I think I've cracked it

So, my new theory is why pay for advertising when you can get it done free? Every time Samsung "copies" Apple (which I believe they do), articles like this get published all across the web about how Samsung cannot innovate but rather following. Hundred of sites run these kind of articles with nearly the same title and how much do they pay for all these Fanboy sites to put them on blast... 0. And now how many of us are aware of a new feature a SAMSUNG phone, listed on an Apple site, that we would never have known or cared about before? Almost all of us because God only knows I have never been to the Samsung website ever. Just my two cents since.

Sales are the reason Apple stays in this gig.

If there was any decline in iToy sales I'm might be inclined to agree with the next assertion. Please remember a person my have an emotion attachment to something but a company doesn't.

ahhh. ok. no point continuing this conversation.

I'm sorry, but Android didn't invent the concept of tabbed browsing, maps, and other stuff. And Apple cannot copy something from android, that Google didn't invent.

Put it simply, tabbed browsing was there for years on mac before it came on iOS. And maps? Maps were present for centuries before android had them. That proved nothing.

And if you're playing the game of "he copied something that android didn't invent", then we can safely assume that android copied Apple in touch keyboards, multitouch + gestures, navigation bars, inertia scrolling, autocorrect, and so on and so on.

I can apply your flawed logic and say that iOS had all of these before Android, even clearly when Apple didn't invent these features. Same principles apply.

Going by your logic, Apple didnt invent the idea of an e-wallet, as I was able to keep my cards and tickets in my actual wallet in my pocket!

Did I really need to write "on a mobile device" after all my points?

See what you did there? All you did was make a nonsensical comment.

Apples icon? Cards in a wallet.
Samsungs icon? Cards in a wallet.

Passbook was already in a wallet. What did Samsung do differently again?

So all of this whining is about an icon? If they just changed the icon, they'd be golden?

For sure. When is Apple going to get on the ball and actually do something with PB anyway?

This is the interesting part... the part the Samsung copied was Apple decision to include a KeyRing-like app on it's phones (the Key ring is not new, it's the decision to include it with the phone). It's Samsung typical "fast-follower" model, which is frowned upon in North America, but well accepted, acknowledged and even envied in Asia.

As mention above, what will Apple do with it? How will it monetize, bring it to market, and evolve a business model around it. This can take different initial directions... passes, payments, coupons, etc. And also the go to market strategy is part of solution (by creating new relationships, or partnership with existing services like credit card companies).

Samsung, today, can develop it's own direction and model, but hasn't yet (arguably, neither has Apple)... although it seems like by naming it "Wallet" it's taking a mobile payment direction, but still haven't indicated how it bring it to market.

If the past is an indicator, Samsung will take a "fast-follower" approach, and wait for someone (Google/Apple) to lead the way or even wait for someone to *prove* (not just formulate) a successful model first.

.

All the frustration from people knowing that Samsung will do it better then Apple. ;)

Below are a selection of features first showcased on Android, before shortly being added to ios.

Notification Center
Apple Maps
Facebook intergration
Launching apps from lock screen
Tabbed browsing
etc etc

All manufactures share ideas. Why everyone thinks Apple is whiter then white is beyond me.

There is no Apple Maps on Android.
There is no tabbed browsing on iOS in general, also tabbed browsing is a standard that has been established for years on normal browsers and is in no way a comparison to a standalone app that brings real functionality to the device.

I meant Google Maps was available on Android and then Apple created Apple Maps.

Tabbed browsing has been available on Android since the Gingerbread days. Apple then "borrowed" the idea.

Apple didn't invent that idea, because ewallets were there a long time ago!

Google didn't invent maps for mobile phones. And neither did they invent tabbed browsing, as I said. iOS also had windowed browsing. Tabbed browsing is the same concept, only much quicker.

They copied the app too. I commented on the icon, because it was relevant to your wallet comment. The descriptions for Passbook and Wallet are identical, as is the functionality, and the name came from Google.

The "whining" is about Samsung's long history of shameless copying.

It makes me laugh really hard that this doesn't use NFC. I guess they finally realised that it's a useless technology, except for sharing homemade porn.

These are the only messages I've got from samsung adverts:
1. Buy the S3 because you're a blind sheep.
2. Buy the S3 because of a few gimmicky novelty features we've added, that **** up the upgrade process.
3. Buy the S3 as its perfect for sharing homemade porn.

Samsung are really lacking in their adverts. They seem to be going in completely the wrong direction for their ads.

Apple wasn't the first e-wallet and certainly wont be the last. Why so many people are getting worked up is beyond me. So its ok for Apple to "copy" ideas from android, but as soon as its the other way round theres uproar!

Some of the comments in this thread really show a complete lack of intelligence.

Copying the style of power adapter and packaging? Oh come on....

Copying is fine Dave, but pay the appropriate royalties, licenses or fees.

Don't just copy someones's work and then try to profit from it without giving them something in return.

That is anti-capitalistic.

How have they copied though? They have created a similar functioning app, just as Apple created Apple Maps after many years of Google Maps.

so whats the excuse this time samsung

even google wont be pleased with you guys

just look at how low you brought the android world

and then you say iOS aint superior :p

no NFC , seriously or is it because passbook dont do that

And Apple has copied from apps as well.

All companies copy to some extent.

I agree.

Or:
Buy the GS3 because the headphone jack is on the bottom of the iPhone 5.

Here's what I find amusing about this though.

Yes - they copied.

But who friggin really cares? How does this affect (you) personally? Just something to gripe about on a forum?

Yes - they copied Apple's passbook idea. I hardly find the feature revolutionary in the first place. I know that many venues for years have been using tickets you can print at home and can be scanned. This is really just an electronic version of that.

Big deal.

At the end of the day - it's only going to help Apple anyway. Why? Because the more businesses that get on board with the idea the better. And that will happen with more than one player in the marketplace.

There's probably more "good" than "bad" from this copying as an end result. Which can't be said about other things.

I have to agree completely. I found Passbook to be useless, requiring you to carry all of the individual apps for the merchants on your phone was a waste of space. The airlines I needed weren't on it, I just found it to be a meh "feature" on iOS 6 and when you add the fiasco that is Apple Maps in iOS 6 I just see how Apple has fallen behind.

How have they copied though? They have created a similar functioning app, just as Apple created Apple Maps after many years of Google Maps.

Samsung lost that infringement suit with Apple because their tablet and phone products were so similar. The jury awarded them almost a billion in damages. Any reasonable person can see that Samsung was copying Apple. Hence the Jury made that ruling.

Apple should copy Samsung and vice versa but don't steal and idea when you could pay a royalty for it and keep everything honest.
