Enjoy your slow charging tripping hazard then. Magsafe saved my 14 inch Pro when my roomba ran over it.

There's no reason Apple could not have made a breakaway USB-C cable, and had it be a higher charging speed as well. I used a breakaway USB-C cable with no issues when traveling with my MBP.

Apple would have made a MagSafe for the iPhone too had not EU got in the way stifling all innovation.

There's nothing in the spec that prevents Apple from designing a MagSafe USB-C cable. The EU directive merely requires a USB-C port and some minimal charging specs; it does not specify how the rest of the spec is implemented nor prevent custom cable designs beyond the USB-C port.

There's plenty of room to innovate; a company could have a special USB-C high speed power/data cable while a standard USB-C cable would charge at the base PD level. Apple could even implement a version of MiFi for such a cable; and still meet the USB-C spec and EU law.

Don't worry, as soon as the people get bored of these dark tones they will be asking for light tones again. It's cyclical.

indeed. silver FTW! it's timeless and also the one with the least problems with obvious wear and finger prints
though i have to admit i was quite hot for that midnight blue for the first couple of minutes when they announced it.
but i think it's silver for me from now on, though i don't regret my (now seemingly out of fashion) space grey MBP one bit :p

edit: ... if i'm in for a new laptop - which might take a while as i'm usually using my computers for a long time before switching

I didn’t know that, if that’s true then that’s great to have the choice
Total educated guesswork on my part whether it charges by Thunderbolt, but I think it has to, to comply with the regulations popping up around the world requiring manufacturers (chiefly Apple) to adopt a standard instead of forcing people to use proprietary connectors.

EDIT better grammar.

My wife gets silver laptops and I get the dark gray. We both have a 2019 16" MBPro fully loaded but hers has a 4TB SSD and I have the 8TB SSD. She has a fully loaded 13" Intel MBPro and I have the M1 MBAir. My 14"MBPro is also gray.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I'd rather the 4th Thunderbolt port like with the previous Intel model for my personal use.
I feel your pain. Magsafe fan here, but $2+ trillion dollar company I would have though could have satisfied everybody by bringing back Magsafe without losing a port...pretty sure I could have figured a way of doing it just by scribbling on the back of a fag packet with a pencil. But yeah this is Apple...

biggest thing with the ports on the MBA is that they are too close to each other. even if you are using/needing just one single USB-A adapter, the other port becomes unusable as the other USB-C connector won't fit anymore.
putting both ports on the opposite sides would have solved this (and other stuff)

Could be simple economics. The MagSafe end had to be custom designed but they had the white USB-C connectors on hand.
This is so not Apple, why not just make the USB-C blue as well. This looks like it is wrong assembled what a joke.

Fact that they released matching colours due to complaints is one, but doing this shizzle is just meh.

Plethora of adapters plug into both at once. However a third port on the other side, currently only occupied by a headphone socket that nearly no one will use, would have solved this.

For the second time in this thread, I'll state what to me was the beedin' obvious within 5 seconds of my seeing the new cables:
IT'S TO MATCH THE WHITE CHARGERS.

I'm so annoyed Apple is charging so much for this cable. It should be no more than $30 really.

It's expensive enough that if I need an extra charging cable I'm just going to get a USB-C PD cable because those are dirt cheap. I'm keeping my magsafe cable at my desk at work because I plug and unplug there a lot; it'll save wear and tear on the ports.

i'm often using a hub when i need an adapter, in which case the second port is still staying usable if i want to keep full bandwidth, but that tight arrangement isn't fully thought out.

USB charging on the M1 MacBook Air is great, but Magsafe will be a good addition I guess.

Space Gray 16" M1 MBP here. I rather like my "silver" MagSafe cable...it reminds me everyday how glad I am that I switched to "Space Gray."

Ironically, I tripped over my new 16" MBP's cord and the cable pulled out not from the MagSafe, but from the USB-C at the power block. Double MagSafe locations, LOL!!!

They should have brought back the more effective "L-Shape" connector, IMO.

MATCH THEM BY PRODUCING BLUE CHARGERS! It’s a stupid design move, which is easily resolved. Why would you bother to make them in the first place.
Apple doesn't make plastic accessories or products in anything but glossy white for a reason. Pretty sure that a big blue plastic charger would look like a cheap third party replicate from Wish

I’m pretty sure that the MagSafe isn’t what replaced the 4th Thunderbolt in the MBPs, it was replaced with the SD slot and HDMI (they occupy the PCI spots the Thunderbolt would have used). The MagSafe doesn’t use an PCI spot since it’s just power.

They make black too (certain pro accessories). Black might have been a more natural choice for the cable, though I have a hard time imagining the power block in anything but white.

It is also in the Thunderbolt 4 spec. Apple couldn’t call them Thunderbolt 4 ports if you couldn’t charge with it.
