It's me again! I only said I'd post a lot less, I didn't say I was leaving completely... (and if I did, I had a newer statement saying I would occasionally post)

I'm finally making the big PowerPC to Intel switch. I'll be using my iMac C2D with an external display and I'm buying a black MacBook soon. Snow Leopard is going to be my OS. I'm selling all PPC Macs that have no real meaning to me, meaning the collectables (iMac G4 and Clamshell) and my first Mac ever (iBook G4) stay. My G5 may have to stay too if I can't find anyone who will buy it (obviously I'll have to use Craigslist, shipping that thing would be a lot of trouble). New setup: iMac C2D, black MacBook, iPad mini 1, iPhone 3GS.

For those of you who have made this switch in your daily drivers, what was your experience like? What were problems you had? I look forward to hearing your thoughts, and it may be fun for some of us to share our experiences.

And, my main question: what's the best browser for Snow Leopard? :p

I haven't made the switch. I supplemented, but my MBP is not my daily use Mac.

In any case, when I got the MBP I cloned my PowerBook hard drive to the MBP. That gave me Leopard right away. I had Snow Leopard, but I wanted to upgrade from Leopard so everything transferred versus installing and then trying to move stuff over.

Worked fairly well.

You're going to be limited to some older versions of Chrome and Firefox but nothing too bad yet. It is rumored that someone is working on a TenSixFox which would function like T4Fx but under SL.

You'll have access to a few other browsers that won't run on PowerPC Macs such as Rockmelt (dead and buried) and so forth.

Almost anything that will run under Leopard will run on SL. The Adobe Creative Suite is limited to CS5. CS6 requires additional specs.

Finally, you can run real Windows on your Mac. There's a little finessing, but you can get Windows 7 on it if you want.

I'm just happy you aren't leaving.

The more people here, the better. Especially the ones with PPC knowledge.

Oh, the question? I got nothing. Sorry.

I kinda am. My posting amount will go way down. But I'll still post around here every once in awhile.

eyoungren, I have a reply to your post, but I can't type it now (I'm on my iPad). Tomorrow! :D

Yeah, but you still won't be gone. That's what matters.

And why are you disengaging, anyway? That's dumb! This is a great place here!

Anarchy!

Because of some certain users...

Screw them.

You should not let a couple saps drive you away when you are an asset to any forum community here, which you are.

And, that Tiger Sierra theme looked great. I doubt anyone's going to continue that themselves.

Also, doesn't Apple itself parade around the positivity of diversity and it's effects? Diversity essentially means more people.

Remember, we're all here for the same purpose and driving goal. To make all of our old Macs as useful as possible. To squeeze the very last bit of juice out of them until they're totally finished.

And (Assuming most of us here are American), to quote Barack Obama on his last days as president: "We're not Democrats first. We're not Republicans first. We're Americans first. We're all on the same team."

We're all Mac people first. We're all on the Apple train, and a colossal chunk of us want the same thing for our company. And a whole lot of us are still rocking the racer known as the PowerPC architecture.

And that's what really matters.

You should not let a couple saps drive you away when you are an asset to the PPC community especially. Like I said, every little bit helps.
They aren't saps. They have a disagreement with OP.

The kinds of things people argue over in an internet forum that attract the mods which has posts deleted and threads moved to the wasteland.

Like this one is in danger of becoming…

@AmazingHenry: By the way, my theme mods for Leopard also work in Snow Leopard. But XtraFinder also works in SL too so I get genuine black backgrounds on my folders!

I doubt a few posts will warrant a delete of the entire thread.

Let me do my job, please. You don't comfort somebody while being politically correct.

Don't expect too much from a BlackBook, these things run hot as hell and the keyboard is crap. But I like the speakers, that's a nice design to put them on the back against the display.
As for browers I use Firefox 45esr, Google Chrome and Roccat. FF is very stable and doesn't use too much resources, Chrome is really good with all types of video and Roccat is just damn fast.

