You'd think Samsung would try to be as little like Apple as possible so no one for even a second would question whether they're copying.

Well they called it Wallet, so that's not copying, they used easily and commonly identifiable symbols like planes, movies, etc. So is only so many ways to develop the same thing. I find it a joke that Apple simply tweaks an existing design and calls it "All New", the iP5 is NOT all new, its taller and thinner but not magically new.

You need retailers, event sites, etc, to be on board using NFC and frankly its not something the US is doing because the US carriers block it. The lack of NFC in the US has NOTHING to do with whether or not Apple uses it, the carriers do not want it unless they can control it. Verizon is being sued for blocking Google Wallet and their excuse is invalid on its merits given that Google Wallet and ISIS use the same secure section of Android. ISIS will never grow beyond its feeble crib because American's don't want to lose control of their credit cards, don't trust carriers with their purchases, I know I don't.

What would be beneficial is if the various CC companies worked together to create a common system as we have today with POS so we could actually use NFC enabled phones. But that won't happen either.

Good artists copy; great artists steal...
I don't think you understand the meaning of the quote. If you are good at copying, it is still just an obvious copy but if you "steal" something, people will forget that yours was not the original because you did a much better job at implementing it than the other guy.

It's pretty obvious, but that's a conversation for another thread.

Already too far off topic.

No, its not a racist saying. It has nothing to do with race. Its called a "Colour Idiom" White in Britain is the colour associated with purity and innocence. Thats why wedding dresses are conventionally white.

Heres a little lesson on "Colour Idioms" from the BBC so next time you don't make a fool of yourself by calling someone racist.

Samsung lost that infringement suit with Apple because their tablet and phone products were so similar. The jury awarded them almost a billion in damages. Any reasonable person can see that Samsung was copying Apple. Hence the Jury made that ruling.

Apple should copy Samsung and vice versa but don't steal and idea when you could pay a royalty for it and keep everything honest.

Thats the only case Apple won, all other countries found in Samsungs favour. That case will be re-tried as it had issues with jury.

Oh look... The innovators are back... good going samsung... Nice innovation, new market development and brilliant differentiation...

Good artists copy; great artists steal...

I always thought samsung were "Great" well you prove they are jut "good"...

Well they called it Wallet, so that's not copying, they used easily and commonly identifiable symbols like planes, movies, etc.

Ever heard of Google Wallet? No one ever said that Samsung only copies Apple.

So is only so many ways to develop the same thing.

There's a difference between coincidentally ending up with similar designs and starting with the same design and tweaking it so it's not an exact replica. Samsung did the latter.

I find it a joke that Apple simply tweaks an existing design and calls it "All New", the iP5 is NOT all new, its taller and thinner but not magically new.

The case construction and materials are all new, the internals are all new. Where's the problem? "All new" is a common marketing term, and in the case of the iPhone 5, it's true anyway. The appearance may be similar, but the phone itself is completely different.

----------

And so is Apple, really.

When has Apple ever shown shame for anything? When have they been anything less than brazen?

There's no point in continuing this discussion. No point in reasoning with with those who can't be reasoned with.

That's the important part. Samsung is brazen and shameless in their copying.

And they get sued for billions. And they lose.

But it's worth it (for them) because they've crushed all other Android handset makers.
Samsung's total marketing budget for 2012 was $12 billion.
What's $1.05 billion in damages compared to that? Not much.

Samsung’s sky-high marketing budget may be crimping its smartphones’ profitability:

While people get themselves wound up on these forums ( and its good entertainment btw ) , the average consumer doesn't really give two hoots.

Keep ripping on passbook - Until it works and people want to use it!

Care to share an example of an iOS feature that started off terrible and actually became decent? (Genuinely want to know)

So far I've got 3 terrible ones that havent improved at all:

- Passbook
- Siri
- Maps

I'm glad Samsung is doing this. Passbook is a much more elegant solution to quick purchasing and card storage over crappy insecure NFC.

Apple, please don't sue Samsung. For once, let's actually try go get a standard created.

U know who cares?

The passbook app is mostly garbage.

I actually used it all the time when I had the iphone5...it is really good for movies and starbucks b.c it actually scans. It seems like they never work from inside the apps.

I use it at Starbucks and I don't like how it's not instant updates on balance or here is the breakdown of your order.

It's pretty basic.

Movies ? I don't go to those but that's nice. Do you use Siri for movie purchases too which seems really dumb?

Apps for Passbook in the UK store - still five. No new ones launched since Starbucks.

Of those five two are American airlines with no significant UK presence.

Obviously it's down to the devs to build these for their clients. I looked into it, it's fairly easy to do using Apple's Passbook API. However, get this - each client I would like to build Passbook integration for needs their own Apple Developer account. If a company was to churn these out for lots of clients, it would be a logistical nightmare for something so mundane. This type of hurdle is surely stifling wider adoption for the smaller businesses.

For my money we need an open API with cross-platform support, i.e, an HTML5 solution. Proprietary things, such as apps, work (for now) as there is a real reason to jump through hoops... revenue and exposure from App store eco-systems, but this type of thing really needs to be open.

Regarding the article, I laughed when I read it. Samsung just have no shame. Innovate you prideless idiots!

Hyperbole is hyperbole.

They didn't get sued for billions. Slightly over 1 billion.

And here's an interesting tidbit. They haven't paid a dime to date. And in fact - in every case except in the US - Samsung won.

Many tech companies get sued for billions.

I agree that Samsung's biggest "reward" has been crushing the Android competition. That might actually be Google's and Android's downfall if Samsung converts their users to Tizen or something else.
