Valve simply wants to build its own walled garden, that's why they are investing on steam deck and Linux.

>Linux
>Walled Garden

Do you hear yourself? Linux is open source and you can do whatever you want with the OS. How the hell is that a walled garden lmao? The Steam Deck is a 100% open device, with every component user removable and the entire OS built in fully moddable by the user. You can even dualboot Windows on it if you wanted, or replace the OS with Windows (though why would you? SteamOS is better)

Probably it would have taken very few resources to make a Mac port, but that's not something they want to do.

That is not true in the slightest. Throwing CS2 into the Game Porting Toolkit is not a be all end all solution. Testing still has to be done to make sure everything works. This isn't some single player game we're talking about here, this is a massive multiplayer game with millions playing concurrently everyday. Making sure all multiplayer systems work and don't cause any unintended reaction that effects online play (especially in a game that is as highly technical as Counter Strike) takes a lot of work, and that's work that is just not worth it in the grand scheme of things. They'd have to redesign the entire game AGAIN just to get it to run on Metal, and with less than 1% of players being on macOS, it's not worth it. It was easy to do a Linux version since the Linux version uses the exact same APIs as Windows.

Maybe take a deep breath. You don’t have to jump to valves defence at every opportunity. I’m gonna take the word of one of Handbrake’s Mac contributors on this. FreeBSD is also completely open, that doesn’t mean the PlayStation isn’t a walled garden.

If Valve was building a walled garden, they wouldn't be allowing people to uninstall the OS of the Steam Deck, or modify the Steam client with third party plugins, or allow you to add non-Steam software to Steam, or just literally run whatever software you wanted on the Deck. That's the complete opposite of a walled garden lmao.

The key point you’re missing are the words “wants to build”. It’s a process. Steam will absolutely start anymore and more proprietary “bits” to their offerings.

There has been zero evidence of any proprietary "bits" having been added at all, and Valve's fanbase are very passionate, datamining every tiny update they can and every stretch of code. If there was any sign of anything proprietary being added, we would've known ahead of time.

I get it, y'all are upset the game is never coming to Mac, I am too. But saying Valve's making a walled garden as a cope to the lack of Mac support is grossly ignorant and is gonna get you laughed at by literally anyone outside of this little Mac fanboy circle.

Unfortunately for you. I have no interest in what anyone thinks of my opinions. I say what I believe is true. Living for others opinions is a wasted life. Why would I value what a Linux user thinks? They have already shown poor taste.

Claiming gaming is never coming to Mac is a strange thing to say in the current climate. Things haven’t looked this good for years. Within 5 years, there will be way more AAA titles on the mac. Linux will still have basically zero.

What's that supposed to mean lmao? Oh no they use an OS that is open source and they can do whatever they want with. How barbaric.

Okay now that is a cope post. You're telling me Linux, the open source platform with countless compatibility layers from Wine to Proton, will have zero AAA titles. Linux, the platform that can run any AAA game day one thanks to Steam Proton, will have zero AAA games...

Openness doesn’t come into it. Linux is an awful os. I’ve had to use it since the late 90s. I far prefer any BSD.

lol. Proton. Linux could run every game possible through proton, and all that would prove is the need for a tool like that due to the lack of interest shown by game devs. The Mac will have more games that have actually been created/ported while Linux will have basically zero.

Cope indeed.

You know how many Linux users care that they aren't native ports? Grand total of zero lmao.

Who cares if it's a native port or not when on Linux you can still play the game. You can't on Mac, not unless you use CrossOver or Whisky. I can play Starfield on my Steam Deck. You can't on your Macbook, not unless you install Windows.

So proton counts on Linux but crossover/gptk doesn’t on macOS? Lol. Hell, why wasn’t I counting parallels as Mac gaming for all those years?

Linux users never cared about the quality of their unix subsystems (systemd, broken poll etc) why would they care about native games.

Broad generalization from you which massively overestimates the number of Steam users who would even care about proprietary stuff being added. I don't see a significant segment of the Steam user base caring about open source and whether they can modify SteamOS or the Steam Deck itself. The percentage of users who would fall into either category is probably lower than the total number of installs on Mac OS.

Unless you have some top-shelf hardware (or close to top-shelf), you can't really run Starfield on most Windows machines either. The developers for that game went super ambitious with their designs and graphics, which means the game runs like trash on any mechanical HDD, most videocards below a GeForce 3060/Radeon 6700, etc. I would wager that Starfield on the Steam Deck would have to downgrade the graphics in order to even get playable framerates.

It can run if you turn everything down to Low, apply supersampling with FSR 2, 50% render resolution and turn off motion blur, depth of field and film grain but I guess that's a benefit of small screens. ;)

There's a reason why I keep saying Australian Siri is objectively the best Siri voice.

I really wanna go on vacation in Australia one day. They know how to party.

Right now you can play ~70% of games available on Steam on Linux. You just install and play. It just works.

I bet in 5 years Apple's GPT will be completely unusable on the latest games and macOS, ports will still be sporadic and Proton will keep on trucking 🤘.

Right now, the Linux market for native games is absolutely dead. Proton is the destroyer of Linux gaming. If Proton is Linux gaming, then Crossover/GPT/Parallels is Mac gaming.

Right now the Mac market is better for native games, in five years it will be even better.

The nonsense about GPT dying is wild speculation born out of hate.

It's like saying "I bet in 5 years Crossover will be completely unusable on the latest games and macOS, ports will still be sporadic and Proton will keep on trucking" as if AGPTK, Crossover or D3DMetal won't evovle and be updated. Just last year before Crossover 23 people here who claimed to have worked for a long time with Wine said DX12 support is not going to happen for years. Next year Crossover added some support and suddenly Apple overnight solved the whole thing buy creating D3DMetal and licensing it to Crossover.