Alright, get ready for a long post replying to almost
everything everybody's typed... feel free to skip to your quote and only read that. But before you do: please don't let this thread get turned into one that must be wastelanded. I'm asking for advice (as @GoopnyPants and @eyoungren have so kindly given), not your opinion on my forum situation.

Thanks for all this! Cloning the hard drive is a good idea, but I'll probably use the migration assistant as it has the option to not transfer apps, and most of my apps have newer versions for SL.

I'm pretty sure Firefox 48 will work fine; nobody's complained about TFF45 yet! Thanks for letting me know about TenSixFox though! I hate Chrome, so that's not happening. Waterfox (suggested by @GoopnyPants) sounds like the best option at the moment though as my iMac and MacBook I'm planning to buy are 64-bit.

Windows? LOL! The reason I use Macs is OS X. Otherwise I'd be using Linux. But thanks anyway. ;)

I agree with almost everything. And as the people who drove me out of here in the first place aren't coming back and posting often, I'll probably go back to posting as usual. However, I won't have as much to post about as half of my PPCs are leaving!

Great! That'll look great with the BlackBook! Can the window titles by white also?

Well, I'm getting the newer Core 2 Duo version... maybe Apple fixed these issues? FF is likely what I'll be using.
If you want something update, I would suggest you Waterfox, a browser based on the latest version of firefox (54), adapted to run on OS X 10.5+ with a 64 bit processor.
It works quite well on my 17" iMac C2D (os x lion)
Thanks! As said above, both my Intels will be C2D, so this will work great!

Good to know.

This is why I love this place, now I know about something called WaterFox and TenSixFox. I've been looking for a browser for Snow Leopard as well and suffice to say, I haven't been disappointed, even in my first month!

Thanks, people!

…and TenSixFox.
Just keep in mind that this is very early on. Cameron Kaiser mentioned it briefly and how far along that dev is doing it is anyone's guess. I can't even find what Kaiser mentions using Google and he didn't post a link.

So, who knows how long it will take, if it even comes to pass.

It's led by Dr. Kaiser? Wow.

What's important is that it (supposedly) exists. No matter how long that takes.

No, no. He just mentioned that someone was doing it on his blog. Sorry to be confusing.

But yes, the fact that there is someone at least considering it is good news.

I read the posts and articles concerning it, and apparently it doesn't actually exist as of now. It was only theorized about, and nobody is actually doing it.

I think the PowerPC only has the rest of the decade to live.

Slightly into the 20's with Linux.

'Tis a sad day of realization for me. :(

Nah. Leopard-WebKit will continue to be updated until Apple completely reworks Safari and the WebKit framework. Which shouldn't be for awhile.

Yeah, but it's worse than stock Safari 5.0.6. It's slower, has less ability to feed playback like YouTube, is more resource demanding, is just as stable as Safari 5.0.6 -which isn't good-, and it has rabies.

TFF is the only option for Leopard. And it's only going to continue for as long as Dr. Kaiser uses it, while he calls his glorious job of giving life to dead machines "nuts" and "certifiably insane". Meanwhile, Ubuntu 17.10 will supposedly be the last version of Ubuntu for PPC, while Debian is halting PPC support around the same time.

*sigh*
What? I've never had these problems. Are you using an outdated version? Cause for me, LWK is fast, stable, and plays YT nicely.

Because of some certain users...

AHenry,
I apologize if I'm wrong, but you sound as if you're fairly young. With increasing age comes experience of life, and that brings a realization that it doesn't matter what others think of you, do what you think is right. I'm 72 so believe me I know what I'm talking about!
The old saying is, 'Don't cut off your nose to spite your face'. This being an expression used to describe a needlessly self-destructive over-reaction to a problem.
Post here as frequently or as infrequently as you feel the need (I would prefer the former), but don't apologize for your actions, or feel you have to justify them.
Keep 'em coming.
