Please insert this disk labeled 21,554 to complete the installation. Disk read error setup cannot continue please insert disk 1 to restart the installation process LOL.

LMAO. I remember buying programs that required 15 or more 3.5" floppy disks.

Can you do this on an SD Card or external HDD? (therefore useful for an Air)

If it's in your dock, just right click and select "open in finder".
If it's not in your dock, check your applications folder.
If it's not in there, try searching for it in spotlight.

Tried all these and it's not showing up anywhere. After it downloaded it launched and I did the update install and now it's gone. I would like to burn a DVD so I can do a clean install. If I go to the App Store and try to download it again nothing happens. It just says Installed.

EDIT: Apparently once you install Lion the installer self destructs and once you are running Lion you cannot re-download it. So I'll have to re-install Snow Leopard just to re-download Lion and create a installer DVD. Yeah, this is all so much better than physical media. Had I known about the USB key coming out I would have waited.

EDIT2: It appears you can download it again from the App Store *if* you hold down the OPTION key when clicking on Purchases at which point it says INSTALL instead of INSTALLED.

I am in a similar situation myself. I intend to download (but not install) by logging into the App Store another Mac, copy the .dmg file and burn it to a DVD, put it in a box, and keep it on the shelf next to my Snow Leopard one, should I need it. A clean install of Lion is tempting now I have that option...

Just found out you can download it again from the App Store *if* you hold down the OPTION key when clicking on Purchases at which point it says INSTALL instead of INSTALLED. I'm testing it now but it seems to be downloading.

The other thing to note, is you need to do this before you install Lion.

Hi, are you sure I can download another copy of Lion for free...? I've see that I have to make this pressing the button alt in the App Store; than entering Apple id and password...

(sorry for my english)

All I get is a message :
A newer version of this app is already installed on this computer.
If you want to replace it with this version, move the existing app to the trash.

what do I do now to get the dmg image

Sorry, a little slow. You not only have to hold down the "Option" key to GET the buy button again from the purchased section in app store, but you have to hold it down a second time when you click buy in order to get the prompt that you have already purchased are you sure you want to DL again for free. Doing this will bypass the version message you are seeing.

Yes. I put mine on a regular desktop hard drive that I put into an enclosure. So This hard drive is bootable and installs OSX Lion!

sorry, i mean if i can put the install file on a pen drive instead of a dvd. not that i install lion on a removabile device

Hey guys,

I've just done a clean install using the disc method. Works perfectly and feels much faster as well :)

definitely recommend this to everyone

That worked this time!!!!!! Thanks

YO cadillac1234, if you go back to the app store, click on purchases, hold option key and click on the osx lion it WILL let you re download free of charge....don't feel bad i pulled the same stunt and spent an hour figuring it out

For me when I go to the Lion page (holding option key and click...), the button says “Buy”, when I click it, the label changes to $ 29,99. Do I need to pay it again?

Faster than SL or faster than if you had installed Lion through the update process rather than clean install?

You will not have to pay again. When you click it, you will get a prompt stating that you have it already and it will ask are you sure you want to download it for free. I was a little hesitant on it as well but was able to download it again for free.

What I was attempting to do was install it on a spare hdd to see if I could do a clean install from a disk

A disk was giving me issues but when I put it on a flash drive, that worked no problem

Good to hear. Yes, something about burning a DVD makes this fail when using the DVD copy to upgrade from within SL. I've heard the DVD will work when installing onto a blank HD.

This worked for me.
cheers

dmg file not deleted

I find the InstallESD.dmg file just moved to another directory /Mac OS X Install Data

This directory also contains an install log file. I don't know if this is also the case for other people.

The other thing to note, is you need to do this before you install Lion.

Lion deletes the installer after you install it. so you'll have to download it again (free) if you wanted to burn the disc later

arn

edit: yep, fixed to avoid confusion

Looked through the thread and couldn't find the info. I have already installed Lion through the app store and came across this thread afterwards. I am trying to save the DMG file to my external hard drive, but I cannot locate it within finder.

Has anyone experienced this as well or can help?

You obviously didn't look through this thread very well, because this has been discussed on this very page.
