Nice, so the wobbling on the table stops...

...also nobody can distinguish the iPhone Pro from the Pixel Pro when both are in nice leather cases... 🤣
I’m already rocking a Pixel 9 Pro in leather. Guess I’m a year ahead of the trend. 😂

Edit: Ewww - sry for the dirty leather desk mat. Haha.

For spatial recording you want a larger parallax.
True. I guess it comes down to which they prioritize. does Apple really care about spatial that much given the sales volume of AVP? Enough to worsen the experience for however many hundreds of millions of iPhone Pro/Pro maxes there are out there?

There is a way, but it means thicker overall phones. On the plus side, at least it would mean more space for a larger battery.
Alternatively it could be done using worse cameras, so maybe for the SE but certainly not an option for the Pro models.
Of course, you could always get rid of the bump just by making the entire phone uniformly as think as the bump, which among other things would have a notable affect on its weight, when some people already complain that the pro max and plus models are too heavy. They really would be chunky bricks if they did that. I think that a camera bump is the lesser of two evils.

how about some smaller phone options?

Wouldn't help with the thickness, though I understand that you mean the weight. But for better or worse, I think that consumers have spoken. People have been voting with their wallets and favouring phones with larger displays for a while now.

Yeah, I was more on about weight
I actually like thickness in a handheld device, if the weight is in check

It fits in my hand more comfortably when not so thin

If these rumours pan out count me in sending my iphone 12 pro max to the old phone retirement home.

The 17 pro max smaller dynamic island and design change has convinced me its time to update my handset.

I'll see your "radical" and raise you "more": Why not just make a true camera with no "thinner" limitations working against quality of picture but install the telephony app as one of the apps on the camera (buds for phone use, NOT holding a camera up to one's ear)... like this...

full

Telephony is just an app (not necessarily a form factor). In fact, I have no iPhone. I use Cellular Mini with Buds as (ALSO) my phone and at times use a MB as my phone. A Phone app that runs in a camera body would make a camera a phone... like a map/camcorder/tape measure/flashlight/iPod app in a phone makes it a map/camcorder/tape measure/etc.

Optical physics cannot be overcome. An ever-better camera fights against "thinner" phone case objectives. However, if the big focus is "better camera", perhaps they should make a camera that can also run a phone app. There seems plenty of room in that concept for massive improvements to both camera and phone... and battery life, etc... unlike all "thinner" aspirations.
Color me surprised that someone who "has no iPhone" thinks something like this is anything other than ridiculous.

I'd be interested if it didn't have to be married to a cell phone plan.

The alternative is thinner & thinner phone at ever-rising price with bigger & bigger camera bumps. Eventually the iPhone will look like a capital P from the side. ;)

I LOVE THIS!!! We can make a tripod mount for the car, and charge ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS for it!

They just changed the camera layout on iphone to better make immersive video for the vision pro. Why would they want to change the lens on the pro to a non-stereo video setup?

Not a fan, it looks very top heavy plus the three camera holes somehow look worse when presented in a straight line.

If they do go for cameras in a straight line (though I'm not sure how spatial video will work with this layout) I'd prefer something that made the individual camera cut outs more discreet like my very amateur mock-ups below:

Your second render looks the most “iPhone-y” of any render of this purported design change I’ve seen

Next year's iPhone 17 Pro models will reportedly feature a major redesign, specifically centering around changes to the rear camera module, and now new supply chain information appears to confirm the striking change, according to a Chinese leaker.

Late last month, The Information's Wayne Ma claimed that the rear of the ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max will feature a "rectangular camera bump made of aluminum rather than traditional 3D glass," while the bottom half will continue to be made of glass to support wireless charging. The report also said the "iPhone 17 Air" currently has a "large, centered camera bump on its back" with a single camera.

Concept renders like the one pictured above have been making the rounds ever since The Information report. However, this morning, Digital Chat Station, a Weibo user responsible for a range of details about the camera technology of upcoming iPhone models, claimed that supply chain materials they have seen appear to confirm the major camera module change.

