meh i will stick to cash for offline purchases and visa for online shopping like a true german :D everything else is too complicated

(not that i have a choice lol)

This is not going just to happen immediately. I do not expect companies to just all of a sudden upgrade their Point of Sale Systems. It is just how it is right now and what we talked about before: At this time in the US, NFC just is not popular, except in a select few places.

It will happen in October 2015, because at that time any retailers that continue to use swipe-and-sign terminals will have to eat credit card fraud charges: October 2015: The End of the Swipe-and-Sign Credit Card - Corporate Intelligence - WSJ

Why would this be anything surprising? Google and NFC has been available long before apple was in on it. This applepay noise isn't going to motivate the push for more acceptanc . You guys act if apple is some holy grail of mobile payments just because they decided they want in on NFC payments.

Get In line those 200,000 terminals are using Isis and other NFC payments long before apple is. In fact most of those 200k terminals don't even work!

Example is at rite-aid, Walgreens, bestbuy which doesn't even work at all even when tried by employees.

Maybe in 2017 we will see more acceptance widespread but for sure nothing will change. Apple pay isn't some awesome free or beneficial incentive for retailers at the moment. Those 200k locations consists of mostly coke vending machines too lol

Speaking from experience of working in the retail marketing space, the single biggest reason why it'll be quite a long time before NFC/Apple Pay is ubiquitous, is because of cost. People seem to think it's as easy as flipping a switch to support a new payment format. It's not. It requires an upending of the point-of-sale infrastructure. Not that they shouldn't invest in the future, but it's an EXTREMELY expensive endeavor. It's tough enough for some retailers to even change the way their receipts print out. Changing the kinds of technologies they accept for payment...

We've got a long road ahead of us.

It's expensive, but every retailer will have to upgrade their POS hardware before Oct of next year anyway to ensure they are in compliance with chip card standards. So it's not a really long road.

Not upgrading opens retailers up to a lot of liability.

These retailers will not have option. NFC is coming and they will have to adopt whether they like it or not.

So Apple Pay is simply an NFC payment, so any NFC capable merchant can take Apple Pay? Or they still have to opt in?

I'm wondering if these merchants are simply saying "we're not going to accept NFC payments" or "we're specifically avoiding Apple Pay"

Why wouldn't they?

Because they know Apple's track record with early adopters. They want to let others work out the bugs in the system before they join in. This is the reason I won't upgrade to iOS 8 until at least Yosemite 10.10.1 has been released, at which time I may upgrade to both.

american express has been around forever and isnt accepted everywhere. what makes apple think it can come in and do an exponentially better job?

If no one ever tried anything that hadn't been done before, nothing would ever change!

Although no official statement has been given, additional merchants not planning to offer Apple Pay include the corner store just down the street, the laundromat, and the hot dog stand on the corner of 5th and Main.

It's important to note that even if a retailer does not explicitly state that it offers support for Apple Pay, the Apple Pay payments system will work in any retail store that allows contactless payments via NFC. Many modern point-of-sale (PoS) systems come with NFC capabilities, and Apple is counting on regulatory changes that will require merchants to update their payment hardware over the course of the next year.

As of October 2015, merchants that do not offer support for EMV credit cards (cards that contain integrated circuits to prevent fraud) will assume responsibility for any fraudulent transactions that take place. Normally, banks assume liability, so it is in the best interest of retailers to deploy these new payment processing systems. EMV cards, or chip cards, are already used in many other countries around the world.

Though many merchants will be upgrading to new payment systems, many of which offer NFC, these upgrades take time and it may be several months before retailers decide whether or not to adopt NFC to allow them to process payments through Apple Pay.

I wonder if many merchants don't want to have a payment system called Apple Pay.

Maybe they do not want to be seen as being involved with Apple with what most people. even techs and banking people I know, think is a proprietary system even though it is not. I can see them as not wanting to offend customers who have the other phones. One day Google and Microsoft will add the same technology to their phones and stores will add it for the 2015 rules change and that will be how things are done. But not everyone wants it to be called Apple Pay.

Lol spoken loike true apple fanism NFC payments were here years ago. All those 200k locations are set up for NFC and or google payments which now includes softcard/Isis.

Wow the ignorance of apple consumers is baffling.

Coach will come aboard as will H&M, as many of their customers are coincidently iphone users, and they do have better choices in terms of shopping locations.. Best Buy is on its way out...and it is odd that they would not support Apple Pay, but I have yet to find a best buy even close to crowded even during holiday season(in RTP/Chapel Hill NC, which btw has a upper middle class-superwealthy population) so if i were them i would be worried....chipotle will eventually come aboard, and so long as apple continues to follow regulatory and technology norms regarding payment system optimization, one should expect widespread acceptance...

stores just dont like committing publicly, but when stores start going out of business because they are liable for fraudulent charges, that will start changing minds...

LOLWUT?

AmEx has the highest retailer fees, bar none, so there are all kinds of places that won't take it.

They can certainly choose not to adopt it at this point. They may need to accept chip cards, but these contactless NFC payments are not required by the new regulations.

Could it be that these companies were asked if the support "Apple Pay" and didn't realise that the question is just whether they support NFC payments?
