“The MagSafe Charger makes wireless charging a snap. The perfectly aligned magnets attach to your iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro and provide faster wireless charging”

I don’t understand Apple’s the use of the word “wireless” with a wire connected to the phone by a magnet...I’d reserve that term until the phone can charge in the air, like that technology in G.I.Joe the Movie (cartoon version).

I don’t, like, necessarily dislike this product outright, just really feel like there’s a missed opportunity to make this more airport and airplane and train and walking-friendly.

I could really get down with something like this... 7B5CDEDA-A721-4F02-8BC2-B7D174820307.jpegwith a built in battery and a usb-c port in in the back, and MagSafe charging circle on top...like an AirPods case. Like, if you get out of the shower and realize you forgot to charge your watch, you could just set it in the case while you get dressed, then put the lid on it and throw it in your bag and let it charge while you get to your destination. I feel like the ability to charge it on the go would be more practical solution

for your phone, that exists. It’s called a battery case. for your watch, just put a cable in your car, or get a battery pack.
and yes, inductive charging is the proper name for it. It’s not technically wireless, but true wireless charging is years away

Do 99.7% of people need 4k/60 Dolby vision HDR video recording? No. Just record in 480p.
Do 99.7% of people need OLED? No. Let's just use the less expensive LCD.
Do 99.7% of people need a Pro Max sized display? No. Let's just have all future iPhones be the size of the iPhone mini.
Do 99.7% of people need the included Lightning to USB-C cable? No. Let's just stick with USB-A forever.
Do 99.7% of people need an iPhone 12/11/Xs/X at all? No. Just get the iPhone SE.

Really, the argument in terms of what most people "need" is ridiculous. Plenty of people probably don't "need" a smart phone at all and can live with a flip phone. Most people don't need Apple as they can function on Windows and Blackberry devices.
Why do you keep comparing chargers to things that have an actual difference in experience? HDR provides a better picture quality. Oled is superior to LCD picture quality wise, higher end phones perform better and provide different experiences. If magsafe and the duel wireless charger provided faster charging speeds vs competition then you have an argument but they don't.

I'm fine with Apple selling this stuff buy it if you need it or want it. But it's over priced for what is in my mind. If people want spend that it's their prerogative. But it's a waste of money for consumers who will buy it and really shouldn't based on their income.

My order is shipping arriving tomorrow coming from RIALTO, CA US picked up from SAN BERNARDINO, CA

Wait, you're changing your argument from what is "needed" to what is "better". Ok, so if you want to argue what is better, let's have that discussion. Wireless charging does have an actual difference. It's *better* than a wire being plugged in for many reasons.

1. I pick up my phone 100 times a day. A lightning cable would constrain my movement (I couldn't lean back in my chair to use the phone while plugged in for example). So I often leave it unplugged after the first pickup or I'd need to unplug and replug 100 times a day. With wireless (MagSafe included), I can pick up my phone, use it for 2 minutes, and drop it back on easily a hundred times a day. This is a better experience.

2. Moving the phone while the lightning cable is plugged would fray the cable much faster. With wireless charging: not so much. When I pick up my phone, my middle finger naturally shoves off the MagSafe from behind, so there's 0 tug on the cable.

3. It's easier for airports and coffee shops to provide charging solutions to customers since there's only one standard they'll need to worry about for the future. I'm already seeing LAX and Long Beach airport adopting it. Airports don't need to buy 2-3 cables for each charging station. They just need to focus on one charger which saves money.

4. Public wireless stations are also safer, security wise, as a public USB wired charger can potentially back up the entire phone (knowing my mom, she'd click yes to any prompt that pops up when she plugs in a cable).

5. If you do decide to dump iPhone, your charger will still work with any Qi Android phone. Less ewaste and more compatibility with devices.

No, it's a waste of money for *you*. It's not a waste of money for consumers in general. Just because you can't see the benefits doesn't mean there aren't any benefits to this product. Not everyone uses the iPhone the same way you do.

I agree with everything you listed here. Also, I guarantee you that when Apple removes all ports from the iPhone, they’re going to use security and waterproofing as their main two points.
can’t really break into an iPhone using a gray key or whatever that thing is called without a lightning port, can you?

???

THIS ENTIRE THREAD IS ABOUT A DUAL CHARGER!

