40-45 fps at 720p sounds a bit off but if you compare with mobile 5090 the comparison will be more "accurate" since Apple Silicon has iGPU. At 1440p with very high settings, RT everywhere and max TGP 175W without DLSS/FG The Tech Chap gets 45 fps in AC Shadows on Razor Blade 16. With DLSS4 Balanced (835p) he gets 63. In another review of Razor Blade 16 with medium settings, everything off and DLSS on Matthew Moniz gets 55 fps. Unclear which DLSS scaling he used at 1600p so it’s 480-960p.

Yeah the mobile 5090 is a power limited desktop 5080. I'm surprised it performs as well as it does with less than half the power budget.

Yeah, 2560 x 1600, native, all settings maxed, no dlss, no frame gen, no dynamic res. Goes around 32-42 depending on where you are. Prolly can go lower lol.

Is he saying they are making a native launcher for the existing benchmark tests, or that they are going to bring the same suite that runs on Windows over?
They are just adding the full version of Steel Nomad. Currently it’s just Steel Nomad Lite, which is mobile focused benchmark. Early score from a pre-release version.

They are also making a heavier ray tracing benchmark for mobile than Solar Bay.

They won’t be adding benchmarks like Time Spy etc. Those are largely obsolete tbh.

Consider also that the 14" model is not thermally equipped for heavy GPU task.
Why do they say "20 cores" on the video?

Because the person making the video is not the best.

A reasonable person might enquire as to why a mediocre YouTuber was given a pre release build.

I cannot answer that.

I think that's a pretty harsh way to say it. Pretty sure all the tech reviewers have had similar mistakes.

They have 2 decent RT tests already. Speedway and Port Royal. The only thing they are really missing is a full path tracing test instead of feature test they currently use.

I boycott any content by Matt Talks Tech. He makes many errors and blames his followers for not understanding or missing the point. Then he continues to make the same errors with no self-criticism. I saw some of his reviews of MBP M4 Max and he claimed that MBP 14” M4 Max ”absolutely squashed RTX 4090” in Rise of the Tomb Raider at 1200p with medium settings. I and others tried to tell him that there are many other native ARM64 games and he wasn’t pushing the GPUs at 1200p medium and with such an old game but he made excuses by saying it wasn’t a dedicated gaming video where you push the GPUs to the ”extreme”. What’s the point then in having a dedicated part about testing games and the GPUs?

In another video he claimed he tested Shadow of the Tomb Raider but showed a benchmark video of Rise of the Tomb Raider. He still keeps using SotTR in his videos. He also keeps comparing Cyberpunk in Crossover with the native PC version. He also called DLSS for DLS in his latest M4 Max vs 5090 video along with ”20-core M4 Max”. In a video about throttling on MBP 14” he showed a short clip of using High Power mode before the tests without saying anything about it but also never mentioned if he was using it during the tests. At least he has started to include RE 4 in his tests but I don’t recommend his videos.

Finished DOOM 3 on my MacBook Pro 14" using the Mac Source Port.

The last time I finished it was in 2005. The game felt a bit repetitive for 3/4 of the way through. It was only in the last 1/4 that it introduced newer environments and situations.

I tried to watch just one of his videos and couldn't get past the 5 minute mark because of how sloppy his testing methodology was, and the complete lack of explanation of what settings were being tested across the devices being compared. When so many others in the space are actively improving their testing methodologies (Jays2Cents, Gamers Nexus, Hardware Unboxed, Paul's Hardware, etc.), MTT spins his wheels and pushes back when called out for sloppy testing practices.

Lord. Got a link for that? My 4090 with maxed settings, no dlss, no frame gen, does over 80 at 720p.

Let me find the YouTube channel where I learned about that issue. You may already be aware of it.

ETA: ZWORMz Gaming is the name of the channel
and I don’t recall the timestamp but I do recall that he wasn’t comparing flagship cards, but the 5070 ti was the one he was using!

It's all good. Numbers are all over the place depending on where you are, etc. Thanks for the references.

PC gamers spend 25% of their time on games that are 2-5 years old and 67% on games that are 6 or more years old, i.e. they spend 92% of their time on games that are 2 or more years old, not new games. Considering games often are released later on Mac PC gamers are mostly like Mac gamers, they play older games, not new releases.

There were also about 908 million PC gamers in the world in 2024. The number is extrapolated but 1% of that would be about 9 million Mac gamers (if we use the Steam stats).

P.S. Macrumors has started to give us dog names? 🤔😄
Nevermind, I realised it's April Fools' Day.
