In anticipation of my new mbp..how does one create a recovery dvd if lion is already installed on your machine?

I thought Mac App Store purchases were tied to Apple ID accounts? If I do this and install it somewhere else will that other computer have my Apple ID account information?

In this case you are using the image of Lion OS X which you have downloaded once from the Mac app store.
You have to create an Apple ID while downloading OS X Lion from App store and now we are using just image of that OS X Lion and so all image would be associated the same Apple ID.

oh this conversation more reliable..........thanks guys i got some info no need to ask question.........

I GOT LOST somewhere in your steps

I followed your step-by-step, but after download was complete I searched my hard drive, but could not find the Lion Install file so I could right-click on it for your next step. I looked in the Download folder and Desktop, and did a search using 10.7 and Lion. Nope. Then I thought maybe I should click on the window that opened with a picture of a Lion and had an arrow to click saying: Install. Nope, that took me right into the automatic install process. I'd still like to make a DVD copy to keep in a safe place (even though I used Monday's release of Lion Recovery Assistant to put a copy of Lion on part of an external HD). Help please.

I am in the same boat here, I have downloaded a new copy of lion, but can't find it anywhere. I know if I press continue it will just install again so can someone tell me where on the drive it is so I can burn it to DVD.
I am on a new Imac

Creating a boot disk from already installed Lion OS X?

Good evening guys,

Sorry in advance if this has been asked and answered already. Relativly new to the MAC world.

I have downloaded and installed Lion already, how can I create a boot disk?

Cheers for any help. :)

Umm.. it explains it step by step in the original post.

LION boot disk

I can not see where it gives instructions on how to make a boot disk of Lion once the Lion OSX is installed. (running now)

I can not find the Lion Installer file.

Cheers.

You need to make the disc BEFORE you install Lion because Lion deletes the install file once it is complete.

Download Lion once again by opening the app store and then pressing option while clicking the purchased button.

I'm so nice that I will spoon feed it to you:

- Once Lion is released, purchase and download it from the Mac App Store.

- Locate the OS X Lion installer and right-click on it. Select 'Show Package Contents'.

- Inside the 'Contents' folder, there is a 'SharedSupport' folder. Inside that is the Lion Installer. It's called 'InstallESD.dmg".

- Copy 'InstallESD.dmg' to the Desktop by clicking and dragging it while holding down the Option-key. You should see a little green plus icon if you did it right.

- Open Disk Utility. Head to the Go menu in the Finder and select 'Utilities'. Disk Utility should be in there.

- Click the burn button.

- Select 'InstallESD.dmg' from the Desktop, insert a blank 4.7GB DVD and wait. Once it's finished, you'll have a shiny new Lion install DVD.

You can now install Lion on whatever machines you like, just as if you'd purchased the install disc from your local Apple Store. Lion is expected to launch on the Mac App Store this week.

Did some experimenting tonight. I made a backup in Time Machine before attempting anything here.

I tried going back to SL with my SL DVD and was able to of course. I did not have a backup on my MB of SL prior to upgrading to Lion. Trying to restore my Lion backup to SL is not possible and you get a warning saying so.

I then tried using my SL boot disc that I made from reading this thread and it too failed after attempting to download files and giving me the warning that it was not able to do so, same thing happens when trying to use the boot disc to do an upgrade.

I then just went back and restored my Lion backup that I made prior to trying any of this. I can now throw my Lion boot disc away, it is worthless.

Updating

Once you have used the bootable disk to install Lion on a computer, how do you receive the upgrades? Do you do it through the app store?

Regardless of installation method all updates are done the traditional way, through Software Update.

Ok. The computer that I downloaded it from is telling me that there is an update available when I launch the App Store, but the computer I installed it on from the bootable disk says it has no system updates available through Software Update.

Are you running 10.7 or 10.7.1? If you made your install disk from a recent OS download, you could already be running 10.7.1.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_5 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8L1 Safari/6533.18.5)

I just read this entire thread and every single question on here was answered early in the original post.
*The original floppy comment was by far the best. You can not one up it. :)
Thanks everyone for the tips. A clean install of Lion (after already having updated to Lion) worked perfectly from a 5g USB drive partition.