1) there is no 1 size fits all phone battery case
2) a battery case does not protect the screen when thrown in a bag
3) having a battery and puck and a bag is a super-crappy solution
4) you can’t bring your car into an airport terminal—what in the hell does that have to do with a travel charger? The whole point of any of these products is to reduce clutter, not create it
5) I already said it is not wireless, why are you saying it again? Calling a MagSafe Puck wireless is like calling a 2014 MacBook Pro MagSafe cord wireless...I see no ostensible difference

I thought we were adults here, or at the very least, responsible.
This is an all-out argument filled with ad-hominem attacks centered on a charger. A charger.
I'm shocked. (are puns problematic yet?)

Again starbucks is different from another form of coffee that tastes different. Charging is charging on difference is how quickly some things can charge vs other things. Spend your money anyway you want. It's your money. Still doesn't mean the Apple chargers aren't over priced for what they are and do.
This is the exact same argument that Android fans complain about the iPhone. "My Android phone does everything the iPhone does and more for less money. Apple products are overpriced". Is there like a website or something that lists these? No charging isn't charging. Setting my phone on a pad vs grabbing a cord and plugging it in isn't the same. Yes the end result is the same but doing it is not.

...and something I still haven’t seen in any of the posts in this thread:

An alternative wireless charging option (and MagSafe at that) for both the phone and watch that neatly and easily folds up so I can carry in my bag

Anyone??

You COULD get an AW case with the charger built in, back in 2015, for the low low price of ten grand.

What haven't you seen? It would be nice if the AW and iPhone could charge on the same pad but I don't think that's possible with the way each are setup. If you mean two seperate pads then maybe someone could make a travel version. I don't really think the Apple MagSafe Duo was meant as a travel charger. It looks like it belongs on the nightstand at home.

it's built for both and if one needs to carry it in their pocket they can do as well lol

Exactly...I appreciate people posting great nightstand options or telling me how affordable this or is or how expensive it is or what cars they drive...but show me an alternative that folds, works in ANY location (is portable)....waiting.....

“It’s so overpriced!!!”

Overpriced for a charger that can charge the two Apple products I really NEED in most cases during the day while still being able to carry in my pocket??

Having JUST THIS with a single cable and a single brick in my bag makes it worth even more.

If you don’t travel regularly or don’t like the look for your home, fine....IT’S NOT FOR YOU!

If you carry 10 credit cards and a big wad of cash because you are so rich, fine, the MagSafe wallet is NOT FOR YOU!

It is smaller than i thought. This will very good for traveling.
And looks cleaner on my night stand than before. (2 cables that keep moving around)

Auto-centering with Magsafe is very convenient.

And the 12 Mini is easily removed one handed. (Just slightly turn while lifting it up, just like you would remove a magnet from a wall)

Quality seems good too.

Still too expensive for my liking, but something tells me i won't want to return it.

“It’s so overpriced!”

If you want overpriced, look at the lightning-to-3.5mm cable I just bought from Apple. Ouch.

I also ordered the duo charger. It does what I want it to do.

What I haven’t ever bought is Apple Care. Just as well: in 30 years of owning Apple products, I never would have needed to have made a claim.

Haven’t ever bought a screen protector, either.

Point is, you pays your money and you makes your choice. No-one’s forcing anyone to buy anything

I ordered mine and used Apple Card monthly installments. Yes, I do think it is a bit expensive, but for the convenience of travel I can eliminate a power brick and one cable. I already have the 20 watt charger and I don't care that it doesn't get the full 15w fast charge while I am asleep. If I need the fast charge, I will plug it in directly to the phone. I am still planning on getting the new Belkin MagSafe charger for my nightstand.

No you *don't* get two of those things for free. You get a lightning to usb-c cable with the phone which doesn't charge charge other USB-C devices in the house such as a spouse's Android phone, a laptop, headphones, PS5/Xbox controllers, list goes on... Also an Apple watch charging cable will never give you a single cable charging experience which is one of the main reasons for getting the duo charger.

Keyword *if*.

Not everyone that bought an iPhone 12 bought an iPad with a USB-C port. Talk about drinking the juice, that's some classic cherry picking of info there. 🤦‍♂️

1. A MagSafe can charge most modern Android phones and other accessories for one since it's Qi charging compatible. Lightning cable can't do that. Immediately you're wrong there.
2. People prefer wireless charging. What you're arguing is essentially "why do people want wireless charging" which is a completely separate argument as it has less to do with the duo charger. If you want wireless charging, MagSafe guarantees alignment which is the #1 problem with Qi chargers as many have started their day with 10% battery because of Qi chargers.
Good grief if you think it’s too expensive don’t buy it, it makes you look desperate begging for a lower price.
