In any case, the Xserve is now running Leopard just fine-installed from the USB drive using TDM via a Powerbook.

Incidentally, I'd like to know what Apple's thinking was with regard to the port placement on the Xserve. The back has 2xUSB and 2x Firewire 800, and there's one FW400 on the front. The FW400 is all good and well(it's what I used for the TDM install, since the only FW800 cables I have are about 2 feet long, and I have a 6 foot FW400 cable), but a USB port on the front would have been really nice.

Of course, with it sitting on the floor, port access isn't really a problem, but if were in a rack having to get around to the back to get to a USB port(whether for installing software or connecting a KB/Mouse) would be a pain.

The Xserve now has a functioning Superdrive-courtesy of a parts Powerbook-and I also have a copy of Leopard Server. I had to-relatively speaking-pay through the nose for the latter(I dickered with an Ebay seller and got him down to $90), but at least I have it. Fortunately, the seller of my copy of Leopard Server was smart enough to show that the serial card was included, but covered the serial number on it.

I also have two sleds on the way.

I had a 1TB Seagate external that I'd bought on clearance at Office Depot a while back but hadn't opened. The enclosure died within a few hours of my plugging it in, but I think the drive is still good. I'll probably break it down and put the drive in the Xserve. I have another enterprise-class 750gb SATA drive that's currently in an IBM SystemX Sled that I may break down also, since I have more than enough SAS drives to keep my SystemX stuff happy(and may be able to make a few buck on the empty IBM sled on Ebay).

You bought Leopard for $90?! WAAAT?! ARE YOU CRAZY? $90?!!! x_x

Server, big difference.

yeah but still!! Leopard Server isn't much different at all. Even the newest OS X server is cheaper than that!!

You could've used Linux for a server. Even better than the obsolete Leopard Server... for $90!!!!/

My money, my decisions

Your money, your decisions.

This was from the era when there was actually a significant difference between the server version and non-server version of OS X.

Find me a cheaper one-especially one with the serials

They occasionally sell for a little bit less at auction, but usually not much less.

Well then don't get Leopard Server! Is it really worth $90?! It's just Leopard with some server stuff on top! You can use Linux and it's free!

Like I said, spend your money how you want, I'll spend mine how I want. There's really nothing to argue about here.

Yes of course it's your money but I just thought that was quite absurd! $90! What's in Leopard server that makes it worth so damn much?

I just looked on ebay for Leopard server and OH MY GOD!!! $200-$600!!! O-O Yours is NOTHING compared to that! My GOD WHY is it so expensive?!?!? X_x
They're more expensive than the computers they would run on!

$90 for Leopard Server with a serial is a pretty good price!

Considering that a year or so ago Leopard client was going for anywhere from $120-200.

I second your decision to stick with Leopard Server.
