Apple today made its USB-C to MagSafe 3 charging cable available to purchase separately in three new colors matching the MacBook Air, including space gray, midnight, and starlight, with pricing set at $49. Until now, the cable was only sold in silver.

Apple already includes a color-matched MagSafe 3 charging cable in the box with the new MacBook Air, but now the cable can be ordered individually from Apple's online store for those who want an extra one or need a replacement.

The cable is also compatible with the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models released last year. This means that customers who purchased a new MacBook Pro in space gray will finally be able to get a matching space gray MagSafe 3 cable, as Apple somewhat surprisingly chose to bundle a silver cable with the space gray model.

MagSafe technology allows the cable to magnetically attach to a MacBook. If someone trips on the cable, it releases so that the MacBook does not go tumbling. The cable is two meters long and features a woven design for added durability.

The new MacBook Air is now available to order ahead of a July 15 launch. The notebook is powered by Apple's new M2 chip and has been redesigned with a slightly larger 13.6-inch display, a notch, and flatter edges. Pricing starts at $1,199, and the previous-generation MacBook Air with the M1 chip remains available for $999.

Nice that they finally came out with matching cables, but can only be purchased separately? And what’s with the white USB-C connector?
Could be simple economics. The MagSafe end had to be custom designed but they had the white USB-C connectors on hand.

I thought usb c was perfect, I know I’m in the minority on this but I prefer the usb c port over the MagSafe I can charge my iPad with it, my switch controller or any usb c device, MagSafe is just for the MacBook
Nice to have the choice though. I believe you can still charge an M2 MBA via the Thunderbolt ports. I'm sure someone will correct me if not.

Wonder if the EU will allow this cable 🙄

While I assume you are joking, it illustrates how a company can keep a proprietary connector/charging system and still compl by having USB-C as well as proprietary (Magsafe3) ports that can charge.

Could be simple economics. The MagSafe end had to be custom designed but they had the white USB-C connectors on hand.

In addition, having a common USB-C connector means purchase estimates are made over all cables, and not for each color. This reduce the chance of having to many or too few based on demand.

I would say it's a safe bet to say it will, given the design of the other MagSafe3 MBs.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'd rather the 4th Thunderbolt port like with the previous Intel model for my personal use.

Same here. Apple could have made a MagSafe USB-C cable; much like are available from 3rd parties.

Don't worry, as soon as the people get bored of these dark tones they will be asking for light tones again. It's cyclical.
Honestly I'm surprised we didn't get the fun colors the M1 iMac has. Those would've been perfect for the Macbook Airs. The colors wouldn't even needed to have been the majority of the laptop. They could've made some parts and the Apple logo the fun colors while the rest was silver or midnight.
