Isn't that every game on Steam that got a later Mac release? I think GOG does that too.

Or did SE do that on the MAS?
I've seen a few games work that way when they got a Mac version. Valheim has gone that way, but Disco Elysium did not and I could swear that there was a Mac version of that before Valheim.

I guess it's not cpu intensive, and Apple Silicon has such large single core performance that is enough even to run it with Rosetta.

GPTK performances depend a lot of which game you are running, 3d API translation layers can be quite fast, it could be Control didn't need any weird feature that can't be mapped on Metal, and so the it was fast enough even on GPTK. But for example the native versions uses quite fewer RAM.
It also means that the Metal code of the native version isn't that much better than what D3DMetal generates. Is the D3DMetal that good, or have developers just used some automatic conversion? Could be both.

DXVK/D3DMetal/DXMT/Whatever can be very good if all they have to do is to map the DirectX calls to Metal/Vulkan without any additional conversion. It all depends on the game you are trying to run is made.

By the way, it seems the Mac version of Control that was tested above was a 4 months old build, so the final release might perform better.

I just tested the game on my M1 Pro MacBook Pro. I see no "DLSS" in the menu, but MetalFX. HDR is available, but there appears to be an issue with the brightness, on my Mac at least. The image is very dark unless you set the screen brightness to at least 50% where the game suddenly becomes brighter.
On "high" preset, MetalFX causes some annoying artifacts that randomly appear on certain edges. On medium preset, they don't. The difference between high and medium preset isn't much noticeable anyway. The game runs fine on Medium, 1900*1200 (rendered at 1280*800).

Question: I'm in the first room. Is this "QWSAD move" tooltip going to stay forever? I know how to move. I've been walking around for 10 minutes. I haven't found an option in the menu to remove it.

Among the games I've tested, the one that makes the fans scream the loudest is Hitman, for some reason. Fans kick in loud after less than a minute of game play. For Control, I didn't hear the fans before ~5 min.

The version that came out was actually ready 4 months ago and should not have been released at all. The last update is the version that should have come out, with HDR.

I wonder if you had to redownload the whole game to get the update (assuming you had it before the update went live).

“In the terminal stats, "Control" is using 57w~75w GPU power(which is pretty high). Meanwhile, AC Shadows is only using 35w~40w normally. According to my Stats app, Control really puts this machine's power to work-it uses a lot of the system's resources. Sometimes I got 130w~140w power usage, which is only appearing in some of my 3d CGI works apps.”
Ubisoft has a mischievous sense of humor. Giving us a version of AC:S that leads the industry in power efficiency… 🤣

In Control on a 14 inch m4 max I face a strange performance issue which I am afraid may be due to throttling. On the same scene it can go from 60fps to 45fps. Then just pressing pause (escape key) puts the game back to 60fps for a couple of seconds and then back to 45 fps. I wonder if it’s thermal issues or a bug I the game. But that is a huge performance hit. (The MacBook is on a stand with good ventilation).

Well it may have something to do with Ray Tracing… or background process. I'll do more tests…

This game has a lot of variables that can surge demand in bursts, so yeah it takes time to test and find the optimal settings for any given Mac.

And yeah, ray tracing is the prime suspect, you can stand in the same position but just change camera angle and already the required number of rays to bounce can increase a few folds if you happen to see a window. In settings you see the number of RT samples is always kept minimum unless Ultra or manually turn it up on the slider.

It's not unusual games have higher fps in the menus and lower when entering the game. MBP 14" M Max has always been known for throttling too. M Max is a little too much for 14".

Yes I am concerned about that. I wonder how much better a 16inch would do and if I should replace my 14inch with 16inch (but I do like the portability of the 14inch), but couldn’t find very conclusive answers about throttling. And it’s not consistent in my tests. I wonder if a background process could be the major culprit instead of thermals (because I something have ~20% drop in performance…).
