Haha, I touched a nerve or something? :)
Nope. I asked two of my winter neighbors, both Toronto residents and both indicated Toronto is the exact same.

It is more likely I touched a nerve of yours.

the whole thing sounds so sketchy.

obviously this guy was up to no good himself.

IMO there should be a dollar limit to how much someone can spend between 10 PM and 6 am at these 24 hr apple stores.

if you are spending USD 500,000 USD 350,000 on iPhones at 2 am, your intentions are suspect.

BS, haven’t you heard “the citi never sleeps”? Are you saying if you spend $500k at 2am your intentions are suspect, but if you spend $500K at 9am, they aren’t? That’s silly.
I am saying exactly that yes. you should conduct business during normal business hours if you have nothing to hide.

You do know that credit card monitoring is 24x7? And in my opinion your thoughts are silly since the Apple Store is open 24 hours. That means the Apple Store is conducting business 24x7.
you do no know that most people who scam car dealerships will do so on a Saturday right? why you ask? bc the proper credit check doesn't happen until the following Monday at the earliest. by then nearly 2 days have passed. oops.

this guy knew what he was doing. unfortunately for him, someone else knew what he was doing too :p

Credit card fraud detection is 24X7, can’t spin it any other way. Buying a car with financing is not the same as whipping out a credit card.

They guy knew what he was doing, doesn’t mean it wasn’t legit. These crime opportunists have to be taken down by the police.

Wouldn't that be over 100 pounds of iPhones. What would be the size of the bag holding 100 iPhones? I have troubles trying to carry a 50 pound bag of dog food because of the overall size of the bag not the weight. Maybe new burner phones for his/her best sales people?

It's not sketchy and there is nothing to indicate this guy "was up to no good."

Obviously, if you been in NYC or any other 24/7 large city it has only been as a tourist. Can you tell me what your geographic frame of reference is. It would help me understand your comment.

The fact that you delineated the money with a American dollar prefix might lead someone to believe you are not in America and are basing your comment on a different culture and business /social setting.

Wondering if you think no restaurant should be allowed to serve breakfast food before 6:00 am or after 11:00 am.

I find it very strange that you are persisting in this line of attack. I really think all it is accomplishing is telling knowledgeable people that you are very unfamiliar with big cities, especially the city that never sleeps.

The Apple Store would not be open at that time if it were not reasonably normal for business to be transacted at that time and they have their own policies regarding how many of an item can be sold to a purchaser. I have to assume they know more than we do.

Scam car dealership on a Saturday night? Proper credit check can't be done until the following Monday? A full credit check can be done in minutes 24/7/365. I know that for a fact. I've done them on Christmas Eve and on Saturdays at 11:00 pm. Additionally, no legit dealer is delivering cars and processing sales for delivery on a Saturday night after 6:00 pm unless it is prearranged and in that case the paperwork has already been processed. Maybe some fly-by-night, BHPH operation which is a grifting operation is, but that is about it.

The assumption of criminal or fraud activity in the phone purchase is unwarranted and not supported by anything other stereo typing.

Where was Apple security at? He didn't even bother asking for an escort to his car.

Sounds like an inside job. Must be carrying a lot of Apple store bags.

Update: How are you able to purchase 300 iPhones instantly? Apple only allows you to buy from 1-10 iPhones at a time.

It wasn't a lot of bags, the second line of the article says it was three.

Apple security's job is protecting the store and the workers and customers INSIDE the store. It is not to provide escort service to your car.

If you can afford those many iPhones, either hire security when you get them or just have them shipped. I am glad the customer isn't seriously injured at least.

Word to the wise, NEVER fight off someone trying to rob you. He is lucky he escaped relatively unharmed. Just give them what they want.
Obviously, you don't live in Texas or Florida where the odds are pretty good someone will shoot the thief before they can make an exit.

Certainly makes you question Apple's logic here in allowing a business owner to purchase 300 iphone's to resell. Surely Apple would want to deal with the end user and not some middle man.

Damn! Who **** in your Cheerios? The businessman bought iPhone 13s, so there is no far off delivery date. I hope you never get robbed and assaulted and then have others cheer it on.
If I do get robbed it wouldn’t be while carrying 300 iPhones between 1 and 2am in NYC.

Why? When you buy anything does the business ever ask you if you are going to resell it? If this person has a tax exempt license, that would say something.( which we don’t know)

If a car dealership is open on a Saturday, then they would be conducting business “during normal business hours.”

I actually live less than 10 minute walk from the 5th avenue location. in fact, I can see the old FAO Schwartz building from my apartment. (the apple store itself is too low to the ground and blocked from my view.)

In any case, I prefer to shop at the W 67th street location b/c it is generally "quieter" and is less likely to sell out of certain items than the 5th avenue location. it is also technically a block or 2 closer to my home than the 5th avenue store.

as far as credit checks, ask anyone who works for a credit reporting agency. the "after hours" credit check is minimal.

I think it sounds sketchy at best.
Ask yourself, how you would go about purchasing 300 iphones.
Curious if one option would have been in the manner depicted in this story.
