Are you sure it’s a problem with the OS? I’ve posted here previously that Quick Look works for me as it always has with .CR2 & .CR3 files from a variety of Canon cameras. I’m on the latest non-Beta version.

Yes it is; tried it on others, use canon 5d mark iv on macOS 15.4 and 15.4.1 and it space bar previews don’t work

Hmm, don’t know what to tell you. Quick Look works as expected with my 5d Mark iV files as well as R5 Mark ll files and a number of other models. Hope you get it worked out.

Do you have apple silicon mac and you mean Quick Look using space bar to open raw files

M1 Studio Ultra running 15.4.1. I normally convert my files to .dng when importing but I still have .cr2 & .cr3 files from a variety of Canon Cameras ranging from a 20D to a R5 Markll. Quick Look will correctly display any of them by selecting the file and pressing the space bar.

That’s so strange everyone I know is having the same issue, so don’t get how it’s ok for you, no I don’t convert any raw image, it’s straight from the camera

Sorry, I don’t have any idea why so many people are having problems with Quick Look and I’m not but it’s a fact that I’m not. I could show screen captures of it I guess but I don’t know what anyone would be able to tell from them.

None of us do. And this is clearly (as you and others have pointed out) not a universal issue. My interpretation of the lack of widespread reporting is that this only affects a minority.

I am interested to know from both those with and without the issue what is being used as the Quick Look generator for their RAW images. To do this go to Terminal and enter the command qlmanage -m | grep -i -e "public.image" -e "raw" The qlmanage -m lists all the Quick Look generators installed and the grep selects just those of interest.

On my Macs which do have the issue the command and output are:

qlmanage -m | grep -i -e "public.image" -e "raw"
public.image -> /System/Library/QuickLook/Image.qlgenerator (1002.5.2)

This shows that the inbuilt Quick Look generator is being used for all image types, including RAW. It is possible that some people are using other Quick Look generators, maybe just for RAW files.

Note that for those with Intel Macs, the issue may only appear with the image in Finder's Column View or Get Info - the hit spacebar Quick Looks may be as expected.

I get the same grep output as above and I can (after a few seconds) Quick Look Canon CR3 RAW files with spacebar but have blank finder icons and a black preview in Get Info unless I resize the window.

MacOS 15.4.1 M2Pro Mac Mini

My issue was the RAW files were being flagged up by Gatekeeper as potential malware

This is a screen recording I made using Quicklook on my M1 Studio Ultra running 15.4.1. The camera files in order are: 5D Markll, 5DSR, Eos 90D, Eos Rebel SL1 & R5 Markll. You'll have to take my word for it that I'm opening the files with the space bar as I have no way to show that.

Similar to me but my files have no thumbnail just a blank white "PS" icon as Photoshop is the assigned open with... app for my CR3s. It used to have thumbnails before the recent MacOS update

All of the files I posted have thumbnails except the R5 Markll. However, even without a thumbnail it opens correctly with Quicklook.

I do believe you, I just don’t get why some of us are having the issues and some doesn’t

The Helpme-Prognosti Postulate (HP-p) stipulates that:

For every case where need (N) >= observed expectation (Ox), a reverse correlation between observed output (Oo) and duration expected (Dx) exceeds the desired outcome (Do).

N < Do >= Dx < (Oo + Ox)

That being said: if the observed friction (Of) is not factored-in, results may vary ;)

Anyone tried the 15.5 rc to see if it’s fixed

This bug has been fixed in macOS 15.5 which should be out tonight at 6pm uk time
