5400 RPM standard, 100 gig for 15" and the 17", 60 gig for the 12"; BT 2.0; same graphics chip, but 128 MB RAM for 15" and 17". Other specs remain unchanged. They also say, PB G5 possibly at WWDC.

iTunes 4.7.1/4.8 will be available immediately, the rest of the suite will either ship later this month (if it runs on Panther) or not until Tiger ship if it only runs on Tiger. Possible Tiger Release dates: March 24 or May 24.

3 things missing from rumor round up:
5 GB mini upgrade
Apple branded speaker dock for iPod
Tiger ship date

I still think Powerbooks at the end of the month but not announced at MWSF
