If you've got the money to spend upgrade! People like you will help pull the economy out of the recession. :)

No actually people like you should save your money and pay your mortgages/rent first before your house gets repossessed. Then you can help pull the economy out of recession. Don't accept 0% down on a house. You're part of the problem if you do.

All this stuff I've read about Steve Jobs in the last few weeks has made me realize that I can't take it with me when I die, and as rich as Steve is, he can't take it with him either. Might as well enjoy it while I still can.
I understand and respect your position.

However in my world there's no satisfaction of significance in material things.

I've chosen to build wealth.

First it makes life comfortable and second it brings me great joy to give it away to those who are less fortunate.

But that's just my take on it.

Cheers :)

Wow. That is a bit harsh. Who is this directed towards.

I'd wait bro. I'm rocking a 15 MBP Penryn 2.6 maxed and it's doing me justice. My machine is 3 years old and is in very good physical condition (needed a logic board replacement, stupid Nvidia 8600GT). It still does well in FC Express, video conversions, and basic gaming when I'm bored. While this update is nice and I would like to update, I'd recommend, especially for you, to wait at least till Ivy Bridge. Personally, I'm waiting for Haswell at late 2012, possibly 2013. The addition of Fused Multiply Accumulate (FMA) should be a great addition to the platform, especially for the video professional such as myself. Also, we should see a case revision and maturity of Thunderbolt by then. As well, 8 native cores would be incredibly sick. I know I'm updating by Haswell, but if you feel you NEED this update, go for it so long as you could afford it. I say you don't with the machine you have and would definitely wait in your place. Your Mac though should last 3 years or at best 5-6 years as Macs of yore. It has always been more about the total experience with the synergy of hardware and software; My sister's hand me down MBP 2.0 is still doing fine with SL. I guess though, the update cycle is ever more aggressive since the transition from PPC to Intel as I went from a TiBook 1Ghz -> Pbook 1.67 -> MBP Core Duo 2.0 -> MBP 15 Santa Rosa 2.4 -> MBP 15 Penryn 2.6 maxed. I was reckless in the past but could afford it. I also could wait back then when Apple made it wise to upgrade to the latest and greatest (especially with the horrendously slow PPC upgrade cycle). I also felt the need to have the best but with the new aggressive update cycle (more like normal upgrade cycle), it's not financially sound to do so. Now, things are tighter and I'm being smarter with my finances again while also establishing personal goals and targets. I'd recommend you do the same and wait.

I'm setting my sights on a maxed out 17'' Haswell as my desktop replacement/15'' replacement with an SB MBA I plan to purchase this year as my mobile laptop. I have realized even a 15'' is burdensome to carry and don't need the horsepower on the go/at school/at work when I do most of my edits and primary work at home anyway. However, if my board craps out again before that timetable and Apple doesn't cover my repair (I got lucky and they seriously forgot to charge me for the repair as my MBP wasn't bootable thus not able to verified by that stupid test for free coverage), I will buy a new machine in a heartbeat.

I am doing it for the economy! :)

I wasn't going to upgrade at first.

Since i have a 2010 17 " I7 2.66, but here is how I justified it.

The wife has a 15" 2009-15" 2.8 Duo.

She is taking my I7.

We have 2 people in our lives that cant afford a decent computer, and we are going to either give one of them the 15" or maybe sell the 15" and buy 2 laptops (prob windows based) and give them each a new computer.

So anyway getting a new 17" today, not complete made up my mind on specs yet.

Typing from my new 17" - I7 -2.3
Went with the matte screen again.
Installed 8 gb of ram myself and put in my 7200 RPM Seagate from my other laptop.

Update

Okay,

Well here is my update. Take it for what it is. I decided to offer (at no charge) my 2010 Macbook Pro to a family member who is without the means to buy a computer and has never had the pleasure of owning a piece of Apple tech. So +1 has been added to the Apple clan.

I purchased yesterday the 2011 MBP 15' 2.2. And I must say this unit is a beast. Enjoying the setup to the fullest.

So the best of both worlds. Gave a little and got a lot in return.

Happy days.

Congrats on your purchase! That's the model I have ordered.

Congrats to you as well. I have been using mac's for a long time and I have never seen a speed increase from one model year to another like this one. Don't get me wrong the '10 are great great great machines but this jump seems to almost be two jumps in one. Hopefully your machine arrives prior to the weekend so you can put it through its paces without work getting in the way ;)

Real funny!! China needs you for sure. What we need is for all Apple products to be mfg and made in the good ol USA.

Completely agree, they'd probably sell 10s of them at the price they'd have to charge for it.

Who's economy? Certainly not America. Apple Products are made in China.

Moving up the supply chain is a good thing, where do you think the large profits are made, in manufacturing, or in selling a finished product? and where do you think most of the profits will be invested in the development of new products and services?

Thank goodness the MBP is not a massive black penis!

wtf is this supposed to mean? Why should the colour of the penis have anything to do with it? Would it be OK if it was a white penis?

Comments like this make me fear for humanity. Think before you speak.

You are taking this way too seriously, so serious that you failed to realize it was an acronym. I found it quite funny.

I did understand the acronym. Still not funny and still offensive. Tell me, Would you be willing to crack that 'joke' in a room full of black people? Thought not. Why is it ok to say **** like that on a forum?

no, then the acronym wouldn't work. as off color as his humor was, it wasn't as dark as you're making it out to be
