I use a canon 5d mark iv and my raw files wont let me use quick view and preview, all photos are black, I was worried my photos were damaged, but in Lightroom it's fine. This never happened before, I use quick view using space bar to go through the bad ones and delete and now it wont let me do it, any help

I’m on 15.4 and just checked my 5D Mark lV files. No problem with quick view, works as it always has.

70D raws on M4 MBP: Quick Look (space in Finder) and Finder preview (in column view) are black. The Finder thumbnail (in both icon and column view) is ok. Preview app is also ok.

qlmanage -m plugins | grep -I public.image shows that System/Library/QuickLook/Image.generator is used for Canon raws. There is not a Quick Look generator for any more specific (e.g. for com.canon.cr2-raw-image or public.camera-raw-image file types). This is true for both 15.3.2 (on my Intel iMac) which works as expected and for 15.4 (M4 MBP) which does not.

The build number of Image.qlgenerator has changed from 1002.3.3 to 1002.5.2. If there is a bug it is in that.

FWIW: My iPhone (iOS 18.4) does not have this problem. The Files app views my RAWs just fine.

Edit: No reports of this problem in photo web sites - e.g. https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/68209561

My raw files are stored locally this is so bad I use my work to scroll down and delete the bad ones, is there a work around

I'm having the same issue, I upgraded to 15.4 today and now I get black thumbnails and black window with Quicklook and CR2 files. Interesting if I resize the Quicklook window the image appears. Restarting device makes no difference

I can confirm that on resizing the Quick Look window the images appear. Hardly a good workaround!

There seem to be 2 different groups of users with CR2/CR3:
1) Those for whom everything works as expected.
2) Those with the black images - and reports here are all consistent:
Black previews in Finder column view,
Black windows in Quick Look (also referred to as Quick View),
Quick Look windows showing the image after the window is resized.
Preview (and Adobe apps) showing the images as expected.

This has come at the worst time I have 2000 wedding photos to go through and I normally use quick view to delete the bad ones before putting the ones I need into lightroom, Apple has really messed me up

At least there is the workaround of importing all to LR and culling there. But I fully understand the pain.

I have submitted a report to Apple using Feedback Assistant. If you have the time, it would be good if you (and everyone else having the problem) submit reports.

I have just proved myself wrong regarding consistency. On my Intel iMac:
Black previews in Finder column view, but
Quick Look (hit space in Finder) displays correctly.

I have a call with Apple Support this morning. I suspect they will want me to reinstall the OS as it’s the only standard troubleshooting that hasn’t been attempted yet, which I’m loathed to do.

Another workaround is to use Adobe Bridge where you can preview the files and command+delete will move an image to the bin if you don’t want it. This is what I’m using at the moment, as previously Quicklook was my method of doing my initial cull of images.

As expected Apple have advised a re-install. My internet is not great so it's going to have to wait until this evening. If anyone else is able to try a re-install it would be interesting to hear your results.

They don’t have a clue, it’s a bug with 15.4 a reinstall won’t help
