I would jump all over one of the new machines. It is one of those
big jumps up to a new "plateau." Get the hi rez screen too.

I tried to stay away but couldn't.... Maybe this is part of americas economic problem? Too much money on little things that strap their citizens budgets and not enough focus on the things that could actually help pull it out of recession?

Buy the MBP it's a great computer plus the tanked dollar is great for me right now as my money goes much further in exchange deals;)

I have a MBP ('10 15in 2.66 i7 w/ 8 gigs of ram) It works great no problem at all. But I feel like I am compelled to upgrade. I have never seen a bump in geekbench scores like this. Almost double for some.

I am asking all those who are going to NOT upgrade to convince me why I should not upgrade as well.

Apple products are one of the few things in my life that I am always motivated to have the latest and greatest. No rhyme or reason to upgrading other than having the newest toy but this one is just killing me.

Okay someone talk me off the ledge.

For most people the upgrade isn't really worth it. Me included, but it the specs definitely still make me dream of a brand new MBP :p. After being awed and amazed by the benchmark scores, I calmed down and thought about it for a few minutes...

Quad core? - I barely even use the dual core to its fullest extent. I do transcode videos from time to time, but seriously not worth it for the few times I do this (2-3 times a year before a vacation/trip).

GPU? - I can already play SC2 with mid-high specs and Diablo3 will for sure be playable. Medium graphics aren't gonna kill me. Minecraft is fun too, but I don't think I need a graphics card bump to play this haha.

Thunderbolt? - I'm not sure if i'd ever use this...

So what it seems like it boils down to is...
1) If the MBP won't play the games you want it to, then upgrade.
2) If you do lots of video editing, then upgrade.

This time next year you'll be lusting over the new one anyways. Don't buy it. In a month you won't even care nor notice the person next to you has a quad core in his MBP. Buy an SSD and enjoy your MBP for another year or two.

Release your inner pre-pubescent pimply geek! Spend as much of your parents' money as you can, because it's also yours, and to let them know you've come to age! Be the spoiled annoying little brat - Paris Hilton BFF wannabe - that you always wanted to be... while you still can!

[does it work?]

Bro, I am too very tempted and I got the same MBP as you. But frankly the 2010 model is just fine for my needs at the moment, it does everything I want fast enough plus it can play most pc games I play on medium settings (Starcraft II). I usually play on a console anyway. There's will be an other CPU down the pipeline plus LION. So chill out for a year with your "lesser" 2010 MBP and save up for the next update with LION.
I too was very very veeeery tempted to upgrade, since the CPU is better, finally it has got a decent GPU in the 15" 17" models.
But you know even if you upgrade you'll probably feel the urge again the same time next year.
You're MBP will just do fine for the next 2 years. You'll feel better next week when the new macbooks are old news again. Fight the urge bro! I know it's hard.

pfft i have an early '08 MBP and am still on the fence about finally upgrading after 3 years. I probably wont. And its about being practical/logical, not money.

Have some freaking self control.

im getting the SSD and the RAM upgrade, and waiting it out for the next upgrade. Then I'll transfer the SSD and the ram to the new machine.

This was a great thread to read. This is what I have decided.

I am keeping this MBP until the late 2011 or 2012 models come out. I am upgrading to a SSD and will prohibit myself from reading anymore reviews of the latest and greatest on the MBP 2011.

Enjoy your new dream machines to all of those who have jumped on board and now the only thing to do is wait for the Ipad two.....LOLOLOL

FYI: I am not a spoiled brat, I truly understand the value of a dollar and I realize how crazy it is to upgrade my computer (Apple) hardware as often as I do. That is why I truly appreciate the rational comments referenced in this thread.

Cheers!

If you have money for the high end 15" or the 17" you should do it! As it is quite a difference from your current machine.

Hi all! I have a 15" 2010 2.66 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 8 GB of RAM. Would I notice much difference upgrading to the newer one? (it's a HR anti glare) - presumably they still offer that option?

I have a dilemma, the wife wants a MBP after she's played with mine a few times. I promised her a new one when Apple released this years models. Since she's not a geek, she wants mine, and for me to buy the newer one for myself.

This is very upsetting, because now I have to decide between the 13" which I really love the size, or the higher end 15" model to "future" proof it until next year. Decisions, decisions???

Drats!!!

This one is a slow pitch inside (too easy) buy the 15' inch and enjoy. You won't regret it. The size difference when traveling is not that big of a deal but the screen real estate is and you will love that.

Do It!
Doooooo eeeeet! :)

I myself will replace my aging Late 08 Unibody 2.8 with one of these puppies in about a month (to ensure this whole intel sata issue is gone for good)

Dont' do it.

Just remember the following:
- The late 2011 and 2012 Macbook Pros are going to be atleast 5x faster than what was just released.
- Lower Price.
-Thiner profile.
- Lightpeak (optical)
- SSD standard
- Retina IPS Display

etc.

For the first time since I got my '08 Aluminium MacBook I'm seriously considering upgrading to the high-end 13" MBP. I know people are whinging about graphics but it will certainly be better than my 9400M.

Good decision!

Get a grip. Don't buy a marginal upgrade.

Learn that impulse buys will drain your ability to accumulate wealth.

It's just a computer. Why give _your_ money away?

Just got my 15" Sandy Bridge MBP!!! HUGE difference from the 2010 models, I think everyone should run out and get one. Scores over 9,000 on geekbench compared to about 5700 for the last gen models.

At least 5x? How is that possible when these new ones are only slightly less than 3X as fast as my Late 08 2.8?
It won't be a lower price, it'll be about the same for more speed
If there is a redesign it'll be thinner, but no guarantee of a redesign
The current Thunderbolt is compatible with the optical Lightpeak when it comes out (with a dongle?)
SSD won't be standard anytime soon, with the price per Gb the way it is. Unless they want all their MBPs to be astronomically expensive (more so than they already are)
IPS display would be nice, Retina, not sure about that. Imagine the graphics horsepower it would take to run a superhigh resolution 17" screen. For games.

Remember, this isn't just a small upgrade from previous generation, its a significant step up if you are doing tasks that can take advantage of the 4 cores.

All this stuff I've read about Steve Jobs in the last few weeks has made me realize that I can't take it with me when I die, and as rich as Steve is, he can't take it with him either. Might as well enjoy it while I still can.

Ebay your 2010 MBP and get the new one. If benchmarks are making you want a new one then you probably need a new one too, for your own sanity.

If you can't afford the luxury of a new model though just wait for the next update and when I'm in the same situation itching to upgrade you can make me jump on in.