"The details of the camera arrangement are unclear, but the module is of this elongated oval shape," said the leaker, commenting on the concept render image. "Many new Android phones next year are also expected to adopt a similar design," the leaker added.

If accurate, the Google Pixel-style module redesign would be one of the most significant changes to Apple's signature square iPhone camera bump since September 2019 when the iPhone 11 debuted.

The iPhone 11's square camera module was a marked shift from previous models, which featured a more traditional vertical camera layout. Apple's decision to switch to a square design was mainly driven by the need to accommodate a third camera in the form of a new Ultra Wide lens, along with improved sensors and optics. The introduction of the square bump set a new aesthetic standard for subsequent models, influencing the design of later releases right up to today's iPhone 16.

Commenting on the rumor, Ice Universe, another well-known Weibo-based leaker, noted that such an external change would require the internal structural design to undergo a "major overhaul — much like redesigning the layout of an old house," that would require a significant amount of time for validation. "Would Apple really take such an aggressive approach?" they added.

As always, the look of the devices is based on scraps of information at this point, and Apple's plans could always change. Regardless, what do you think of the rumored new redesign for the iPhone 17 Pro models? Let us know in the comments.

I’m sure we’ll see an iPhone with a triangular shape from the side pretty soon. Like MacBook Air. In the current design, camera bumps are in fact no-battery holes. Triangular allows Apple to strike a balance between size, power and camera quality

I am not sure if Apple would follow this awkwardly looking ugly design in 17 series. Google Pixel design is much more seamless looking aesthetically. iPhones are running out of ideas wrt to design and features. People are very slow in upgrading because Apple is pulling the plug on materials, premium hardware (Storage For example) and going cheaper (5G Modem) with components etc….

If true, it is a drastic change to the iPhone design. I don't mind the change. Still think it will have a Titanium frame. Would love to see some nice new colour next year.

I call fake. Apple just went from perpendicular back to vertical for the iPhone 16 cameras, to enable compatibility with Vision Pro.

1. That’s ugly. I’d rather Samsung style if anything.
2. Crazy idea, but let’s make the phone thicker to accommodate the camera depth and add good features in the extra space. Bigger battery and better cooling namely. Boom. No more bump. The Air model can have a smaller, more basic camera with a bump.
The only crazy part of that idea is that it has been suggested on every page of this thread. Thick phone equals inefficient design in my view.

The new camera design renderings look terrible IMO. I'd be happy with the camera arrangement left as it is - or a vertical [portrait] arrangement if needed - certainly not horizontal, which I feel would make natural handholding in landscape more awkward so as to not cover the lens.

People have been voting with their wallets and favouring phones with larger displays for a while now.

This line always sounds so logical when slung. Of course, it ignores the concept that if there is no ALT candidate in the race, there’s no fair contest to evaluate.

If the only iPhone “next” for sale was shaped like a star, people wanting or addicted to iPhone would soon own a star-shaped phone. They wouldn’t be voting with their wallet if iPhone Star is the only one for sale. I detest a number of changes to iDevices over the years… but put up with them because I want the whole more than switching. That’s NOT voting FOR what I want in an iDevice but begrudgingly putting up with negative changes vs. switching entirely.

Detested dictators of select countries often win 9X% of the illusion of voting in those countries. Is that really will of the people or the only choice available to them? I suspect if such elections were forced fair, the dictator would not be re-elected.

Back when Apple clung to 4” screens as “perfect,” 100% of the iPhone wallet “vote” was for 4” screen phones. Bigger screen phones were universally ridiculed by the iPhone crowd. Then Apple abandoned the “perfect” for phablets themselves and the only choice of iPhone was iPhone phablet. 100% of the wallet “vote” immediately swung to bigger-screen iPhone. Does that mean that no “voter” believed in 4” perfection after all? Or the only iPhone choice for which to “vote” was now a phablet iPhone, so a new dictator coup was successful… and now the people shall overwhelmingly love this one?
