I understand this makes no difference concerning privacy but most of my international contacts have moved from WhatsApp to Facebook messenger.

won't be shocked if we see WhatsApp/Facebook not appear on the App Store the way things are going

So I must be honest, I've not read much about this. Given FB owns the encrypting end, it is unreasonable that they encrypt one payload for the recipient where it is decrypted, and a second payload for FB data mining where it is also decrypted? Could they perform analysis of the message *before* it is encrypted?

End to end encryption simply states that it is encrypted on your device and decrypted on the recipient's device, I don't believe it precludes either scenario above.

If they MADE the encryption, they have the capability of BREAKING the encryption, regardless of anyone's feelings. I mean, they coded the stupid thing, so they need to kind of know how it works...

So 10k is unlimited? I am not arguing that the US system costs less, but we have had unlimited talk and text for many years, meaning unlimited, not high limit. 10k sounds a lot, but for heavy texters, people involved in groups and such, that’s fewer than 1 text (in or out) per 2 minutes in a 12 hour day. Factor in spamming, and it adds up fast.
Who the hell sends and receives a text every 2 minutes of their ENTIRE life? You have a SERIOUS problem if you do. The 10k limit is to help stop spammers. (Receiving texts and calls does not cost users anything in the rest of the civilised world).

Good on you for being one of the exceptions.
I’ll be deleting my account too. Annoying as I’m in several groups with friends overseas.
I just can’t stand these companies with no regard for privacy. It’s so far from what WhatsApp started as and the reason I became a user on day one.
Shame I have friends who still use Android. 😜

I often wonder "are they that desperate to collect my information, am I worth that much for them?"
All they care for is to collect as much information about you and possible.
The problem is: What will do with it whoever buys your information?
It could be a bank, online store, your neighborhood burglar, a criminal organization, etc..
You could even be profiled by your blood type for Organ trafficking.

So to answer your question: Yes, you are worth a lot to them!

WhatsApp and FBM uses the Signal Protocol made by Moxie Marlinspike & Co.

Glad to see another member having a 'come to Jesus app moment.' :D

As to your friends, you may need to do a Apple intervention. Hopefully, their current Android souls will get on the straight and narrow path to the Apple orchard.

Who knew changing the rugs to transparent would reveal so much dirt /s

I am in the process of disconnecting everything from FB, so I can delete it. If any of my friends/family wanna talk to me they can send a text or join me on discord.

What happens when someone continues to use WhatsApp but such person don't have an account in Facebook?
Said person will still be tracked by Facebook. Facebook still tries to track people who don't have accounts. They scrape as much data as they can from people. I highly suggest people use adblockers that also block tracking and all the there nuisances that are centered around social media (read: Malware in my personal viewpoint).

OK, I wrote to two of my friends I have been messaging on WhatsApp that I will delete this app and ask them to install Signal or Telegram.

I don't have any social media accounts outside of this forum. The way I see it...if someone claims to want to speak with but won't put forth any real effort, then said person is just blowing smoke my way. I am not about joining social media clicks so lazy people can add me to their friend click and spam me a bunch of mindless drivel I don't care about.

Good no you for drawing a line in the sand. Your privacy should come first.

I mostly stopped using WhatsApp last year. Moved everything I could to Signal.

Deleted the Facebook app a couple of years ago. Time to delete WhatsApp and Facebook messenger. If people really want to contact me they can still find me.

Thank you, Facebook, for compelling me to take this last step.

WhatsApp will be flooded with ads very very soon... 💩
I agree.

I knew the WhatsApp privacy and security stance was just a smoke screen. And so many here fell for it, even defending the empty privacy rhetoric. Facebook and the rest of the social media apps look to get people hooked on their platform before tightening the noose around their social media necks. I think most people are too lazy to read the terms. They just blindly tap on accept without a care in the world.

Glad you mentioned Messenger. In my opinion, people need to stop using that data mining monster immediately, in addition to WhatsApp, and Facebook etc.

almost all my relatives in Europe have WhatsApp and have asked me to join, which I refused for several years ... this just is the final nail until FB gets broken up ... I am not a fan of politics getting involved in business, but it's time to put the brakes on with regards to individual's privacy. We need education first to the masses while governments can plan out their actions ...
