I replaced my nightstand charger with this and I really appreciate the simplicity this product offers for even non travel purposes.
Me too.

I’ve read this thread with some amusement.

As a complete apple fanboy I buy most of the stuff Apple release.
and I suspect my income exceeds even Mr WolfSnap.

I mourned the demise of AirPower. It could have been great. If apple could stop it overheating.

I recently have bought 5 x mag safe chargers for use around the house and bedroom.
Plus 10 x 20w usb chargers (now they are at a bargain price) as I finally phase out the legacy usb 2 chargers and move to USB C for the rest of the family.

The mag safe chargers work well and although it is true sometimes dust creates a circle on the phone case where it has attached it comes off again while just using the phone.
The satisfying “clonk” of attaching the iphone plus the charging circle “ping“ coming up on the display is a joyous thing.

Which brings me to the mag duo.
My 3 children and wife have iwatches and wireless charging iPhones.
So I should be buying 4 MagSafe Duos
(Personally I think men look better with a nice mechanical watch so I have no use for one myself)

However the build quality with reference to the hinge does not look great. To me the MagSafe duo seems more suited for travel.

I have therefore ordered just 1 for my wife which will be used solely for travel.

If Apple could release a more substantial non travel iPhone, iwatch and AirPod charger that would be of more interest.

The Hinge is the same fabric based circuit as in the iPad keyboard cases. It's very robust, and when you close the charging clam-shell, it makes a very satisfying clunk sound too.

I thought I'd use mine for just travel, but, honestly, my old Apple Watch charging base might end up being rolled down to my daughter now -- the duo charger is very nice looking on my night table.

p.s. I love mechanical watches too, but, honestly, my Apple Watch is just so much more useful... I bought the black apple stainless steel band -- totally worth the money, and really makes the watch look a bit more masculine, if you're into that sort of thing.

Re: hinge.
will reflect on whether I like the wife’s enough. Although I would still have preferred something without a hinge..... i wonder what they could call it..... maybe “AirPower”

re: mechanical watch
as a boy you can’t wear Jewellery. At least you shouldn’t in my view if you aren’t going for the ”gangsta” look. Beautiful watches are something boys can wear though without looking like a drug dealer / footballer etc.
Unlike girls boys always have pockets so I have no problem having my phone on me at all times. So while I accept an iwatch has much more functionality than a nice Swiss watch it has nowhere near the beauty. Beauty not just to look at but the beauty of a piece of exceptional engineering. i like the idea of an Apple Watch but not enough to stop wearing my lovely watches. As one of my colleagues remarked “you have too much class to wear an iWatch”. I think it was meant as a compliment

Nice watch -- but, I'll stick to my Apple Watches :) Also, I could care less what other people think about what I wear. If it means I have less class, I guess that's a risk I'm willing to take. Also, not sure where I said I was 'gangsta'.. I'm a middle age guy with a fancy car, profitable business in the financial sector, and a family who loves me. I tend to give off "very smart jew" as opposed to gangsta vibes.. LOL
